Days could miss Tech spring game

Greetings

Some notes from post-practice interviews Wednesday.

1. Quarterback Synjyn Days may not play Friday night in the spring scrimmage. Days injured his left wrist on the final play of practice Wednesday. Days and fellow backup Vad Lee had been receiving most of the practice reps and were slated to get most of them in the scrimmage.

Coach Paul Johnson was not specific regarding how Days’ snaps will be allocated if he can’t play. It could be more for Tevin Washington or for early enrollee Dennis Andrews or walk-on transfer Tim Byerly, or all three, as well as walk-on Darryl Dickey.

“As far as the game goes, it’s not a concern as much as it is he’s made a lot of progress this spring,” Johnson said. “You’d like to see him have a chance to play.”

2. Guard Shaquille Mason may not play either with an undisclosed injury. It was hoped he would return for Wednesday’s practice, but he didn’t participate. That would leave the offensive line with 10 available bodies for Friday, including walk-ons. If someone gets hurt Friday, the likely option would be to flip-flop players from team to team.

3. Johnson on inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days: “I think he’s had a good camp, a good spring. I think he’s improved, I think he’s worked hard. He’s doing some good things.”

On the likelihood he’ll see playing time in the fall: “Oh, yeah, definitely. He’s going to have to. He’s going to play.”

4. Asked if any A-backs had made progress closing the gap with Robert Godhigh, who has been the top performing A-back in the spring with Orwin Smith out, Johnson said “I think Deon Hill’s done some good things.”

Johnson also mentioned Tony Zenon and B.J. Bostic but said there’s not a lot of separation.

5. Wide receiver Jeremy Moore has pushed his way into the first group, splitting reps with Jeff Greene and Chris Jackson.

“He’s probably been the most consistent, probably had the least amount of efforts and played hard,” Johnson said. “He’s made some catches. He’s done some good things, made some plays.”

Efforts are demerits for not giving full effort on a play.

“I think you’ve got Jeff and Darren (Waller) and Chris and Jeremy competing and we’ll see how it comes out,” Johnson said. “They’ve all got to learn to play harder.”

6. The most improved player on defense? Johnson said several players have improved and added that “(defensive end) Anthony Williams has caught my eye.”

7. Asked the same question, Washington said named outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy, nose tackle T.J. Barnes and also the secondary.

“I think those guys are a lot hungrier this year, more physical with our receivers,” he said. “Those guys come out and just compete every day, try to make plays on the ball, put the defense in a position where they feel like nobody can come out and throw on them.”

“Jeremiah, he’s always 100 miles an hour,” Washington said. “Sometimes you want to tell him to slow down. … He’s got a high motor. He’s always going.”

Washington said Barnes’ focus and attention to detail have improved.

“As far as with the defensive line, if they’ve got a stunt on, he’s making sure he’s in the right gap, making sure he’s doing his job, just trying to take a lot of personal responsibility for what he has to do.”

8. In case you weren’t aware, the spring game is Friday at 7:45 p.m. Free to the public. Parking information here.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have another post up later this morning.

Hope you all can make it out to the spring game Friday night.

re:
@ WnE, I guess it would depend on whether the player arrested is actually guilty. In this case, it MIGHT indicate a lack of judgment on CPJ’s part, but hardly a lack of ethics. After all, Drummond’s suspension last year would have been a lot easier for the team to absorb than one this coming year. Regardless, neither you nor I know all (in fact, probably none) of the FACTS.
________________

Fair enough!

But why does it seem that CMR easily comes clean pretty quickly when his SAs get into trouble, and when a GT SA gets into trouble the GTAA & CPJ seems to close ranks and cover up as much as possible?

CPJ has been a HC for too long and once was HC at a Service Academy, it is too late for you to try and claim that CPJ had a lapse in judgment, if CPJ did anything wrong then he KNEW what he was doing.

In this case it seems that he didn’t want to lose a starter last season, so CPJ milked the “system”, it might seem smart and cagey, but it brings embarrassment to GT’s FB program and to the Institute.

___________

Mr. Stein, we criticize and compare what we do at GT as being better than other Colleges, so when the shoe is on the other foot we should also compare our Program to the surrounding market to see if our standards are where they should be.

it could be any other College, but UGa happens to be close by and they have had issues before, so the comparisons come pretty easily.

The comparisons are irrelevant. UGA can – and does – do whatever they want. Whether Tech does likewise means nothing.

Focus on the issue.

FLJ,

If CPJ didn’t know, then Drummond (a repeat offender) hid the incident from the HC and deserves to get booted from GT’s FB Program.

Did you see how Chelsea defended them? It’s exactly how me and Paul in NH thought they should…stuff 10 defenders in their 1/4 of the field and take their chances downfield when they present themselves.

The best analogy I can draw to Barca’s offense is the old Princeton basketball philosophy. Possess the ball as long as possible, make the defense work by cutting and passing, don’t take any low-percentage shots.

George if it sounded like I was downplaying what Drummond did that was not my intention. The kid deserves to be punished.

WnE how do you know CPJ was covering up anything? Drummond was just starting last season so sitting him out the first game would have been no big deal.
I would like to know what kind of disclosure agreement these kids agree too. I would think any student athlete involved in any criminal activity would be obligated to let the HC know. Not sure on the circumstances or facts so I will hold my judgement for know.

Here’s something none of you has expressed. DD got in trouble with the law in July 2011. He hired an attorney to defend him in the charges of BUI. Then he told CPJ about the incident. CPJ took no action at the time much like Petrino’s boss at Arky did until all of the facts were “gathered”. DD’s lawyer got his case put off at least once of not more times. When the matter was finally adjudicated, then CPJ made his statement. Now he will likely confer with his boss and they will decide and announce the appropriate punishment for DD. Please explain to this poor dumb non lawyer the moral. ethical differences in DD’s case and Petrino’s case. Someone educate me, please.

WnE I agree with you about comparing what other programs do but you need to find a program with similar disciple problems. Gt may have 1% of thier players get in some kind of criminal trouble each year compared to UGA being closer to 10%. You also need to look at factors such as repeat offenders and of course charges involved. I agree I am not so sure a 1 game suspension is enough for this particular player and if he hide or lied about it then the penalties should be MUCH stiffer.

Between Cech’s saves, the clearing of that shot by Andy Cole that almost went in, and the shot in injury time that hit the post (and the rebound that was flubbed)…I was amazed that Barca didn’t score either. It would be the upset of the year if Chelsea went into the Nou Camp (Barcelona) and won the aggregate, but they have a goal to play with.

Paul…Chelsea should just take their 10 defenders and lineup directly on the technical area in front of the goal and for a wall. I was surprised they left Drogba in there even though he was beat up. In fact, pretty much the entire Chelsea team was beat up after that one.

BUI should be GS ….. think about it, when people are boating on the lake, how often are they doing it alone? And it’s usally with more people than really should be on the boat.

As far as booting him from the team, I’m kinda of a “three strikes and you’re out” guy. Unless one of the first 2 is serious enough to count as 2+ “strikes” DD didn’t harm anyone with his BUI (I’m not condoning what he did). Had he harmed someone then yeah, he should be done.

IMO, he should be watched like a hawk, and even covertly (to see what he does when nobody’s watching). And any misstep, even unexcusably missing a class, meeting, practice etc, he should be booted. Has has no wiggle room, and rightly doesn’t deserve any.

Sucks that Phil Smith (talent, experience) had to be booted, but the guy proved to be a f-up. DD is on his to PS, but he’s got a chance to straighten up. As a GT fan, I hope he does.
