6 Tech spring practice observations

Great work Ken…

Again, I wish I could have been at the Spring game on Friday night. Even though our OL was held together with duct tape, I still feel good about our defense showing out – especially in the first half.

The backup QB spot needs to be settled by end of Fall. If it’s Synjyn, Vad is too good to be sitting there with Dennis Andrews and Justin Thomas coming in. If the back up is Vad, let’s get Synjyn on the field at A-Back and emergency QB.

Hopefully a couple of AG’s defensive studs will breakout this Fall. If not, he might be out of a job.

He had plenty of outstanding D players at UVA. Now, just needs some here at GT! If it can be down there, it can definitely be done here.

I’d like to see the punters shoot for CONSISTENCY more than #1 in net punting (from 54th in 2011). Consistency would seem to be a much more attainable goal. Although, I guess if you’re #1 in net punting then that can’t be done without consistency.

dwagfan, you’re a putz. So what’s wrong with adding features to improve the overall quality of the evening? There was an actual game-day atmosphere Friday night, instead of the usual BORING spring-game atmosphere. The game itself was still the focus, and lots of things were learned in the playing of the game. So what if you have 30,000 people who have nothing better to do on a Saturday afternoon than fight the traffic and parking in Athens to watch what I am sure is a boring Spring game there too (they ALL are); it sounds like we both had about 30% of the stadium capacity at our respective games.

I feel pretty sure that the story of this season will be based on the performance of the defense. The offense is what it is – a highly productive, high scoring unit that most teams will struggle against. If the defense can stop the run without having to commit more than six to doing so, the defense will improve.

at 0730 hrs, CMR had a bowel movement, it was #3 on the Bristol Stool Scale. It was brown in color and weighrf 14.3 oz. There was no corn. Results were sent to King and Towers.

The VT game is huge and I think we really want to win it and will.
If Days’s problem is turnovers, just sub him now and then and tell him to run it.
Actually no need to tell him.
His problem is he makes the decision to keep it most of the time but he does look like the second coming of Joshua.
Tevin should look at his form in the Clemson game to figure out what he did so right that night.

I was there with the wife and all three kids. Great atmosphere. Proud to say my youngsters all made it through the whole game, even the fireworks.

Anybody who know anything about the GT roster would know that this wasn’t the cleanest game simply because of the OL play. With 4 guys out who will see significant PT during the season, we only had 10 OLs (including walk ons) for both teams in the spring game. So, we had walk ons playing the entire game on both sides. Not a good recipe for seeing how consistent the offenses could be.

Jabari Hunt-Days was a revelation to me. He was everywhere. He’s still young and makes mistakes, but for a guy who has never seen a college snap, he was incredible. Makes me feel a lot better about the loss of Burnett and Drummond suspension.

@ George, I agree, and I didn’t mean what I posted to imply otherwise. I just meant that there were some good SIGNS of improvement there Friday night. Whether they translate to real game play won’t be known till Labor Day. And, yes, I liked Vad’s passing too. He won’t in all likelihood start against VT (nor should he), but I DO think he is the future for Tech, and that future may come sooner than later.

I like having a special team’s coach instead of 2 OL coaches.
Better late than never.
I also like being loaded at QB.
In 2008, who was it we nearly lost to when 1st and 2nd string QBs were injured?
And no production from 2nd string QB in 2008 vs FSU nearly cost us that game after Joshua was injured.
I recall 4 injuries – one for a quarter vs Uga – in Joshua’s career.
The Bama guy is plenty good too but a likely red shirt.

I thought Attaochu looked like he was ready to take The Leap, FLJ. Hunt-Days looks like a 25 year old man in a 19 year old’s body. Louis Young had a nice tackle on a goal line play that I thought showed he has the physical abilities to make plays, too.

In my 60 years, I have seen one spring game my grandfather took me to.
I was tempted this year but family concerns made it impossible.

Drove up to the Flats with the family on Friday. Everyone had a great time. I wonder where that shotgun formation we’ve been hearing so much about was? Defense looked good but with a decimated O-line I don’t feel entirely comforted. Hopefully we’ll make a good run this year.

