Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill slipped out of the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night. Many draft projections pegged Hill, who left Tech after his junior season, to go to San Francisco at the No. 30 spot. The 49ers did take a wide receiver, but it was Illinois’ A.J. Jenkins, projected as an early second-round choice. Overall, four wide receivers were taken in the first round – Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon to Jacksonville at No. 5, Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd to St. Louis Arizona at No. 13, Baylor’s Kendall Wright to Tennessee at No. 20 and Jenkins.
Hill, invited to New York for the draft, will likely go early in the second round, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday. The first 10 picks of the second round – St. Louis, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Denver, Cleveland, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Carolina, Buffalo and Miami. Hill visited with the Ravens prior to the draft. (He also reportedly visited with the New York Jets, Philadelphia, Tennessee and Minnesota.) With the exception of Jacksonville, which took Blackmon in the first round, the other nine teams have a need at wide receiver to one degree or another and could select Hill. Another team could also trade up to take Hill.
A few intriguing landing spots are Indianapolis, where Hill could pair with first overall pick Andrew Luck; Denver, where he could line up opposite former Jackets star Demaryius Thomas and catch passes from Peyton Manning; Carolina, where he could become the go-to guy of Cam Newton, another Atlanta product; and Buffalo, where he would be coached by former Tech coach Chan Gailey and be a teammate of his former quarterback, Bills safety Joshua Nesbitt.
An interesting post script to the Jenkins pick. My thanks to a Twitter follower who noted that Gailey recruited Jenkins out of Jacksonville, Fla., and received a commitment from him in the summer of 2007, but he de-committed in the fall. (confirmed on Jenkins” Rivals page) Interesting to think what might have happened if he’d kept his commitment and then maintained it after the coaching change. The other great part about Jenkins’ page? He was the No. 53 wide receiver in the country that year. (Floyd was No. 6 and Blackmon was No. 91. Wright was the No. 64 “athlete.” Julio Jones and A.J. Green were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. In 2009, Hill was No. 99.)

I think Mr. Hill would rather have gotten drafted earlier putting himself in position to make millions more in signing bonus money rather than partying it up on the NFLs dime for one more night.

I think Hill dropping a bunch of wide open passes is the reason he didn’t go in the 1st round. If you want to blame that on CPJ then go ahead. Hopefully he goes high in the second round.

I agree GTBob. The analogous joke in the Tarheel state was who was the only person to hold Michael Jordan below 20 ppg in B-ball? Answer: Dean Smith, coach of UNC. Jordan credits Smith for teaching him to play D and be a complete player. DT and SH are complete players thanks to their developed blocking skills at GT. I think it’d be great for GT football and I hope we get a QB (hopefully Lee) that can exploit such WR talent in the future.

The dropped passed when he was wide open heading to the house against UNC last year is the one that stands out. He gets nervous and gets the drops. I was always surprised his speed was so good. It seemed to take him forever to come around the end on those end around reverses. Maybe he is so tall he can’t cut well and has to round off deep into the backfield, but he just never looked like a speed demon. That said I remember Thomas dropping a wide open pass against Georgia in Atlanta, stopping a last minute drive. But with Thomas you kind of knew you had a monster brewing, this Hill thing was totally out of left field.

Financially speaking—what’s the difference between a mid 1st round and a mid-second round draft pick in terms of salary and bonuses and is that difference worth staying a poor college student another year?
I disagree atlxman, Tech does have a feature receiver in their run-oriented offense and Hill would have been that this year. If he actually caught all the catchable balls thrown to him, he’d have about 40 catches for his senior year and since many are long passes, his stats would have presented him well.

I don’t care if Hill goes in the 12 round, He’s a good guy and a Tech guy so I will pull for his success.
By the way, you have to give credit to Hill HS’s coach, Hill is a WR that is willing to do whatever it takes to win, sure he would like ball more, but handled his roll of blocking and be decoy for runs well and that attitude had to begin with his HS coaching

If you’re an Offensive Genius like the GT fanbase claims that CPJ is, then you find a way to get MORE out of a guy that has Randy Moss-type physical talents.
26 catches in 12 reg season games is laughable.
6-4 215lbs. that runs a 4.36 forty and has a vertical of 40 inches.
He’s got Julio Jones/AJ Green type measurables, but since he played in CPJ’s crappy Offense, he gets drafted much later than those 32 guys did (4th & 6th overall).
When Nick Saban & CMR had AJ & Julio they “didn’t blow it” (both were Top-7 Draft picks) , CPJ had S. Hill and he falls out of the first round, the clear trend is obvious.
CPJ the guy that gets credit of doing more with less, had MORE in this isolated situation and failed greatly.
The FOUR WRs taken ahead of Hill so far are not only SMALLER than Hill but are also SLOWER than Hill!
Imagine that, in a league where measurables are so important, NFL GMs saw the gimmicky offense that Hill played in at GT, and decided to draft SMALLER. SLOWER WRs than Hill.
That right there is chilling indictment as to what NFL GMs think about CPJ’s gimmicky Offense!
You did everything you could Mr, Hill, it is not your fault, the fault lies with the HC that you signed with coming out of HS.

