Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill slipped out of the first round of the NFL draft Thursday night. Many draft projections pegged Hill, who left Tech after his junior season, to go to San Francisco at the No. 30 spot. The 49ers did take a wide receiver, but it was Illinois’ A.J. Jenkins, projected as an early second-round choice. Overall, four wide receivers were taken in the first round – Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon to Jacksonville at No. 5, Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd to St. Louis Arizona at No. 13, Baylor’s Kendall Wright to Tennessee at No. 20 and Jenkins.
Hill, invited to New York for the draft, will likely go early in the second round, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday. The first 10 picks of the second round – St. Louis, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Denver, Cleveland, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Carolina, Buffalo and Miami. Hill visited with the Ravens prior to the draft. (He also reportedly visited with the New York Jets, Philadelphia, Tennessee and Minnesota.) With the exception of Jacksonville, which took Blackmon in the first round, the other nine teams have a need at wide receiver to one degree or another and could select Hill. Another team could also trade up to take Hill.
A few intriguing landing spots are Indianapolis, where Hill could pair with first overall pick Andrew Luck; Denver, where he could line up opposite former Jackets star Demaryius Thomas and catch passes from Peyton Manning; Carolina, where he could become the go-to guy of Cam Newton, another Atlanta product; and Buffalo, where he would be coached by former Tech coach Chan Gailey and be a teammate of his former quarterback, Bills safety Joshua Nesbitt.
An interesting post script to the Jenkins pick. My thanks to a Twitter follower who noted that Gailey recruited Jenkins out of Jacksonville, Fla., and received a commitment from him in the summer of 2007, but he de-committed in the fall. (confirmed on Jenkins” Rivals page) Interesting to think what might have happened if he’d kept his commitment and then maintained it after the coaching change. The other great part about Jenkins’ page? He was the No. 53 wide receiver in the country that year. (Floyd was No. 6 and Blackmon was No. 91. Wright was the No. 64 “athlete.” Julio Jones and A.J. Green were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. In 2009, Hill was No. 99.)

They will have two 1st or 2nd round draft picks in the past 3 years. Not bad for a dream crushing offense.

atlxman,
I love the revisionist history on RBs. Jon Dwyer was projected to go as high as 2nd round at one point, then he came into a bunch of his NFL workouts overweight. But somehow that wasn’t his fault?!?!? Anthony Allen is a solid RB, but the position of RB at the NFL level has changed. Are you willing to tell me that you think Allen was talented enough to be the 6th or 7th best RB to come out last year (that’s 3rd round in last year’s draft). You think Allen was more talented than Roy Helu or Kendall Hunter (both 4th rounders)?

Neil, your dawgs only have 2 more Ws in the same span. Of UGA’s 16 Ws, just how many of those were against “good” teams?
I’ve got your answer … ZERO. No, UF and Auburn weren’t good in 2011.
But I’ll spin it for you…. “My dawgs only had 2 more Ws than GT b/c we play in the SEC” … “if we played in the ACC we’d undefeated, and if GT played in the SEC they have 4-5 Ws at best”

No AJC title on “Cordy Glenn slips into Second Round” ? Shocking. GT beating Georgie in a baseball game was kinda buried, too. Oh, well.. It’s pretty clear that Georgie gets more high profile recruits than GT. How many dawgs were drafted in the first round? Add that to your analysis of what the coaches do with the talent they’re given…

Actually that makes 5 of the past 7 years that UGA hasn’t had a first rounder. In Richt’s first 4 years UGA had 6 first round draft picks. In the 7 years they have had 3. Richt really should send Donnan a nice Christmas present.

What ive learned on the blogs recently:
Every player that is on GT’s team would have been a first round draft pick if CPJ had not been the coach. At least by this silly logic you can’t argue that he isn’t recruiting well.
_______________
If Dwyer & A.Allen played in I-formation, pro-style formations, they would have been drafted no later than the 3rd round with their size & productivity in college.
If Kevin Cone at 6-2 210 and running a 4.37 with a 400m track background had played in a pro-style system, he probably would have been a 5th round draft choice rather than a Free agent having to make the Team via the Practice Squad.
Now we have Hill with Randy Moss measurables and only 26 catches in a 12 game season and folks are wondering WHY he falls out of the first round.
Well try this out:
Randy Moss measurables on a CRIMINAL like Moss with a BAD ATTITUDE will still get you drafted in the FIRST ROUND as long as you put up the STATS in college.
In Hill’s case Randy Moss measurables won’t get you drafted in the 1st round if you play in a gimmicky triple-OPtion offense, even if you are a saint off the field when you don’t put up the STATS thanks to playing in a gimmicky CPJ led offense.
All you schmucks are trying to claim AFTER the fact that Randy Moss measurables aren’t enough to get you drafted n the first round but they can get a criminal with a bad attitude like Moss drafted in the first round, the only difference being the SYSTEM you play in and the STATS you put up!
Hill played for the wrong HC, he might not ever say it in public, but those close to him know that he feels this way.

WnE obviously slept through the 2010 NFL Draft where BeyBey Thomas was the first WR taken…over a guy from a passing offense who had more collegiate hype (Dez Bryant)

I think the 55 touchdowns he scored in two years had a little more to do with it. Randy Moss was one of the best players to ever come out of high school and then completely dominated in college. Stephen Hill was a decent receiver with issues dropping the ball. It’s pretty amazing that you can’t see the difference in the two.

Dez Bryant sat out 10+ Games maybe the entire season the Yr. Bay-Bay was The 1st WR taken, had he just played half of the season he’d of gone ahead of Bay-Bay.
Even with the big catch/TD run in the Playoffs, Bay-Bay has been slow to develop and has underachieved in his short NFL career.
Compare Bay-Bay to 2 other big WRs that came out of Pro-Style Offenses to see the DAMAGE that CPJ does to WRs NFL careers; the 2 WRs Julio Jones & AJ Green.

@ atlxman …. UGA is about to win an SEC championship this year??? What the hell are you smoking. I want some of that; it must be good stuff. First of all, just like last year, they don’t play anybody, so yes, they might have a clear path to the SEC CG, unless SC can beat all the QUALITY teams that they play. We know SC will beat the mutts, because Spurier ALWAYS beats the mutts, but they might have problems with the REAL SEC teams they have to play. But after playing their usual pansy schedule, the mutts will NEVER win the SEC CG. Bank on it!!!