My hope for the QB situation…

2012 – TW is the starter. Vad Lee win the backup spot. Synjyn Days goes into the A-Back rotation and is the emergency #3 QB. Dennis Andrews is officially the #3 QB but likely redshirts. Justin Thomas redshirts.

2013 – Open competition for starting QB job, with most likely Vad Lee winning the job. Justin Thomas, Dennis Andrews, and Timmy Byerly fight it out for #2…guess that Thomas gets the #2 QB spot, Byerly #3, and Andrews goes into A-Back rotation. Next QB recruit is redshirted (hopefully its Juwaan Williams from Tucker HS). Even if Justin Thomas is #2, he gets lots of playing time in the Pistol formation in designated drives.

2014 – Vad Lee/Justin Thomas again are the 1/2…although an open competition. Justin Thomas cross-trains and plays other positions if not the starter.

BTW, the punt returner got the blame vs Miami but it was likely poor coaching of the special teams.
Just a hunch no one told him not to gamble on picking the ball up off the ground, especially deep in your own territory.
Guess the fan near me should have yelled louder and coached him from the stands since no one else did.

Tech’s season will depend on the defense. The offense, for the most part, has been consistant. However; scoring 30 points a game does no good when the defense allows 40. As I said in the past. Hiring AGroh was one of the worst things CPJ has done. If there isn’t a huge improvement this year, I seriously hope CPJ tosses AGroh out on on his butt. Until the defense can get to the level it needs to, GT can’t contend for any titles. Much less a win vs. UGA, VT or anyone else. For some reason we can play very well against Clemson, but suck against everyone else. Just my 2 cents worth.

FL, I sure hope you are correct. I am defensive minded… So when I see GT playing and how out of position they are, it drives me crazy. Either the coaching is off or the players don’t listen. The way the 3-4 is ran, is not used to what I am seeing. I never like CAG. I thought he was horrible at UVA and that opinion hasn’t changed. However; I remain hopeful. If CPJ wants to stay out of the hotseat, he better produce more wins and that includes a win over the doggies of UGA… Which, still has a damned good QB and can pick almost any team apart. So, the DB’s better have their A game for that one.

From what I’m reading on here re: Hunt-Days, it appears that JB (very unfortunate way to end a career) or DD (stupid personal decisions) might be JH-D’s “Wally Pip”. Q.Nealy showed us, as true FR, last season, he could develop into a beast at middle LB. Now add JH-D to the mix it appears …

Vs. VT in 2010 ……… Jmonty, besides JN’s injury (had he not waited until AA reached the goal line to throw the ball, it’s a easy TD, no injury) the special teams allowed a 90 KO return TD as well.

And wasn’t TW’s game ending INT in the end zone?

IMO, 2011 vs VT boiled down to a single penalty. Take away the PF, and I believe GT would’ve score again, demorilizing VT with a double-digit lead headed to the 4th qtr.

Really? None of you have read a single analysis on Hill?
His biggest problem is his explosion off the line, and route running.

Cris Collinsworth noted that his 4.3 speed would be more like a 4.7 in game speed because he doesn’t get off the line well because he has little route running experience.

NFL.com: “He ran a very basic route tree at Georgia Tech that didn’t allow him to showcase many skills. Outside of catching jump balls, he struggles to read coverages and understand how to find holes in a zone. Hill looks uncomfortable with the ball in his hands and resembles a lengthy track star on the field instead of a football player.”

Some others:
“Needs to refine his route running, wasn’t asked to run a full route tree at Georgia Tech and needs to be coached up a bit…”
“Does not consistently extend his hands to offer the quarterback a target. Rarely asked to run precise routes in college.”

