O’Reilly transfer ‘not done deal’
The father of Pope grad and now former Auburn guard Thomas O’Reilly said Tuesday that a transfer to Georgia Tech is “not a done deal yet. We think it’s an option, but it’s not a done deal at this point.” Shaun O’Reilly said that there has been conversation between his son and Tech since he decided to transfer, but asserted that no decision had been made.
“We’ve talked,” he said. “We know the school very well from when he was recruited as a [high-school prospect]. It’s a great school and it has a ton to offer.”
During his high school recruitment, Tech was the first school to offer O’Reilly, listed in his Auburn bio at 6-foot-3, 325 pounds, and he made multiple visits to the school during his recruitment.
O’Reilly redshirted this past season and, assuming he transfers to another FBS-level school, will have to sit out another year and would have three years of eligibility. A highly-regarded high school prospect, ESPN ranked him the No. 145 player nationally in the class of 2011 and Rivals named him the No. 19 offensive guard.
Shaun O’Reilly said the decision to transfer was based on opportunities to play and the Tigers’ scheme change, as well as academics. Coach Gene Chizik hired Scot Loeffler to replace Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator in January after Malzahn left to become head coach at Arkansas State.

In case you missed it earlier, I wanted to share the official “WnE Manifesto” (he proofread it and offered suggestions) on his demands to finally give Coach Paul Johnson any form of positive credit. He feels these are achievable and within reason…
1) Go 12-0 in the regular season. But not your run-of-the-mill 12-0. It has to be an undefeated record against the best teams in those schools’ recent histories or else the victories don’t really count.
2) Consistently pull in Top 10 recruiting classes. Let’s ignore admission standards, disproportionate recruiting budgets, oversigning and attrition, Quantity-based recruiting rankings, how well coaches develop the recruits they get, available majors, inadmissable JuCo transfer credits, or the entire ambiguity and guessing game that is ranking HS football players. Those are nothing but excuses.
3) Have every eligible player drafted by the NFL. After all, if we’re going to hold it against CPJ that Kevin Cone and Tyler Melton don’t get drafted…then clearly the expectation is for all of his players to make it to the NFL.
4) Graduate 100% of his players with competitive degrees (Engineering preferred). Pay no attention to the fact that the regular student body fails out or transfers at a rate of 20%-30%. The fact most Football players follow a Business course of study, which is unacceptable…despite that the College of Management is ranked top 30…and is a Bachelor of Science degree which requires two advanced level math and science semesters. Perhaps GT needs to incorporate major programs (specifically for the benefit of attracting CFB mind you) even though it strays from the Institute’s core competiencies and increases overhead (at taxpayers’ expense) without the demand to generate the revenue to justify it.
5) No GT player must ever have any run-ins with the Police, fellow students or SAs, or campus administration. GT football players are expected to outperform the entire 18-22 year old age group by setting perfect examples of law-abiding citizenship. Any comparisons to CFB programs who grossly exceed societal norms for improper behavior are not acceptable without significant periods of perfect behavior.
