Tech’s Hill slips out of first round

Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill slipped out of the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night. Many draft projections pegged Hill, who left Tech after his junior season, to go to San Francisco at the No. 30 spot. The 49ers did take a wide receiver, but it was Illinois’ A.J. Jenkins, projected as an early second-round choice. Overall, four wide receivers were taken in the first round – Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon to Jacksonville at No. 5, Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd to St. Louis Arizona at No. 13, Baylor’s Kendall Wright to Tennessee at No. 20 and Jenkins.

Hill, invited to New York for the draft, will likely go early in the second round, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday. The first 10 picks of the second round – St. Louis, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Denver, Cleveland, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Carolina, Buffalo and Miami. Hill visited with the Ravens prior to the draft. (He also reportedly visited with the New York Jets, Philadelphia, Tennessee and Minnesota.) With the exception of Jacksonville, which took Blackmon in the first round, the other nine teams have a need at wide receiver to one degree or another and could select Hill. Another team could also trade up to take Hill.

A few intriguing landing spots are Indianapolis, where Hill could pair with first overall pick Andrew Luck; Denver, where he could line up opposite former Jackets star Demaryius Thomas and catch passes from Peyton Manning; Carolina, where he could become the go-to guy of Cam Newton, another Atlanta product; and Buffalo, where he would be coached by former Tech coach Chan Gailey and be a teammate of his former quarterback, Bills safety Joshua Nesbitt.

An interesting post script to the Jenkins pick. My thanks to a Twitter follower who noted that Gailey recruited Jenkins out of Jacksonville, Fla., and received a commitment from him in the summer of 2007, but he de-committed in the fall. (confirmed on Jenkins” Rivals page) Interesting to think what might have happened if he’d kept his commitment and then maintained it after the coaching change. The other great part about Jenkins’ page? He was the No. 53 wide receiver in the country that year. (Floyd was No. 6 and Blackmon was No. 91. Wright was the No. 64 “athlete.” Julio Jones and A.J. Green were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. In 2009, Hill was No. 99.)

“Let me guess. As soon as one of those div1aa players gets drafted high, CPJ will be criticized for ruining their careers, am I correct?”

You’re starting to get there, GTBob.

atlxman & WnE,
I have already addressed your statements about RBs. Dwyer cost himself millions by showing up to NFL workouts out of shape and overweight. And if you believe Anthony Allen is a more talented RB than Kendall Hunter or Roy Helu (both 4th rounders last year), then you don’t know much about football.

“richt on the other hand is spitting them out left and right….uga had a first round LB stay to play his jr year in linebacker jarvis jones , this year. uga players have no shortage of drafted players and will not as long as coach richt is their.”

xman realizes that Jarvis Jones wasn’t recruited to uGA right? I mean, that would be only the 57th error he’s made in his posts since last night’s live Draft blog.

atlxman,
That doesn’t exactly seem fair. CPJ was hired in December of 2007, he was able to pull a few recruits into the 2008 class, but I think we all agree that you aren’t going to be able to pull top notch recruits in that short a time period. Even still, the earliest those guys could be drafted was 2011 as draft eligible jrs. So 2009 was CPJ’s first full recruiting cycle, and so 2012 is the first opportunity to have draft eligible jrs. from that class. And low and behold, GT has a player about to be taken from that class in the 2nd round. That’s pretty good, I’d say.

spurrier is not at fla so uga will have no problem beating usc this year..haha with connor shaw at the qb position they will be lucky to score 12 points…every team in the sec will be a quality win compared to that joke of a schedule you guys will play in the weak acc…the reason your schedule is more difficult is becasue your team filled of mostly div 1aa players and trying to beat the better teams in the acc will be a challenge of it own, much less beating the dogs this year..your team is weak and getting weaker by the moment…come up with every lame excuse about uga schedule,,,they cant help it they are better than every team they are scheduled to play.

do you not think UGA will be a preason top 10 team? south carolina will not be better than uga.,,they lost a ton on defense which is why they won last year..no more ingram or gilmore..

Connor Shaw is a better LEADER than Aaron Murray. Hell, USC beat the mutts with that screwball Garcia. As far as comparable schedules, Miami, Clemson, VT, and UNC are every bit as good as Florida, UT, Auburn, and Miss State. If the mutts were playing the big boys in the SEC, you would have a point; but the fact is the ONLY big SEC team the mutts will play this year is USC.

wNe, whinnie, wheenie knows Hill and his father think this way becuase he heard it from xmen.

Anyone who proclaims to have many “friends to steer away from GT that are NFL prospects” is either a) too young to have an opinion with any real consideration or b) out of high school, but hanging around high scool kids or c) a sexual predator hanging around with high school kids.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt anf just assume you are a kid, with very simplistic, tainted views. You are obviously a UGA fan and objectivity is no where in your vocabulary.

That being said, there are virtually NO high school kids that can be considered “NFL prospects”, truly naive comment.

As for wheenie, I’ll give him credit. If anyone is the master of “spin”, it’s him. I just try and ignore him, but he does help with the page count. The other thing I have noticed ios that the other, normally present, UGA fans have not made themselves as apparent.

I am not knocking the M-train at all and good for you on your early retirment. It used to be you could eat out every night in Vegas cheaper than buying groceries. I don’t think that is the case anymore, at least not with decent food.

WnE shared one time that he had to take Rocks for Jocks or Socks for Jocks as a GPA booster. So I was curious what his major was before he hopped on the M-train.

Supposedly, UVA and Stanford are better academically than Georgia Tech, according to WnE, but he must have had some challenges while at Tech.

Hell, George, even the UGA fans in November thought they had the greatest defense in the country, when they never played anybody with any kind of an offense till they faced LSU. And that defense worked for maybe one half. After halftime, it was all over. And frankly, even though UGA was obviuosly the better team on the field T’giving weekend, that mighty defense didn’t really do that good against Tech. It was more case of Tech’s defense being worse.

tech fans…your team is in trouble,,,,at what position will tech have the advantage when they play any other team in the acc or any other big school they play this year? i will give you a hint….0

your team will not have the best qb on the field ,,running back or wide receiver…both lines are worse than the other big schools too…even your corners will be the worse players on teh field and that is where best players on defense are….
