Busy week for Roddy Jones

An interesting week for former Georgia Tech A-back Roddy Jones. Wednesday night, he was at the Fox Theatre as a finalist for the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Thursday morning, he’ll be a guest host on 790 the Zone’s Barnhart & Durham show. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, he plans to be in WREK’s broadcast booth for the Georgia Tech baseball team’s games at Russ Chandler Stadium. He’s also got his MBA classes. And then he’s hoping to get a phone call from one of 32 NFL teams telling him they want his services.

“I’m excited about what this weekend’s going to hold for me,” Jones said prior to Wednesday’s awards ceremony.

To answer the first question, Jones did not win the award, created to honor a sports professional and a student-athlete for their character, leadership on and off the field and contribution to sport and society. The winner was Aleca Hughes, a former Yale ice hockey player who started a foundation to honor a teammate who had died from leukemia.

“This is probably at the top,” Jones said, referring to the list of honors he has received. “It’s a national award named after Coach John Wooden, which is an honor in itself. Coach (Vince) Dooley being here (as chair of the selection committee) and all the different finalists from different places, it’s definitely an honor.”

Former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt was also on hand to receive the professional Wooden Citizenship Cup. Coach Paul Johnson, A-backs coach Lamar Owens and team chaplain Derrick Moore joined Jones’ family in support of him.

As for the draft, Jones said he had received phone calls from a few teams to confirm his health and to make sure they had the right phone number for the draft weekend, a good sign.

“Even if they’re just calling to get my cell phone number, it means they want it,” he said.

Jones’ likely route to the NFL is as an undrafted free agent, a path many Tech players have taken to reach the league. That would most likely happen Saturday afternoon after the seven rounds of the draft conclude.

Crawl back in your hole headley—-and pull it closed behind you. Been watching ESPN this AM. Stephen Hill’s name being thrown out quite a bit. Some of the commentators are now saying he will go inside the top 15. Their assessment of him starts with his speed, mentions his lack of route running experience but returns to his “raw” talent. Everyone is enthused by his speed & blocking and highlights show some amazing catches–catches that I didn’t recognize as being so difficult until they are shown with more positive commentary. We’ll know for sure by bedtime tonight. GOOOOO STHEPHEN HILL GOOOOOOOOOO JACKETS THWGeorgie

@ Lee and 1 4 GT…….did y’all notice in Ken’s article on Q&A’s about the T-Night game, that he said both TW and Vad operated out of the shotgun a few times. I don’t remember seeing a shotgun formation, and I thought we talked about that afterwards. Am I wrong?

And congrats to Roddy Jones. I hope his dreams of playing in the NFL workout for him, but he really doesn’t need it. Sounds like his plate is plenty full now.

I am listening to Wes’s radio interview with Roddy now. Roddy comes across as one of the most well-spoken football players I have ever heard.

I don’t recall seeing any shotgun. All the QB snaps that I saw. were from under center. Got errands to run. Later. Seeya.

From that article —
“Synjyn Days did what he does well, making plays with his legs. He was dynamic running a read-option play out of the shotgun.”

“Vad Lee made plays out of the passing game and showed some burst carrying the ball. He, too, flourished in the shotgun set.”

If he was just referring to spring practice as a whole, he wasn’t all that clear

DHEA is a substance that the body has less of as it ages. It is associated with cardiovascular health and a number of other issues.

The truth scares him, thus making him lash-out on GT blogs.

Super, I’m still pi**ed about the shot he took at Tech a few weeks ago when writing about Tony Parkers final four college choices. To make it even worse, when called on it in the comments, he tried to justify it by pointing out that Duke has in fact owned Tech in basketball the last thirty years, missing the point that, whether true or not, the shot at Tech had no place in the article at all. Came off sounding like one of these trolls we have on these blogs. Then he went and edited the comment . Pure hack in my opinion.

After years of UGA bias in the recruiting blog, that was the last straw for me. You must be a better man than me Super. I expect a “professional journalist” to conduct himself at a higher level than some anonymous troll on these comment boards, and he failed. If he would have admitted that it was uncalled for and apologized, it would have been over for me, but instead he tried to justify it and then edited it out like it never happened.
