Busy week for Roddy Jones

An interesting week for former Georgia Tech A-back Roddy Jones. Wednesday night, he was at the Fox Theatre as a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Thursday morning, he’ll be a guest host on 790 the Zone’s Barnhart & Durham show. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he plans to be in WREK’s broadcast booth for the Georgia Tech baseball team’s games at Russ Chandler Stadium. He’s also got his MBA classes. And then he’s hoping to get a phone call from one of 32 NFL teams telling him they want his services.

“I’m excited about what this weekend’s going to hold for me,” Jones said prior to Wednesday’s awards ceremony.

To answer the first question, Jones did not win the award, created to honor a sports professional and a student-athlete for their character, leadership on and off the field and contribution to sport and society. The winner was Aleca Hughes, a former Yale ice hockey player who started a foundation to honor a teammate who had died from leukemia.

“This is probably at the top,” Jones said, referring to the list of honors he has received. “It’s a national award named after Coach John Wooden, which is an honor in itself. Coach (Vince) Dooley being here (as chair of the selection committee) and all the different finalists from different places, it’s definitely an honor.”

Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt was also on hand to receive the professional Wooden Citizenship Cup. Coach Paul Johnson, A-backs coach Lamar Owens and team chaplain Derrick Moore joined Jones’ family in support of him.

As for the draft, Jones said he had received phone calls from a few teams to confirm his health and to make sure they had the right phone number for the draft weekend, a good sign.

“Even if they’re just calling to get my cell phone number, it means they want it,” he said.

Jones’ likely route to the NFL is as an undrafted free agent, a path many Tech players have taken to reach the league. That would most likely happen Saturday afternoon after the seven rounds of the draft conclude.

Way to go Roddy! I hope that the next player wearing #20 realizes the honor it is to have it.

And I can completely see Roddy develping into a good 3rd down back in the NFL…can block, can catch, is pretty quick.

Jones would be a great NFL running back. May not get a lot of yeards but the type of player that would do anything for the team, Plus he’s a good leader and all round good guy.

Congrats to Aleca Hughes, all the finalist were deserving.

You gotta luv them Jackets, 2012 is the year.

How can you not love Roddy? It’s been said a hundred times before, but he’ll be a success no matter what he does.

GS…how about the soccer games these past couple of days?

Also, I’m sure it’s going to be a treat watching Roddy Jones in an NFL camp step up and lay the wood into a blitzing LB while the drafted stud RB wets himself…

know someone, Roddy’s dad their attorney-loves him……..FLJ, you hit the PK win fuer die Roten auf der Kopf(can’t beleive they let Pique back in after such an obvious concussion), with Bayern my nummer eins side, & a Gooner 2nd, looking forward to 5/19…..anyone know where the FCB hang out for matches, or Gunner fans, or even(in desperation) the blues?

Could you believe that, FLJ!!! I couldn’t believe Bayern won. And don’t even start me on Chelsea beating Barca. To be down 2-0 and a man and withstand the relentless attack blew me away.

juve…(hope that’s not offensive)

Chelsea winning the aggregate with 10 men in Camp Nou…what are the freakin’ odds? What a MF idiot that John Terry is. What a great way to make a case for getting your MNT captaincy back…by pulling a stunt almost as dumb as Zizou!

GS…

Watching as much soccer on a weekly basis as I try…Ramires to me is Chelsea’s most skilled and versatile player. He never disappears from games the way a Frank Lampard or Juan Mata do.

Unsung hero for Chelsea in this past game was Didier Drogba…who proved he could be an elite defender if he wanted to by holding the line on the offense’s RH side and keeping Dani Alves from making diagonal runs. When they brought Torres in for Drogba, you could see them start to take advantage of Torres on defense.

I particularly liked the line — ” ‘The game is about putting players in a position to succeed,” said Johnson. “If you recruit good players and teach them consistently then you’ve got a chance to win.’ “

Since we can’t comment on the article it’s on…jeez Tyler Kidney what are you thinking? Didn’t you hear the Zach Piller story? Dem Frat dudes don’t like Football players because it cuts in on their Sorority girl action…

Strange that a former walk-on got in trouble. They are usually more disciplined than that.

The campus police report seems fishy to me. Tyler defaced something, was asked to leave, then shoved somebody? Why is he not in trouble for defacing private property?

Here’s what probably really happened. Frat guys ex-GF was talking to Kidney…Frat guy got mad and tried to kick Kidney out. Kidney refused…then was confronted by more than one Frat guy (because that’s usually how they operate). Tempers flared, Frat guy shoves Kidney, Kidney shoves back, and all hell breaks loose.

it’s not like it’s animal house……FLJ, the commercialism of world football is not so hypocritical, love of the game still seems to be paramount, could as a Gooner still be riveted by the gutsiness of the blues….gelb karten have decimated the reds backline, since that was already the weak link is that good or bad? at Tech, kids like Roddy more common, kids like kidney less common than most D1 schools(i.e.-lsu’s new qb)…….Neal said it was crazy talk for me to suggest moving Mueller to center D-back……

Barnhart had an article about Johnson yester day.
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/story/18826424/johnson-quietly-carving-out-legacy-in-shadow-of-georgia-tech-legends

CPJ is 2 – 10 vs Va Tech, UGA, Bowl Game.

Including 0 for the last 6

Not only is he not a legend, what has he done at all ?

What is his signature win ?

A three point fluke over UGA ?

Thats over 4 years ago. Been a long time.