But it’s par for the course for your hatred of CPJ, because in your eyes he has to…
1) Go 12-0 against top-flight competition…and those teams need to be the most successful in their recent histories or else the Wins are weak
2) Have all of his players go in the top half of the 1st round of the NFL Draft
3) Pull in top 5 recruiting classes every year despite the tangible academic restrictions placed upon CPJ

Let me see if I can parse WnE’s opinion.
If a player gets taken highly in the draft, Johnson underused him. However, if he falls in the draft, Johnson didn’t prepare him.
If a player gets taken highly in the draft, it was because of his time spent training with a third party. However, if the player falls in the draft, it’s because Johnson didn’t prepare him.
Paul Johnson damages the draft prospects of players. However, he also cannot recruit well enough to get them because of the offense he runs.

You missed my point.
You are generally critical of CPJ saying he can’t recruit talented players to Tech because of the offense he runs.
Today is seems like your saying S Hill is very talented player but CPJ did not properly use that talent.
I think at a minimum you have to admit CPJ has recruited some good players.
My view is
S Hill is very talented
CPJ did good job of recruiting him and getting him to GT
CJP could throw a little more, but overall I think his offense is very good so I don’t think it need to change much. Hill was used well, I think he was enough of a threat that defenses had to worry about him every play. I also think there was not a much confidence in TW’s passing to Hill last year as there was when JN throw to Thomas.
I still think Thomas was a little better overall, that’s why he was 1st round pick. At the same time Hill has been putting on some pounds, still has room to grow so he may catch up to Thomas in strength.

WnE, did you know that Stephen Hill actually had one of the slowest short shuttle times for a WR at the combine (in fact it was slower than most of the TEs)? The idea that WnE would even write a sentence with his name and the word “respectful” in it is ludicrous. I’m sure it s also “respectful” to make up stupid names for a football coach. atlxman,
Your statements are way too simplistic. I actually agree, if you are a top rated passing QB, GT is probably not a good fit. But then we weren’t getting that QB under ANY prior coaches either, so the point is kind of moot. If you are a top rated WR and expect to catch 100 balls a season, GT is probably not a good fit. But, if you are a top rated dual threat QB, you have to consider GT (and many have over the past couple years). If you are a big physical WR who perhaps doesn’t have blazing top end speed, GT may be a good fit because you are going to get a lot of one-on-one coverage to showcase your skills. If you are a big physical RB that doesn’t have blazing top end speed, GT might be the perfect place to showcase your talents and get lots of carries. If you are a smaller slot WR/RB with good running and receiving skills, GT is one of the few places where you can showcase both skills with the opportunity to run with the ball in the open field and catch the ball downfield. A-back is the one place where I think getting one game-changer could make all the difference in recruiting. I mean we might be sending a 2-star A-back recruit to the NFL next year in Orwin Smith.

atlxman,
I love the revisionist history on RBs. Jon Dwyer was projected to go as high as 2nd round at one point, then he came into a bunch of his NFL workouts overweight. But somehow that wasn’t his fault?!?!? Anthony Allen is a solid RB, but the position of RB at the NFL level has changed. Are you willing to tell me that you think Allen was talented enough to be the 6th or 7th best RB to come out last year (that’s 3rd round in last year’s draft). You think Allen was more talented than Roy Helu or Kendall Hunter (both 4th rounders)?

What ive learned on the blogs recently:
Every player that is on GT’s team would have been a first round draft pick if CPJ had not been the coach. At least by this silly logic you can’t argue that he isn’t recruiting well.
_______________
If Dwyer & A.Allen played in I-formation, pro-style formations, they would have been drafted no later than the 3rd round with their size & productivity in college.
If Kevin Cone at 6-2 210 and running a 4.37 with a 400m track background had played in a pro-style system, he probably would have been a 5th round draft choice rather than a Free agent having to make the Team via the Practice Squad.
Now we have Hill with Randy Moss measurables and only 26 catches in a 12 game season and folks are wondering WHY he falls out of the first round.
Well try this out:
Randy Moss measurables on a CRIMINAL like Moss with a BAD ATTITUDE will still get you drafted in the FIRST ROUND as long as you put up the STATS in college.
In Hill’s case Randy Moss measurables won’t get you drafted in the 1st round if you play in a gimmicky triple-OPtion offense, even if you are a saint off the field when you don’t put up the STATS thanks to playing in a gimmicky CPJ led offense.
All you schmucks are trying to claim AFTER the fact that Randy Moss measurables aren’t enough to get you drafted n the first round but they can get a criminal with a bad attitude like Moss drafted in the first round, the only difference being the SYSTEM you play in and the STATS you put up!
Hill played for the wrong HC, he might not ever say it in public, but those close to him know that he feels this way.

