Days could miss Tech spring game

Greetings

Some notes from post-practice interviews Wednesday.

1. Quarterback Synjyn Days may not play Friday night in the spring scrimmage. Days injured his left wrist on the final play of practice Wednesday. Days and fellow backup Vad Lee had been receiving most of the practice reps and were slated to get most of them in the scrimmage.

Coach Paul Johnson was not specific regarding how Days’ snaps will be allocated if he can’t play. It could be more for Tevin Washington or for early enrollee Dennis Andrews or walk-on transfer Tim Byerly, or all three, as well as walk-on Darryl Dickey.

“As far as the game goes, it’s not a concern as much as it is he’s made a lot of progress this spring,” Johnson said. “You’d like to see him have a chance to play.”

2. Guard Shaquille Mason may not play either with an undisclosed injury. It was hoped he would return for Wednesday’s practice, but he didn’t participate. That would leave the offensive line with 10 available bodies for Friday, including walk-ons. If someone gets hurt Friday, the likely option would be to flip-flop players from team to team.

3. Johnson on inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days: “I think he’s had a good camp, a good spring. I think he’s improved, I think he’s worked hard. He’s doing some good things.”

On the likelihood he’ll see playing time in the fall: “Oh, yeah, definitely. He’s going to have to. He’s going to play.”

4. Asked if any A-backs had made progress closing the gap with Robert Godhigh, who has been the top performing A-back in the spring with Orwin Smith out, Johnson said “I think Deon Hill’s done some good things.”

Johnson also mentioned Tony Zenon and B.J. Bostic but said there’s not a lot of separation.

5. Wide receiver Jeremy Moore has pushed his way into the first group, splitting reps with Jeff Greene and Chris Jackson.

“He’s probably been the most consistent, probably had the least amount of efforts and played hard,” Johnson said. “He’s made some catches. He’s done some good things, made some plays.”

Efforts are demerits for not giving full effort on a play.

“I think you’ve got Jeff and Darren (Waller) and Chris and Jeremy competing and we’ll see how it comes out,” Johnson said. “They’ve all got to learn to play harder.”

6. The most improved player on defense? Johnson said several players have improved and added that “(defensive end) Anthony Williams has caught my eye.”

7. Asked the same question, Washington said named outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy, nose tackle T.J. Barnes and also the secondary.

“I think those guys are a lot hungrier this year, more physical with our receivers,” he said. “Those guys come out and just compete every day, try to make plays on the ball, put the defense in a position where they feel like nobody can come out and throw on them.”

“Jeremiah, he’s always 100 miles an hour,” Washington said. “Sometimes you want to tell him to slow down. … He’s got a high motor. He’s always going.”

Washington said Barnes’ focus and attention to detail have improved.

“As far as with the defensive line, if they’ve got a stunt on, he’s making sure he’s in the right gap, making sure he’s doing his job, just trying to take a lot of personal responsibility for what he has to do.”

8. In case you weren’t aware, the spring game is Friday at 7:45 p.m. Free to the public. Parking information here.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have another post up later this morning.

Hope you all can make it out to the spring game Friday night.

@ dwagfag, that’s pretty sad when you have to go back 22 years to find something similar to what just happened in Athens last year…..maybe even this year.

to answer some questions-
Broderick Snoddy is coming along but has some catching up to do. the guys he’s competing with all have playing experience. Errin Joe has some work to catch up to Morgan Bailey, Tyler Kidney and Ray Beno at tackle. i confess i don’t have much to offer on Menocal or Harrell. My guess is both are likely special-teams guys.
i don’t think rosters have been posted. it’s first string offense and second string defense vs. first string defense and second string offense.
please take the name calling and mudslinging elsewhere, both sides. it’s childish and no one wants to hear it.

and for the record, I’m not coming down on the kid for his BUI. I’m well aware that college kids make mistakes. I made many at that age, and thank God they weren’t considered “news”. You guys should actually commend UGA’s beat writers for constantly providing you with timely “news” with which to rib us for…but if any fan base deserves apathetic “news” coverage, it has to be tech’s.