And then there’s this one which has EIGHT of 10 bulleted negatives at least indirectly related to his college system:
• Lack of production at Georgia Tech (28 catches for 820 yards and 5 touchdowns as a junior)
• Not that experienced (1 year of production)
• Raw route runner
• Limited route tree
• Played in a triple option
• Projection to a Pro Style offense
• Has some trouble with drops
• Never saw tough coverage as defenses were focused on the run
• More of a decoy than anything in college
• Very raw and not NFL ready

The current climate of College Athletics, in particular football, is so far out of control, Computer Science is being clipped in favor of the Sports budget!
It’s simply unfair for the Academic First BCS Institutions such as Alabama, GT, Northwestern, Stanford, Berkeley, Vanderbilt…….to compete anymore.
What Saban has done @ Bama with the Standards in place their is truly remarkable.
I don’t know how He does it year after year!!!!!

I think the bigger frustration with the defense is that they were inconsistent last year. They played very well against Virginia (gave up a net of 17 points), Miami (17 again), and Clemson. Then they stunk out loud against VT and Duke. Most games, if they can hold the other team to 21 points, the offense will score 22.

Fair enough. Utah’s QB wasn’t by any means a stud, and we gave them plenty of space to work and missed tackles. Then the offense tried keeping it up the middle and run clock (which worked against Clemson int he 4th quarter) and the offense didn’t execute this time.

We significantly ease the pressure on out defense by hitting at least 1 of those FGs though…

Of course it should be the third year in the system, but for the 3-4 to be effective, you’ve got to have a dominating nose tackle, and I don’t see it. None of the names at end jump out either, but they have some experience.

I think the B-backs need more watching. Ya’ll need a consistent bruiser at this spot.

What a great job by Saban to make everyone forget what the University of Alabama is really supposed to be doing the other 358 days of the year that there are no football games in Tuscaloosa.

FL Jacket, if Hill is a first round talent, then Coach Fishfry should have gotten him the ball 50-60 times. YPC can be misleading if you hardly ever throw to the guy. And usually he only had single coverage as the extra safety was needed to support the run.

He was a fourth round pick with comparable measurables to Hill. TDs are a useless metric by which to judge player performance. Perhaps you’d also like to tell me how many RBIs a baseball player has. You’ll need to delineate the respective scouting reports if you want me to critique each one.

If secondary is strong, there will be need for lbs next, b/c can’t have secondary always running to cover receivers and make the plays. The lbs could not tackle Logan Thomas, not even gang tackling him. So the big need is for lbs. There’s a need for des to rush in from the outside to tackle qbs, which they aren’t doing enough. Maybe Chongdong can do this on one side of d line. Opposing teams will pass like crazy to gamble letting the ball go in the air and not completing it, taking the concept of gambling directly to Tech and the “gambling helluva engineers”. They always do, particularly out of the shotgun. The d line need another Rock Perdoni. He was at Tech when I was. Just his strength is why he was so good. Strength is why Nez was so good, as evidenced when he stole the ball from the FSU ball carrier. If Nez benched 375, that’s strong for a qb. So strength is what wins games for Tech, and is what Tech needs always, either from recruits, or there while at Tech.

When you are trying to keep the game to 10-12 possessions, and attempting to control 30-40 minutes of clock per game…you don’t throw it 50-60 times to 1 player because they might be a 1st round NFL pick. With our current QB, that strategy would have lost us more games than won us.

We would have lost to Boise and USC and beat all the other teams the dwags played and beat…..Ole Miss??? Miss State??? Vandy??? KY??? Coastal Carolina??? NM State??? Foster and Beamer have been at VT for the same duration, 25 years. Beamer’s a former VT player, though. I can’t see him making any move; not to Notre Dame, not to Alabama, not to Texas, not to Southern Cal, not to the Patriots, nowhere. Plus, he’s my age, and we’re sort of settled in.

That’s not a bad payday for a guy that was expected to be buried on the depth chart that took advantage of Green’s 4-game-rip from the NCAA, used it to make himself part of UGA’s permanent WR-rotation, and then went on to have a good Sr. yr, and get drafted when no one ever thought he would get drafted.

Going into his Sr. yr. there was some doubt that Durham would even get a FA camp invite.

Now take Kris Durham and put him at GT playing for CPJ, do you still think he gets that kind of Contract (4th round) that he got above?

That’s the difference between playing in a Pro-Style Off. vs. playing in a triple-OPtion Offense.

