Busy week for Roddy Jones

An interesting week for former Georgia Tech A-back Roddy Jones. Wednesday night, he was at the Fox Theatre as a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Thursday morning, he’ll be a guest host on 790 the Zone’s Barnhart & Durham show. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he plans to be in WREK’s broadcast booth for the Georgia Tech baseball team’s games at Russ Chandler Stadium. He’s also got his MBA classes. And then he’s hoping to get a phone call from one of 32 NFL teams telling him they want his services.

“I’m excited about what this weekend’s going to hold for me,” Jones said prior to Wednesday’s awards ceremony.

To answer the first question, Jones did not win the award, created to honor a sports professional and a student-athlete for their character, leadership on and off the field and contribution to sport and society. The winner was Aleca Hughes, a former Yale ice hockey player who started a foundation to honor a teammate who had died from leukemia.

“This is probably at the top,” Jones said, referring to the list of honors he has received. “It’s a national award named after Coach John Wooden, which is an honor in itself. Coach (Vince) Dooley being here (as chair of the selection committee) and all the different finalists from different places, it’s definitely an honor.”

Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt was also on hand to receive the professional Wooden Citizenship Cup. Coach Paul Johnson, A-backs coach Lamar Owens and team chaplain Derrick Moore joined Jones’ family in support of him.

As for the draft, Jones said he had received phone calls from a few teams to confirm his health and to make sure they had the right phone number for the draft weekend, a good sign.

“Even if they’re just calling to get my cell phone number, it means they want it,” he said.

Jones’ likely route to the NFL is as an undrafted free agent, a path many Tech players have taken to reach the league. That would most likely happen Saturday afternoon after the seven rounds of the draft conclude.

On those opinionated percentages gollum posted, my opinion is that probably 75% of Tech people like Johnson. That doesn’t mean we don’t find faults from time to time, but, like I said earlier, people found faults with Dodd from time to time too; nobody’s perfect. But in spite of ANY faults I might have with Johnson, I support him 100%, and in all honesty I expect some BIG things ahead.

I am aware of what they wrote. To the extent that you think they are wrong, perhaps you should try leading by example and not mentioning them in an unsolicited manner. That would be the grown-up thing to do.

“You guys always seem to mention me before I mention you guys; responding to specific messages are a different story, I respond to specific comments, I don’t make a post and then throw someone’s name in there and take a “drive by cheap shot” like many of you guys do to me so frequently!”

You routinely take cheap (but non-humorous) shots at people before they are mentioned. Again, if you object to this behavior, don’t engage in it. Further, you routinely neglect messages that are critical of you and call you on your factual inaccuracies or made up dialogue. Funny how that works.

“I haven’t used any nicknames for CPJ in quite a while, but you guys still take cheap shots at me and continue to ignore Ken’s request to stop the name-calling.”

You just did this two days ago and I called you on it. You don’t have the moral high ground here, chief.

“You guys are always begging for me to be banned, but the TRUTH is, is that I’m one of the FEW posters that keeps things “clean” and focuses only on CFB-related commentary!:”

No, you don’t. Go back to the 5th paragraph of your 5:09 comment TODAY. Again, if you want to lecture others, I would suggest you make sure your house is clean first. And then maybe you can go make up some more dialogue for us.

Yet another 4*+ recruit that had the ACADEMICS for GT (and was a GT Legacy to boot) that Coach Kung Fu Panda wasn’t able to close the deal on!

His dad played for GT on their last MNC team, yet GT loses out to Auburn.

Maybe his father has been reading the AJC blogs and see how much the GT fanbase pokes fun at JUCOs and then remembers that he was once a JUCO and decided that he didn’t want his son playing for a school that has such a smug, elitist fanbase?

I wonder where the usual crowd is that always takes cheap shots at JUCOs without realizing that some of those JUCOs will have sons that are elite recruits.

You know who you are; GTBob, Supersize, George Stein, FL Jacket , High tech , and there are others.

It seems that the non-stop criticism of JUCOs by GT fans like those I listed above probably made it hard for a former JUCO himself to want to see his own son at GT, he even endorsed Auburn one of GT’s long time rivals.

To show how crappy Coach Fish Fry is at Recruiting, Aubie beat out UCLA, even a tool like Jim “don’t call me Junior” Mora can recruit Atlanta better than Coach Fish Fry can.

That was from March 4th BEFORE Ken S. told us to “play nice”.

Since then, I have complied with Ken’s wishes moreso than many others around here that like to take cheap shots at me.

But since you pull up that post, if you take the way Carl Lawson Sr. is indifferent about GT and combine that with the way Najee Mustafaa(sp?) is indifferent about GT, one must ask, is there something about the GT “environment” that makes former players to not want to send their sons to GT.

We should have those two 4* guys in the bag and they both have the Academic for GT, but for some reason one father says, ” I want my son to have well-rounded college experience” and the other father says, “I won’t push him to sign with GT”.

A LOT is wrong with the way GT does things ,but all you can do is unfairly blame WnE.

I have said plenty of positive things about GT players, both former & current.

I was one of the FEW GT fans on various GT Message boards that defended Dwyer, Burnett & others when they went pro early, in fact many of my critics were the main ones taking shots at former GT players.

I have also defended many of the one-and-done B-Ball players that get unfairly criticized by a lot of GT fans.

Perhaps a simple, “Roddy is a terrific ambassador for Tech and I’m thankful he attended and played for us” would have been more appropriate. Anyone that has a problem with a player chasing his dreams needs to have his head examined. That you think you’re some sort of hero in this circumstance shows how screwed up you are.

Bi Cri 75 the PROBLEM with JUCOs is if they didn’t have the grades for SCHOOL to get in TECH from the start then TECH will TAX his ability to stay in TECH. Not saying some JUCO’s can’t but it is a stretch and a risk over a High School kid that has the scores and grades. The JUCO plays FOOTBALL great BUT how hard was the class work he did to qualify.