Why is GT’s spring game friday night?
Is there a reason for this.
I was just wondering.
Thanks.

There wouldn’t be this daily cycle of childish and boorish behavior if the UGA fans (the jackass ones, at least) would stay off the Tech blogs, and if the Tech fans (again, the jackass ones) would stay off the UGA blogs. I seldom read a UGA blog and never post on one; I don’t see why anybody would do anything differently. All they do (either fan base) is embarrass themselves and their school

I am sick of the whole “college kids” excuse. If these morons don’t know right from wrong by now then they should be kicked off the team for stupidity. Being in college shouldn’t be an excuse to break any law you feel like breaking.

Ed, it was set up that way just to try something different. Spring games are notoriously boring as hell, so the night factor, coupled with a proposed festival-type atmosphere is an experiment.

I have a young Clemson graduate friend who started off “at the bottom” at a Chiptole restaurant in Spartanburg. He is now in charge of OPENING a new one somewhere else in SC. The cream always rises to the top, and sometimes it happens pretty fast.

Dumbo…

Chick-fil-A corporate offices are located in Atlanta. There are several managerial and support functions that college grads can achieve at without being at the store…logistics, purchasing, marketing, real estate, legal, etc…

Chick-fil-A restaurants are franchised out to individual owners, anyway. Tough for recent college grads to muster the necessary cashflow to open their own Chick-fil-A store.

@ FLJ and George Stein—-I don’t disagree with what the two of you have said, but I am still somewhat undecided about it. If Drummond is another Glen Rice or Phil Smith, then cut him loose now, but IF keeping him in a supportive, encouraging, and DISCIPLINED environment will help him whereas dropping him might just send him to another school who will simply use him for his talents won’t do him any good as a person, then why not keep him and try to break through his thick skull. I definitely don’t think we should keep him (or anybody) for what HE might contribute to the team, but for what the SCHOOL might contribute to him. If he’s too much of a burden, then let him go; but if he can grow up and learn from his past, then keep him. I don’t know…….those are just thoughts running through my head. We definitely don’t need any more Glen Rice’s though.

George Stein

That’s why I said let him stay in school, SS. But this is not his first issue. I understand there’s a fine line between allowing people to make mistakes and helping correct them, but there is also some personal responsibility that must be learned.

Conducting a boat when you’re drunk isn’t funny or something “everyone does.” It’s dangerous, and he’s lucky he didn’t kill or injure himself or someone else.

@ George….sadly conducting a boat while drunk is far more prevalent than most people think. I guess those that do it don’t think it’s like driving a car while drunk. But I would be willing to bet that close to 50% of the boaters on Clarks Hill Lake, outside Augusta, are drunk every weekend while they are on the water. That’s not an excuse for Drummond, but I’m afraid that that kind of practice is all too common.

I think being drunk while on a boat is common, and I think that’s stupid, too. Boating under the influence may be something that is not unusual, but it’s not something everyone does. My friends and I all take turns being the one who conducts the boat if we go for a weekend. On Saturday, I’m going to 420 Fest and I’ll probably have a few too many, but it’s not my turn to drive.

To the extent Johnson has a say here (and he may not), he should remove Drummond from the team. The worst thing that could happen is other players seeing a minor suspension for a major offense, doing the same thing, and hurting themselves or someone else.

Will it be televised anywhere (like ESPN3.com or something)?

10% of the games would be the first 2 correct?

George Stein

April 19th, 2012
11:54 am

Even if that’s true, FLJ, it doesn’t rationalize Drummond’s behavior.

Look, I don’t care that he was drinking. The underage consumption doesn’t bother me at all. I’m furious that he was selfish enough to conduct a boat and endanger other people.

Supersize that order, mutt

April 19th, 2012

@ FLJ, for some reason, people don’t see boating while drinking the same as they see driving while drinking, and that is just wrong. Boating MIGHT not be as much of a risk to others outside the boat, like driving is to other drivers or pedestrians, but it is definitely as much of a risk to those in the boat as it is to others in a car.
