I really like hearing about the improved play of TJ Barnes. For this defense, that is player who must set the tone for the whole front. If he’s playing hard and fast, this will be a successful year. Both of our nose tackles this year were 4* recruits coming out of high school. I’d like to see them live up to that this year.

Hate to hear that about Days and Mason. Both are great young talents. But I would rather they sit out this weekend and be ready for the fall. Just gives other guys a chance to make a mark. Hope to see a good crowd tomorrow night. It will be my first spring game and I am bringing my 12 year old niece with me. Hope to pass on my love for GT down to her… Go Jackets!!!

As for Synjyn, that stinks. I really want to see him on the field. I know most of us don’t remember Reggie Ball well, but Synjyn has all of his good qualities (strong arm, fast/strong runner, and fearless) without the negative ones. I tell you though, I don’t think he’s going to beat out Vad Lee. I really want to see Days on the field at A-back in the fall!

Birmingham- Please explain to me how we have gotten worse under CPJ. Average 8 wins a year with an ACC title, and finished 1st in our division twice in 4 years. Recruiting averages are about the same if not a little better. Time to let 2007 go…

Days should rest the wrist, my guess is he stiff armed someone a little to hard, hope the defensive player is ok.
Great update, nice to hear some new names stepping up, Moore, Williams, Jabari The Hunt, Hill.
Like Hill’s size at B-Back, but also like Zenon and Bostic’s speed, hard call.

Coach Johnson has done a great job recruiting, lot of players battling for jobs and that’s a good thing

Days plays with alot of heart. I hate it that he will miss the Spring Game. Based on what I’ve read, I’m thinking the backfield lineup for the game will be:

1st – Washington, Sims, Godhigh, Hill
2nd – Lee, Perkins, Zenon, Bostic

FL Jacket…you’d almost have two different teams out there: a size team and a speed team. My personal take is that I prefer a size team because our best rushers seem to have been bigger A-backs. But, Roddy Jones was kind of medium and by far the best at springing other backs (Allen, Peeples, Smith) free for long runs by sealing his side. Whomever can block as good as Roddy needs to be the starter opposite Orwin Smith.

If the D line can fill their assignments it sounds like we will be stacked at the LB position to shut down the run. With another year pf experience under their belts the secondary should be able to play some shut down D. I think the defense will be much improved this year

Buzzed…but I don’t believe otherwise. Also, I think your understanding of ED’s point is about as clear as your understanding of irony. Was ED criticizing Tech for having a less strict recreational drug testing policy than UGA or was he whining about UGA having such a strict policy? Even though ED didn’t mention UGA by name, I am assuming both you and ED are fans of UGA. My assumption is based on dwag troll logic that says recreational drug use at other schools somehow gives those schools a competitive advantage. It is UGA that implemented the policy they have, not the NCAA.

I have a young Clemson graduate friend who started off “at the bottom” at a Chiptole restaurant in Spartanburg. He is now in charge of OPENING a new one somewhere else in SC. The cream always rises to the top, and sometimes it happens pretty fast.

Chick-fil-A corporate offices are located in Atlanta. There are several managerial and support functions that college grads can achieve at without being at the store…logistics, purchasing, marketing, real estate, legal, etc…

Chick-fil-A restaurants are franchised out to individual owners, anyway. Tough for recent college grads to muster the necessary cashflow to open their own Chick-fil-A store.

BARK AT THE PARK for Braves games is great. I tried to get Drad to do that for the TECH spring game. It is not like Dodd will be Full. Last year was the first year since he was born that he didn’t get to go to the game.

I think being drunk while on a boat is common, and I think that’s stupid, too. Boating under the influence may be something that is not unusual, but it’s not something everyone does. My friends and I all take turns being the one who conducts the boat if we go for a weekend. On Saturday, I’m going to 420 Fest and I’ll probably have a few too many, but it’s not my turn to drive.

To the extent Johnson has a say here (and he may not), he should remove Drummond from the team. The worst thing that could happen is other players seeing a minor suspension for a major offense, doing the same thing, and hurting themselves or someone else.

@ FLJ, for some reason, people don’t see boating while drinking the same as they see driving while drinking, and that is just wrong. Boating MIGHT not be as much of a risk to others outside the boat, like driving is to other drivers or pedestrians, but it is definitely as much of a risk to those in the boat as it is to others in a car.

This was an OLB, that beat up a student in some sort of altercation, this was no domestic violence situation involving a BF-GF.

I go back and look at an old roster and see if I can come up with a name.

Hell I got Kicked out of the GT v UGA game last year for Drinking and i didn’t tell my Dad that I was at the game with. I got back in the stadium and he never knew until i told him after the game. WHY would a player tell the coach when it happened OFF campus and not during the school year? When a convict calls his probation officer he ALWAYS says YES I caught a new charge. HAHAHA NOT.