As with all projections, it’s hard to know for certain until the fall, but tweaks to the scheme and the development of the defensive line should make this unit better. Ends Izaan Cross, Euclid Cummings and Emmanuel Dieke look capable and nose tackle T.J. Barnes may be ready to realize his potential in his final season. Perhaps the biggest question of the summer, literally and figurative, will be how much conditioning work Barnes and backup Shawn Green put in in order to be ready for the season.

Once again, I disagree Ken.

Our DL is going against a smaller OL specifically Recruited for Triple-OPtion FB.

In the 2nd half of games vs. BCS level teams going up against 315-340 lbs. OLs, do you think that 270-ish pound Dieke, Cummings, Williams are going to hold up and stop the run?

Will they have enough gas to get after QBs and disrupt some throws?

After 3 years at GT, Izaan Cross has gotten worse (it seems) each season, last yr. Cross started out at 290 or so and wore down noticeably as the season went on.

Cross is a 3-yr. starter but he doesn’t have that it factor that you’re looking for.

GT’s DEs need to be “natural” 295- 305lbs to really play well in a 3-4, Cummings, Dieke, and Williams came out of HS in the 240s and have had to be “puffed up” into being DE size, they don’t play like they can naturally carry that kind of weight effectively.

Once again we’ll find out what kind of DL we have when they go up against some legit 310+lb OLines.

I’m not apologizing for anything.

Including WRs, TEs and RBs, over 20 different mutts caught passes last year, saying he was the 8th option doesn’t mean he would NEVER play at UGA.

But then again he would have been shown the route tree and taught how to run patterns and catch with his hands instead of his chest, so he might have been MUCH BETTER than the 8th option with the corresponding BETTER COACHING that he would have gotten at UGA.

So WnE’s story goes like this….
CPJ can’t recruit…. But when he does recruit, he can’t develop the talent… But when he does develop the talent, it was actually somebody else that was really the teacher.
CPJ can’t coach… but when he does a good job getting the most out of his talent, it only looked that way because the opponet was so weak… but when we beat Clemson (3 times in the last 4 years, or UGA in 2008, or FSU in 2008 and 2009, or UNC or VT) it wasn’t really a quality win because we lost so many other games to really good teams and a few games to average teams.

Look WnE, coaches by the numbers did a statistical analysis on what coaches performed best with their talent level. CPJ was one of the highest rated coaches at adding wins to his talent. Now, I’m sure you think we should get better talent, and so do I. But I’m realistic enough to know that we are GT, not some school in the SEC or even FSU or Clemson, so I am realistic that we will always have to try to outperform our talent level to be a consistent winner.

Those of us that like to have facts and statistics to measure performance see CPJ as a solid football coahc and a good fit for GT. Anybody with opinions (that they pretend are facts) can make up any story they want to fit their pre-concieved notions.

@Big Crimson 75… your comment at 12:53 makes no sense, I lived very close to tuscaloosa for about eight years, and considered going to UA to school because many of my friends attend, but I chose not to because their academics are poor haha, idk where you got that information at, but the academics for alabama are no where near any of the other schools listed, Alabama is listed in the 90-100 range on the list for top colleges in the USA. You have to make a 17-20 on your ACT to be accepted to UA, I made an above average score of 26, but I’m no genius so that might tell you something.

Al “Buzz” Preston, who has enjoyed success from Honolulu to South Bend, begins his fourth season in Atlanta as Georgia Tech’s wide receivers coach.
Over the last three seasons, Preston has helped develop a strong corps of receivers, including Demaryius Thomas, a 2009 NFL first-round draft choice by the Denver Broncos.

Thomas, who made remarkable strides in his blocking skills since Preston’s arrival, left the Flats as one of the most prolific receivers in Georgia Tech history. In just three seasons Thomas caught 120 passes for 2,339 yards (fourth-most in Tech history) while averaging 19.5 yards per reception. Thomas had 15 career touchdown receptions and caught at least one pass in 29 consecutive games.
Since Preston’s arrival, Tech has led the ACC in total offense two times (2008 and 2009).