I think the 55 touchdowns he scored in two years had a little more to do with it. Randy Moss was one of the best players to ever come out of high school and then completely dominated in college. Stephen Hill was a decent receiver with issues dropping the ball. It’s pretty amazing that you can’t see the difference in the two.

Even with the big catch/TD run in the Playoffs, Bay-Bay has been slow to develop and has underachieved in his short NFL career.

That doesn’t exactly seem fair. CPJ was hired in December of 2007, he was able to pull a few recruits into the 2008 class, but I think we all agree that you aren’t going to be able to pull top notch recruits in that short a time period. Even still, the earliest those guys could be drafted was 2011 as draft eligible jrs. So 2009 was CPJ’s first full recruiting cycle, and so 2012 is the first opportunity to have draft eligible jrs. from that class. And low and behold, GT has a player about to be taken from that class in the 2nd round. That’s pretty good, I’d say.

I am not knocking the M-train at all and good for you on your early retirment. It used to be you could eat out every night in Vegas cheaper than buying groceries. I don’t think that is the case anymore, at least not with decent food.
WnE shared one time that he had to take Rocks for Jocks or Socks for Jocks as a GPA booster. So I was curious what his major was before he hopped on the M-train.

Hell, George, even the UGA fans in November thought they had the greatest defense in the country, when they never played anybody with any kind of an offense till they faced LSU. And that defense worked for maybe one half. After halftime, it was all over. And frankly, even though UGA was obviuosly the better team on the field T’giving weekend, that mighty defense didn’t really do that good against Tech. It was more case of Tech’s defense being worse.

Well, now xman, maybe you should stick to your prowess in predicting the future, because you obviously are out of touch with the past. Allen did not even play at Tech last year. He finished up in 2010. As far as how Tech performed offensively against the mutts, Tech did as well in the first half as UGA did against LSU in the first half. I guess the LSU first half is a moral victory for you; the first half against the mutts was not a moral victory for Tech. It gave us hope, but we weren’t able to follow through after half-time.

EVERYBODY was saying that Bama was too small and slow to stay on the field against the MIGHTY Trojans. Of course everybody was wrong to, because Bama beat the hell out of them. Size doesn’t mean squat. As far as athletic ability, I would bet that Tech has quite a few superior ATHLETES on the team. With the exception of last year (final score, at any rate), Tech hasn’t had the size or athletic ability (at least in your eyes) of UGA the past 4 years, but Tech one won and was within 3 points in two. I could make excuses as to why Tech didn’t win those two close ones, but I don’t want to sound like the typical excuse-making mutt fan.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The NCAA has ruled that South Carolina failed to monitor its athletic program that resulted in various rules violations and has accepted the school’s proposed sanctions to cut six football scholarships and slash its official recruiting visits by more than half in the coming year.
There were no forfeiture of games or bowl ban attached to the penalties, which stemmed from athletes receiving $59,000 in impermissible benefits. The NCAA said South Carolina’s cooperation went “beyond standard expectations.”

Ok, you’ve shown your complete lack of knowledge of football and the draft. Stephen Hill will without a doubt be the next WR taken. Its not even a question.
Someone thinks they know too much.

Does this really surprise you? Never liked the kid from the start and it just confirmed it when he made the decision to chase the money rather than stay his last year to build upon his little talent and improve his education. I am glad he slipped. Keep slipping to undrafted for all I care.

Funny as heck…all that talent and one guy in the top 40!!!! Where is all the UGA bloggers telling us the greatness of that football powerhouse? Nick Saban kicking your azz again …Live from New York it’s the Nick Saban show…5 of the 40 from Alabama and nobody on the AJC UGA blogs want to talk about the draft!!!! Nick going to take all Sunny Man’s recruits this year. Your’ pitiful…get out from under you desk!

Ok, so I was wrong about Stephen Hill being the first WR taken in the 2nd round. I’ll own up to it. St. Louis apparently thought Quick would be a better talent than S. Hill. Very few others thought that.

wet willie…give it a few more years..uga will have that many or close to it next year. UGA sends its fair share to the pros since richt has been coaching.