It is not CPJ’s job to go and scour the court dockets to see what his FB players are up to, they should come clean and tell the HC when the incident happens.

Georgia Tech inside linebacker Daniel Drummond pleaded guilty Wednesday to boating under the influence and faces a minimum one-game suspension when the season begins in September.

Drummond, who started six games last season and figures to start this season, was arrested last July on Lake Lanier after failing field sobriety and breath tests. Coach Paul Johnson was informed of the matter Wednesday.

“We’ll gather the facts and if it is what it is, he’ll be suspended for 10 percent of the games,” he said.

@ WnE, CPJ wouldn’t have to “scour” the records to find anything. If someone is charged with a crime, and usually even a misdemeanor, that is usually reported in the newspapers as soon as it happens. I have no idea whether this was reported last July or not, but I can assure you that it would have been reported in the Augusta newspaper for ANYBODY charged like this. I don’t know if Drummond should have told CPJ about it or not. I doubt that there is any kind of requirement that he does so.

But, regardless, PLEASE EXPLAIN to us now, how Tech fans are like the Arky fans who didn’t want Petrino fired, when YOU YOURSELF said he shouldn’t be fired.

Imagine if CMR hid behind the “technicality” of separate offenses are not considered being a repeat offender and gave his players light punishment?

Drummond did something that the NCAA thought was serious enough to take away one year of PT, any second offense should be enough to have him booted, especially after he tried to ti HIDE it from the GTAA and the GT coaching Staff.

WnE……you still have no idea whatsoever it Drummond tried to hide anything. All we know is what Ken reported and that is that CPJ was informed of “the matter” yestahday. If “the matter” was the plea, then that doesn’t indicate that he didn’t already know about the original arrest and waited until the court hearing to make any statement or to draw any conclusion. He said that he will now “gather the facts and if it is what it is, he’ll be suspended for 10 percent of the games,” As far as the “repeat offender” charge, you may be right on that one.

Petrino was clean AT ARKY before this incident, all of his “baggage” came at places before his tenure at Arky.

Drummond did something so bad that the NCAA gave him a 1-year-rip; after that a 2nd offense that involves hiding it from the HC should lead to him getting booted.

Petrino was slimeball at other places but had not done anything at Arky before his affair came public.

Days may not play, which means Lee will. If the reports about him are correct, he will complete many. Whether or not the defense does anything will tell the story of the season.

11-win seasons don’t come often in Arkansas especially with that State’s small population and mediocre HS Talent base.

If people start getting fired for having affairs, then roughly 50% of the working population is in line to get terminated since the divorce rate is 50% and the main reason is infidelity.

He had a wreck on on his DAY OFF, why should he even have to disclose to the University who else was involved in the accident?

Would any of us allow our employer to ask us details of a traffic accident that occurred on off time and didn’t involve a Company Car?

Much ado about NOTHING, the man is a CFB HC, not a guidance counselor for HS students.

But why does it seem that CMR easily comes clean pretty quickly when his SAs get into trouble, and when a GT SA gets into trouble the GTAA & CPJ seems to close ranks and cover up as much as possible?

CPJ has been a HC for too long and once was HC at a Service Academy, it is too late for you to try and claim that CPJ had a lapse in judgment, if CPJ did anything wrong then he KNEW what he was doing.

In this case it seems that he didn’t want to lose a starter last season, so CPJ milked the “system”, it might seem smart and cagey, but it brings embarrassment to GT’s FB program and to the Institute.

Mr. Stein, we criticize and compare what we do at GT as being better than other Colleges, so when the shoe is on the other foot we should also compare our Program to the surrounding market to see if our standards are where they should be.

it could be any other College, but UGa happens to be close by and they have had issues before, so the comparisons come pretty easily.

WnE how do you know CPJ was covering up anything? Drummond was just starting last season so sitting him out the first game would have been no big deal.
I would like to know what kind of disclosure agreement these kids agree too. I would think any student athlete involved in any criminal activity would be obligated to let the HC know. Not sure on the circumstances or facts so I will hold my judgement for know.

WnE I agree with you about comparing what other programs do but you need to find a program with similar disciple problems. Gt may have 1% of thier players get in some kind of criminal trouble each year compared to UGA being closer to 10%. You also need to look at factors such as repeat offenders and of course charges involved. I agree I am not so sure a 1 game suspension is enough for this particular player and if he hide or lied about it then the penalties should be MUCH stiffer.

Between Cech’s saves, the clearing of that shot by Andy Cole that almost went in, and the shot in injury time that hit the post (and the rebound that was flubbed)…I was amazed that Barca didn’t score either. It would be the upset of the year if Chelsea went into the Nou Camp (Barcelona) and won the aggregate, but they have a goal to play with.