Last year Preston worked with a young group of receivers, including sophomore Stephen Hill, who has emerged as a big-play candidate. In 2010, Hill averaged nearly 20 yards per reception and caught three touchdown passes.

Preston came to Tech after serving one season at New Mexico, where he helped lead the Lobos to their first bowl victory in more than 45 years. As New Mexico’s running backs coach in 2007, Preston coached Lobo junior running back Rodney Ferguson, who earned first team All-Mountain West Conference honors for the second straight year after rushing for 1,177 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Preston has 31 seasons of collegiate coaching experience, including two stints at Stanford (1999-2001, 2006). During his first three-year run with the Cardinal, Preston was part of two bowl teams that were also two of the best squads in Stanford history. He helped coach the Cardinal to the 1999 Pac-10 title on its way to the 2000 Rose Bowl. In 2001, Stanford put together a 9-3 record and was ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation during the year before playing in the Seattle Bowl against Georgia Tech.

Following his three seasons at Stanford, Preston went with coach Tyrone Willingham to Notre Dame for three more seasons (2002-04) to coach the running backs and serve as special teams coordinator. He helped lead the Irish to two bowl games with appearances in the Gator Bowl in 2002 and the Insight Bowl following the 2003 regular season.

Under Preston’s tutelage, Julius Jones rushed for 1,268 yards and 10 touchdowns as a senior at Notre Dame in 2003. Jones also had 1,568 all-purpose yards and a school-record three 200-yard rushing games in ‘03 en route to honorable mention All-America honors. Jones went on to be selected in the second round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. In 2002, Irish running back Ryan Grant eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark as well.

Before coming to Stanford for the first time, Preston was the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator/QB coach at UNLV in 1998. Prior to that, he coached running backs at Washington State from 1994-97. During his four-year term at Washington State, Preston was part of a coaching staff that guided the Cougars to the Pac-10 Conference championship in 1997 and its first Rose Bowl appearance in 67 years. The Cougar offense broke the Pac-10 record for most total yards in a single season.

One of Preston’s pupils, Mike Black, gained 1,157 yards rushing and was named All-Pac 10. The Cougars finished 10-2 overall and were ranked ninth in the nation.

Preston also coached at his alma mater, Hawai’i, from 1987-93, when he served on the same coaching staff with Paul Johnson. He had several roles during his tenure with the Rainbows, including coaching the offensive special teams, receivers and defensive backs, while also serving as the strength and conditioning liaison.

Preston’s seven-year stay at Hawai’i was highlighted by the first two bowl games in school history and the first Western Athletic Conference title ever for the program.

In 1989, Hawai’i participated in its first bowl game, losing to Michigan State in the Aloha Bowl. The Rainbows won the WAC championship in 1992 and went on to defeat Illinois in the Holiday Bowl.

Preston’s first full-time coaching job came at Southern Illinois from 1984-86 when he tutored receivers and the defensive backfield. During his three seasons in Carbondale, SIU’s defense improved dramatically — from eighth to second in the conference — while nine of his pupils received all-conference recognition.

He was a graduate assistant at Hawai’i in 1980 and 1981, a part-time coach at UH in 1982, and a graduate assistant at Washington in 1983. During his career, Preston has also been a guest coach for the Toronto Argonauts, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.

A native of Los Angeles, Preston received a bachelor’s degree in speech from Hawai’i in 1982. He was a two-year letterwinner (1978-79) with the Rainbow football team.

Preston is a 1975 graduate of Banning High School in Los Angeles.

Preston and his wife, Audrey, have three children: Amber, Evan and Quinn.

