An interesting week for former Georgia Tech A-back Roddy Jones. Wednesday night, he was at the Fox Theatre as a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Thursday morning, he’ll be a guest host on 790 the Zone’s Barnhart & Durham show. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he plans to be in WREK’s broadcast booth for the Georgia Tech baseball team’s games at Russ Chandler Stadium. He’s also got his MBA classes. And then he’s hoping to get a phone call from one of 32 NFL teams telling him they want his services.
“I’m excited about what this weekend’s going to hold for me,” Jones said prior to Wednesday’s awards ceremony.
To answer the first question, Jones did not win the award, created to honor a sports professional and a student-athlete for their character, leadership on and off the field and contribution to sport and society. The winner was Aleca Hughes, a former Yale ice hockey player who started a foundation to honor a teammate who had died from leukemia.
“This is probably at the top,” Jones said, referring to the list of honors he has received. “It’s a national award named after Coach John Wooden, which is an honor in itself. Coach (Vince) Dooley being here (as chair of the selection committee) and all the different finalists from different places, it’s definitely an honor.”
Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt was also on hand to receive the professional Wooden Citizenship Cup. Coach Paul Johnson, A-backs coach Lamar Owens and team chaplain Derrick Moore joined Jones’ family in support of him.
As for the draft, Jones said he had received phone calls from a few teams to confirm his health and to make sure they had the right phone number for the draft weekend, a good sign.
“Even if they’re just calling to get my cell phone number, it means they want it,” he said.
Jones’ likely route to the NFL is as an undrafted free agent, a path many Tech players have taken to reach the league. That would most likely happen Saturday afternoon after the seven rounds of the draft conclude.

Enter your comments hereI set here and read every word ya’ll post. Some make me laugh–some make me chuckle–some make me kinda sad by reminding me of what I missed out on–some irritate me–some make me mad–and then there are the ones that just plain confuse the Hell out of me. WnE has me sooooo confused. Did he go or not? Did he go to GT? His answers to the questions presented to him tonight read as though he actually did go to GT. Did he graduate? If so, why does he post his proof of at least getting far enough to purchase a class ring. Then he cheapens said ring by posting it here, sitting atop a lottery ticket. He further, IMHO, denigrates the ring by blacking out the year. Is he not proud of it? I would NEVER take mine off. I went just long enough to know how hard it is, especially for a man with a wife and a full time job. I so regret not finding a way to go to GT. I just don’t understand how you–WnE– can be so critical of GT football. Here I am knowing what I missed out on and there you are slamming what I love. I can’t see any way for you to justify your behavior. I want to see success on the field as much as any person alive. As much as anyone that went and “got out” of GT loves the thing that is GT, I can promise all of you who read this that my love of the “GIT” is right there with yours. So WnE, if you did indeed go to GT, grad or not, I would like an explanation of how you can possibly have so much animosity towards this part of what makes up GT. How can you possibly be so negative towards GT & it’s football HC, CPJ. He surely does something you can agree with. Nobody is perfect. By the same token, nobody is imperfect.

Gruden on Baylor: they throw a lot of bubble screens, which inflates stats and the passing is a simple passing offense which usually features a single read. That doesn’t sound like a pro-style offense to me.

@ 1 4 GT…..give up. WnE does not respond to rational questions or challenges. He is what he is, and I don’t think he’s going to change. I just wish we could pizz him off so much he would leave and never come back. He would definitely not be missed.

Yes I occasionally go to the lunch bunch because I am a GT FAN!
I wanted to hear what sort of crappy excuses CPJ would make for GT’s poor Recruiting.
Of course he blamed the lack of majors, when CPJ first got to GT, he said that he & his staff would be able to do mazing things recruiting-wise with those “extra 100 points on the SAT” (a reference to the fact that Navy has tougher entrance Reqs. than does GT).
Now going into his 6th recruiting Class, he’s parroting the same crap that the excuse-making, loser-schmuck segment of the GT Fanbase has been spouting since Dodd screwed up and took us out of the SEC.
He’s takes the job and promises better recruiting and just 5 yrs. in he “learns” what excuses resonate with the GT fans and so he starts to use those same LAME excuses to buy him more time to cash in on his $2.5 million windfall.
Talk about a fake, phony-@$$, snake-oil salesman!

I’m trying really hard to give WnE the benefit of the doubt and show one on one respect. He answered the questions about GT life on campus in such a manner as to apparently satisfy the guys who were asking the questions. I just want to know why he hates on CPJ & GT so much. Is there not something, no matter how small, that he can give some measure of credit to CPJ & GT for doing right?

I had the privilege of meeting Vince Dooley while he was coaching at Georgia and I was working in Atlanta radio. I think it was was highly appropriate that he won the first ever Bobby Dodd coach of the Year award. I don’t like what Vince’s teams did to our Jackets, but I have enormous respect for Vince the man.