PJ says he’ll be suspended for 10% of the games (i.e. 1 game) …… what happens when GT plays in the ACC CG and then the bowl game? That’ll be 14 games. Will he have to sit out for half of one those games?

Also, suspended for the 1st game which, in most seasons would be no problem, but not in 2012 as the opening opp is VaTech.

If CPJ knew about the incident and hid it from the Media to avoid punishing the player to keep him on the field and in the lineup, then the 2nd scenario is in play.

BUI should be GS ….. think about it, when people are boating on the lake, how often are they doing it alone? And it’s usally with more people than really should be on the boat.

As far as booting him from the team, I’m kinda of a “three strikes and you’re out” guy. Unless one of the first 2 is serious enough to count as 2+ “strikes” DD didn’t harm anyone with his BUI (I’m not condoning what he did). Had he harmed someone then yeah, he should be done.

IMO, he should be watched like a hawk, and even covertly (to see what he does when nobody’s watching). And any misstep, even unexcusably missing a class, meeting, practice etc, he should be booted. Has has no wiggle room, and rightly doesn’t deserve any.

Sucks that Phil Smith (talent, experience) had to be booted, but the guy proved to be a f-up. DD is on his to PS, but he’s got a chance to straighten up. As a GT fan, I hope he does.

GS…I think Barca’s system lends itself to producing fouls around the box, so they will have chances for a set-piece goal…although they are not as adept at free kicks as you would think. I think they stand the best scoring chances by doing exactly what they did to Chelsea in the first leg.

Look, WnE, I think Drummond should be removed from the team, but there is an alternative. I should preface this by saying it’s all speculation.

He could have told Johnson his version of what happened and the facts may have been in dispute. It’s not unusual for an attorney to encourage his client to accept a plea deal to reduce the risk of prosecution and to put the matter behind a person. Again, we don’t know what happened, but this is a possibility, too.

Drummond needs to get booted off the team he played for a full year knowing that his guilt was fait accompli and he still hid his indiscretion from CPJ & the GTAA.

For a SA that already had a 1-year-rip from the NCAA to act in such an underhanded manner toward GT , its HC and Athl. Administration is unforgivable, he should be booted from GT’s FB program.

Drummond has not acted like a “Tech Man”!

I don’t normally write letters to folks like DRad, but I will write a letter to DRad and copy it to President Peterson telling them why they need to step in and override CPJ’s punishment.

GT cannot have deceivers among their scholarship FB players.

Daniel Drummond should have played his last game as a GT Yellow Jacket.

I’m surprised that CPJ himself hasn’t booted Drummond due to the level of deception that was involved.

Mr. Stein, as long as the breath-a-lyzer or whatever testing equipment was used on Drummond was working properly, then Drummond knew he would eventually be found guilty of something.

When it comes to telling your HC that you got caught drinking under-age, then waiting around for plea-deal technicalities is no excuse for hiding it from your HC.

Once Drummond blew into that machine he knew he would be found guilty or plea guilty at some point in the future, at that point hiding everything from his HC is a cover up.

For that cover up he deserves to get booted from GT’s FB Program.

Turnovers and the DL are the make or break for the season. If the DL is no better than last season then 8 Ws is GT’s ceiling. If they can pressure qbs, up their sack total, and improve to 5th or better (10th in 2011) in the ACC on 3rd down rushing (4.9 yds/rush 2011) then 10+ Ws and an ACC CG appereance it will be in 2012.

QB pressure & more sacks will mean more INTs by the D’s deepest/most talented group, DBs.

CPJ needs to come out and publicly say that even though the School & GTAA has a set policy regarding this incident, Drummond deceived me and my coaching Staff, and for a prior Offender (1-yr. NCAA suspension), then that means he is dismissed from GT’s FB Program based on MY rules.

“I can’t have players in my FB Program deceiving me & my coaches”.

CPJ isn’t handcuffed by the school, no AD or School Prez would force a HC to keep a deceiver on his Team.

If that’s what CPJ needs to do, I would support him in that. Since we are not there to know the entirety (is that a word?) of the situation, I cannot recommend a specific course of action. I trust CPJ will make the right decision for him and for the Yellow Jackets. However, I can certainly see this playing out the way you describe.

We all need to remember that R. Houston sued and GT was ordered by the courts to allow him back in school and on the team.
The real problem here is Nealy is the only returning ILB with real game experience. Guess Days is going to get to crack heads a little sooner

I don’t hate GT GTL, sometimes I hate the way GT does things.

I envision GT FB in the Atlanta Area being on the same level as USC FB is in the Southern California Area.

With a few key decisions , I feel GT could be that good, I’m sure we can come up with a Stanford-type run (back-to-back 12 win seasons) even if they can’t be the USCw of the South.