FL Jacket, I agree with you about the unis. The mustard yellow I saw as old gold, and I wouldn’t mind a return to that entire uni again. It was probably responsible for Tech’s success that year by about 50%, with Dwyer 10%, Nez’s accuracy passing to Dwyer and Thomas at 10%, Nez’s running at 10%, and the d’s play with that db who went pro, forgot his name, for the remaining 20%. The sudden drop of that uni against LSU caused the 50% to disappear for the game, which was why Tech lossed. Your suggestion of a dark blue I would agree with if it was the one worn when Ross was coach and Shawn Jones was the qb. That jersey and the white pants were a breath of fresh air blowing down BD from North Georgia on a strong cold front, like when it was 4o degrees at night there in ‘71 or ‘72 when Theisman came to town and we treated Notre Dame to temps they were familiar with, which is probably why they won. That game was freezing. I went to it. There was no global warming societal fad back then. As a matter of fact, there was alot of ice on campus concrete that year such as in front of Alexander, back in the Ice Age.

I apologize for making typos. I have had to put ear drops in an ear that’s been hurting me, and the malaise pain is affecting my conjuration. I hate to make one error. I got 3 B’s and 3 C’s at Tech in English courses. Those profs would have pointed out spelling and grammatical errors on my blue book exams. That comma I typed above after the word night should have been next to that word, not a skipped space away. I’m just not at full speed, am on the dl list right now.

Even if it doesn’t “hurt you” (your words), then why do you have players like Hill that catch only 26 balls over a 12-game reg. season?

On the flip side, if Hill can learn that much in a month (your words again), then WHY couldn’t CPJ or someone on his Staff teach Hill more (after all CPJ had him for 3 -yrs.) so that Hill could produce more for GT in 2011?

Do YOU think that CPJ did a good job of getting everything out of S. Hill while he was at GT?

For the same reason Meyer didn’t rework Tebow’s delivery: it isn’t his job.

I think Johnson has a system that’s been highly effective. It isn’t perfect, but no one said it was. The fact that it is different than what other teams do is problem for closed-minded people like you, and if it he doesn’t bat 1.000 you jump on him. The question is whether Hill did what he was asked while he played at Tech. All indications are that he did his best, and that’s all anyone can ask of him.

Don’t bring up GT’s OOC scheduling philosophy back when Chan was the HC, GT hasn’t considered that kind of scheduling since CPJ showed up.

CPJ wants to play Ole Miss, Vandy or Miss State, he wants no part of Bama, LSU, Florida, Tenn. USCe, or Auburn.

The Bama game was supposed to be in 2012 (?), but I think Bama is playing Michigan at Jerry-world

I’m pretty sure the Bama games were supposed to be 2012 & 13, but I could be wrong.

Listen, anybody who has ever commented on a Georgia blog raise their hand. I sure as Hell have not, nor have I ever read a Georgia blog. I do have some old Georgia acquaintances I met in the past, and they nevetr became enemies. It’s just a fact that Georgia usually beats Tech in football. Why we still play them I have no idea. It’s like fighting a losing battle. Why don’t we play the ACC Heisman college of Clemson for our rival, and only play Georgia if we go bowling? Georgia usually has too much football prowess for us to challenge them. Tech needs to GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER.

Auburn, Alabama, and South Carolina are on the future schedule. Florida won’t leave the state for a non-conference game, we haven’t played LSU in ages in non-bowl games, and I’m pretty sure Johnson would love nothing more than drilling Tennessee (of course you’d say they were a crappy SEC team, so it wouldn’t count).

Sounds like a bunch of double talk so you won’t have to come clean and admit that you’re upset that CPJ didn’t get more out of S.Hill!

At one time we had these guys (all on the same roster) and were NOT a passing threat:

Bay-Bay 6-3 235 lbs 4.37 forty
Kevin Cone 6-2 210lbs. 4.38 forty
S.Hill 6-4 215lbs. 4.36 forty

All of these guys will probably be in the NFL or on a Practice squad at the same time and all CPJ could do was to use them as blockers, decoys and throw LOW PERCENTAGE Jump-ball passes!

Are you satisfied with that given our Genius HC’s rep for getting more out of his talent than the guy on the other sideline?

GT Lee, I’ve seen hs vid of Vad Lee, and I believe he should start, not Tev. I believe Tech needs his skills out of the shotgun, not a running attack out of line up at the los, which is accounting for a loss more and more as teams get used to what Tech lacks w/o the shotgun, which is distance between where the ball will be and the d line beading in on it.

