An interesting week for former Georgia Tech A-back Roddy Jones. Wednesday night, he was at the Fox Theatre as a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Thursday morning, he’ll be a guest host on 790 the Zone’s Barnhart & Durham show. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he plans to be in WREK’s broadcast booth for the Georgia Tech baseball team’s games at Russ Chandler Stadium. He’s also got his MBA classes. And then he’s hoping to get a phone call from one of 32 NFL teams telling him they want his services.
“I’m excited about what this weekend’s going to hold for me,” Jones said prior to Wednesday’s awards ceremony.
To answer the first question, Jones did not win the award, created to honor a sports professional and a student-athlete for their character, leadership on and off the field and contribution to sport and society. The winner was Aleca Hughes, a former Yale ice hockey player who started a foundation to honor a teammate who had died from leukemia.
“This is probably at the top,” Jones said, referring to the list of honors he has received. “It’s a national award named after Coach John Wooden, which is an honor in itself. Coach (Vince) Dooley being here (as chair of the selection committee) and all the different finalists from different places, it’s definitely an honor.”
Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt was also on hand to receive the professional Wooden Citizenship Cup. Coach Paul Johnson, A-backs coach Lamar Owens and team chaplain Derrick Moore joined Jones’ family in support of him.
As for the draft, Jones said he had received phone calls from a few teams to confirm his health and to make sure they had the right phone number for the draft weekend, a good sign.
“Even if they’re just calling to get my cell phone number, it means they want it,” he said.
Jones’ likely route to the NFL is as an undrafted free agent, a path many Tech players have taken to reach the league. That would most likely happen Saturday afternoon after the seven rounds of the draft conclude.

@ BTTF…..the dwags may make fun of Groh because of his age, but age brings experience, and with both age and experience usually bring wisdom. Groh is no dummy; he didn’t last that long in the business doing less with more; he was almost always handicapped at UVA, and yet, although not world-beaters, they fielded some good teams. If he can get Tech’s defensive players to do what they are being coached to do, I think the defense could be very good this year, and probably excellent next year. There comes a point when the coaches have done just about all they can do, and the responsibility lies with the players. Tenuta could obviously teach his players HOW to do it, but too many of them only seemed to do what they had been taught when they wanted to. And although I think Tenuta produced a measure of FEAR in his players, I get the impression that Groh produces RESPECT. And you can go a lot further if you respect your coach than you can if you fear him, because fear often produces resentment.

@ 5 star…..fair enough, although I’m not sure I totally TRUST any of the recruiting sources. They can be a gauge, but they are certainly not as accurate as what some would have us believe, and I doubt that even the so-called impartial ones are really all that objective either.

Super, I generally take EVERYTHING I read or hear with a huge grain of salt. Trust, but verify. To Carvell’s credit, I kinda stalked him for a few days posting repeatedly that he was a UGA biased hack and he never deleted a comment or banned me. I ran out of steam, so maybe I stopped before I reached his limit. And it didn’t hurt that Tony Parker picked UCLA on Monday. I never thought for a moment UGA was even a possibility. I suspect he only listed them as a means of keeping the local media interested. His hour+ selection ” show” on Monday makes me think I may have been right.

Agree Super, not sure if I believe all the talk of Mark Fox being the one to take this program to the promised land. Seems to have regressed a bit from a decent start. Just never felt right to me that it was UCLA, Kansas, Duke, three of the most storied programs in the history of NCAA bball, and UGA. That math just never came out right for me. The positives that Carvell listed for UGA were the opportunity to be close to home and help build a program. Not a great sell in comparison.

Super, yes I knew that. I also know that in the time period that UGA and Tech co-existed in the SEC, we had more Conference championships in both football and basketball. And I also know that when you point these facts out, the trolls accuse you of having to resort to “ancient” history to have any accolades.

@ 5 star, they also don’t remember that until the 60’s they had one of the smallest stadiums in the south east, and occasionally even played home games at Grant Field just so they could fill up a stadium. They may have won a few SEC championships in football before Tech left, but in general, when you talked about SEC football until the mid 60s, you talked about Alabama and Tech.

@ 5 star……you never said earlier if you go to the games (some here are BIG fans, but are unable to get to the games). I sort of took it upon myself about a year ago to start compiling a list of email addresses for the regular bloggers so that we could try to get together when we ARE at a game. Several of us have already met, and hopefully more of us will in the future. In fact, there were 7 of us who met last Friday night, 5 for dinner, one who stopped by while we were eating, and one more who joined us at halftime. If you would like to be on the list, please drop me an email at my temporary email address (supersizeorder@yahoo.com). Just offer some kind of “proof” that you are the real “5 star…”, and I will give you my real email address and add you to the list. And don’t worry, I don’t forward all kinds of crap to those on the list; I just try to keep them informed of anything going on. Only those who have become actual friends ever get anything else from me. Would love to have you on the list if you are interested. Just drop me an email at that address when you get a chance.

5150, did Vince and Buck”hand it to Herschel” Belue really have anything to do with that title? Luckiest two men in the history of college football. Dooley was at best an above average coach, and then a new trans-am showed up in Wrightsville and next thing you know, he’s in the hall of fame.
