Busy week for Roddy Jones
An interesting week for former Georgia Tech A-back Roddy Jones. Wednesday night, he was at the Fox Theatre as a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Thursday morning, he’ll be a guest host on 790 the Zone’s Barnhart & Durham show. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he plans to be in WREK’s broadcast booth for the Georgia Tech baseball team’s games at Russ Chandler Stadium. He’s also got his MBA classes. And then he’s hoping to get a phone call from one of 32 NFL teams telling him they want his services.
“I’m excited about what this weekend’s going to hold for me,” Jones said prior to Wednesday’s awards ceremony.
To answer the first question, Jones did not win the award, created to honor a sports professional and a student-athlete for their character, leadership on and off the field and contribution to sport and society. The winner was Aleca Hughes, a former Yale ice hockey player who started a foundation to honor a teammate who had died from leukemia.
“This is probably at the top,” Jones said, referring to the list of honors he has received. “It’s a national award named after Coach John Wooden, which is an honor in itself. Coach (Vince) Dooley being here (as chair of the selection committee) and all the different finalists from different places, it’s definitely an honor.”
Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt was also on hand to receive the professional Wooden Citizenship Cup. Coach Paul Johnson, A-backs coach Lamar Owens and team chaplain Derrick Moore joined Jones’ family in support of him.
As for the draft, Jones said he had received phone calls from a few teams to confirm his health and to make sure they had the right phone number for the draft weekend, a good sign.
“Even if they’re just calling to get my cell phone number, it means they want it,” he said.
Jones’ likely route to the NFL is as an undrafted free agent, a path many Tech players have taken to reach the league. That would most likely happen Saturday afternoon after the seven rounds of the draft conclude.

Super, yeah I was 17 when Herschel hit hit the scene, still the best college football player I’ve ever seen. Can’t believe UGA balks at the idea of a statue. Don’t get to as many games as I would like to. Hope to get my grandson out to a few games in the next few years, he just turned 7 and I think he’s finally old enough to appreciate the atmosphere. Was hoping to get to the Friday night game, but other obligations got in the way. Doesn’t hurt that his dad’s a huge Syracuse fan and can’t wait until the orange joins the ACC. I’ll drop you an e-mail when I get an opportunity. Gotta think of my “proof” so that you can verify me.

Don’t forget Dooley was one of the FIRST to do a PACKAGE DEAL scholarship offer to get a player. Herschel’s Older sister was given a FULL RIDE Track Scholarship the year before Herschel accepted the Trans AM and UGa football scholarship.

Congrats Roddy, I am extremely proud of you and I know your family are too, this gentleman is the very example of student athlete, better yet the very example of a excellent STUDENT – ATHLETE, I hate to say things like this because I should watch my tongue, but I bet there are a many UGA fans that remember the 50 yard run, but I regress, its about Roddy and I wish him the very BEST!!

LEE YES YES I am. LOL. DAD traded up a lil on our seats for this year. We moved 2 rows higher but 10 yrds closer to the 50 and are still on the end of the row. He typically misses the 3rd week in OCT game because of the Church Choir Retreat. I will keep in touch and maybe you can use his ticket. Well If you can HANG with me and Supper. LOL