I am sure WnE will find something silly to say about this too, but as far as OOC scheduling, both the Chik Fil’A people AND Tech tried to schedule Southern Cal for the kickoff game at the Dome, but Southern Cal refused.

As far as uniforms go, I HATE HATE HATE any amount of BLUE on the Tech uniforms. I don’t care that some unknown person at Tech decided several years ago that blue is our secondary color, it makes no sense whatsoever. It should be black, NOT blue.

Yeah, that uniform that Lenny Snow (#41) is wearing in that picture is awesome. I liked the black jerseys sometimes worn during the Curry years. It always surprises me that blue was sometimes used way way back in our history. But I still don’t like it. I agree about there being too many different shades of gold too. Pick one and stick with it, or at least make all the merchandise that is sold match it. while it’s being used.

I think I must agree with FLJ in regards to his last comment. My personal preference for uni colors–Old Gold pants–white or black depending on home or away games (which would result in white most of the games) with gold numbers outlined in black or white for contrast–white helmets with Old Gold GT and stripe outlined in black. But I would accept daarrrkkkk blue in place of black jerseys. I kinda agree with the old guard (if they really do care about not wanting black for the reasons stated here) about not wanting anything to do with Georgie colors except for rubbing them in the dirt real good.

@ atlxman……mighty big talk coming from the fan of a 3rd tier SEC team. Tech would have beat every team the mutts beat last year, and you know it. As far as you stopping Tech’s running game, the best you can claim after 4 years of CPJ coaching at Tech is that you stopped the inside running game. You have yet to stop the outside game and only stopped the inside game in 2009 and 2011. Yes, sad to say, the mutts were better than the Jackets last year, but they were in 2008 too, and yet SOMEHOW the Jackets won. And 2 of the remaining 3 times, the games were close enough to go either way. That doesn’t negate the fact that the mutts won those games, but it sure as hell means we have nothing to fear when we play you. VT and Miami are much tougher foes than the Clarke County Chihuahuas.

atlxmen et al UGA fans …….. GT probably was the “signature win” for the dawgs in 2011. Maybe some dawg fans would say AU/UF, either b/c they are SEC teams, or b/c what the Tigers were in 2010, and UF has been (head-to-head) over the past 20 years – IDK.

But really when you look at UGA’s 10 wins, and what those teams really were in 2011, GT is probably the only team that actually outperfomed the “experts’ ” preseason expectations (most thought the Jackets would win 6 games). I’m not real happy with GT’s 2011, b/c I saw L’s that easily could’ve (VT) or should’ve (UVA, Utah) been wins. So, IMO, GT should even been better.

Maybe 2012 will be the year UGA does to GT what they should do 9 out 10 times, win by a blowout (i.e. 51-7 kind of game). But it really baffles me, seeing the way UGA recruits compared to GT and the level of talent/depth in Athens vs. North Ave, how GT keeps the games way closer than they should be.

i have nothing against gt bob or any tech fans. always fun talking football with tech fans. funny how mad they get and how quickly too. i try to explain to them why their team is falling off the face of the earth in football but most seem to think that PJ is getting close to winning 10 games again, so i just sit back and read the lame excuses on these blogs on why tech is not winning against the better teams in college football.

xman, how soon do new recruits consistently perform on a team? Certainly not in their freshmen year, and only a few in their sophomore year. Most of CPJ’s recruits are now juniors (with a few seniors in the mix). Although we DID lose a couple of games we should not have lost last year (with MOSTLY CPJ recruits), the majority of them are now juniors, and whether you want to admit it or not, IMHO, the future is bright.

uva and utah were actually better than tech last year. there play on the field proved that. and uga dominated handy the whole game. handy offense was shut down until the last possession where rogers scrambled for some yards. vandy couldn’t even move the ball after the punt block. the better team won

CPJ’s recruits are just this year coming into their own. This year should prove that they can perform as well as Chan’s recruits did (although we DO need a Dwyer). 2013 should seal the deal for good, and I mean in the best possible way.
