Tech’s Hill slips out of first round

Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill slipped out of the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night. Many draft projections pegged Hill, who left Tech after his junior season, to go to San Francisco at the No. 30 spot. The 49ers did take a wide receiver, but it was Illinois’ A.J. Jenkins, projected as an early second-round choice. Overall, four wide receivers were taken in the first round – Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon to Jacksonville at No. 5, Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd to St. Louis Arizona at No. 13, Baylor’s Kendall Wright to Tennessee at No. 20 and Jenkins.

Hill, invited to New York for the draft, will likely go early in the second round, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday. The first 10 picks of the second round – St. Louis, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Denver, Cleveland, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Carolina, Buffalo and Miami. Hill visited with the Ravens prior to the draft. (He also reportedly visited with the New York Jets, Philadelphia, Tennessee and Minnesota.) With the exception of Jacksonville, which took Blackmon in the first round, the other nine teams have a need at wide receiver to one degree or another and could select Hill. Another team could also trade up to take Hill.

A few intriguing landing spots are Indianapolis, where Hill could pair with first overall pick Andrew Luck; Denver, where he could line up opposite former Jackets star Demaryius Thomas and catch passes from Peyton Manning; Carolina, where he could become the go-to guy of Cam Newton, another Atlanta product; and Buffalo, where he would be coached by former Tech coach Chan Gailey and be a teammate of his former quarterback, Bills safety Joshua Nesbitt.

An interesting post script to the Jenkins pick. My thanks to a Twitter follower who noted that Gailey recruited Jenkins out of Jacksonville, Fla., and received a commitment from him in the summer of 2007, but he de-committed in the fall. (confirmed on Jenkins” Rivals page) Interesting to think what might have happened if he’d kept his commitment and then maintained it after the coaching change. The other great part about Jenkins’ page? He was the No. 53 wide receiver in the country that year. (Floyd was No. 6 and Blackmon was No. 91. Wright was the No. 64 “athlete.” Julio Jones and A.J. Green were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. In 2009, Hill was No. 99.)

Hill was not first round material. Hill will have to learn the position of WR.

It’s a good thing Tech doesn’t play tough teams like Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, or Georgia Southern.

Well, now xman, maybe you should stick to your prowess in predicting the future, because you obviously are out of touch with the past. Allen did not even play at Tech last year. He finished up in 2010. As far as how Tech performed offensively against the mutts, Tech did as well in the first half as UGA did against LSU in the first half. I guess the LSU first half is a moral victory for you; the first half against the mutts was not a moral victory for Tech. It gave us hope, but we weren’t able to follow through after half-time.

doesnt matter who starts? they are all worse than the opposing qb…just like at running back and wide receiver..they are all lacking in size and athletic abilty. i watch them play and they are just too little….

I expected Stephen to be 2nd round all along. He missed the 1st round predictions of a few mis-guided anaylst, so what. He’s going to make some team a very good WR for many years.

@ atlxman……perhaps you don’t remember a certain Bama – USC (west) game back in the late 60s or early 70s. EVERYBODY was saying that Bama was too small and slow to stay on the field against the MIGHTY Trojans. Of course everybody was wrong to, because Bama beat the hell out of them. Size doesn’t mean squat. As far as athletic ability, I would bet that Tech has quite a few superior ATHLETES on the team. With the exception of last year (final score, at any rate), Tech hasn’t had the size or athletic ability (at least in your eyes) of UGA the past 4 years, but Tech one won and was within 3 points in two. I could make excuses as to why Tech didn’t win those two close ones, but I don’t want to sound like the typical excuse-making mutt fan.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — The NCAA has ruled that South Carolina failed to monitor its athletic program that resulted in various rules violations and has accepted the school’s proposed sanctions to cut six football scholarships and slash its official recruiting visits by more than half in the coming year.

There were no forfeiture of games or bowl ban attached to the penalties, which stemmed from athletes receiving $59,000 in impermissible benefits. The NCAA said South Carolina’s cooperation went “beyond standard expectations.”

so if a high school team operates a “pro style” offense……does said offense become a “high school offense”?

What a bunch of losers in this blog. These Tech articles attract d-bags like moths to a flame. Most of you Techies sound like a bunch of middle school girls by using phrases like “LOL”, “BTW”, and “TMI” and making references to Lord of the Rings. No wonder everyone in the “real world” has such a low opinion of Tech fans and no one with any form of social life wants to attend the North Ave Trade School. Have a great weekend banging away on your keyboard losers

Not only Hill but the entire ACC “slipped” out of the first round. Only North Carolina (#16) had a pick.
I never put much emphasis on high school ratings but the NFL selection process is much more accurate for a variety of reasons. The ACC looks bad today.
