Days could miss Tech spring game

Greetings

Some notes from post-practice interviews Wednesday.

1. Quarterback Synjyn Days may not play Friday night in the spring scrimmage. Days injured his left wrist on the final play of practice Wednesday. Days and fellow backup Vad Lee had been receiving most of the practice reps and were slated to get most of them in the scrimmage.

Coach Paul Johnson was not specific regarding how Days’ snaps will be allocated if he can’t play. It could be more for Tevin Washington or for early enrollee Dennis Andrews or walk-on transfer Tim Byerly, or all three, as well as walk-on Darryl Dickey.

“As far as the game goes, it’s not a concern as much as it is he’s made a lot of progress this spring,” Johnson said. “You’d like to see him have a chance to play.”

2. Guard Shaquille Mason may not play either with an undisclosed injury. It was hoped he would return for Wednesday’s practice, but he didn’t participate. That would leave the offensive line with 10 available bodies for Friday, including walk-ons. If someone gets hurt Friday, the likely option would be to flip-flop players from team to team.

3. Johnson on inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days: “I think he’s had a good camp, a good spring. I think he’s improved, I think he’s worked hard. He’s doing some good things.”

On the likelihood he’ll see playing time in the fall: “Oh, yeah, definitely. He’s going to have to. He’s going to play.”

4. Asked if any A-backs had made progress closing the gap with Robert Godhigh, who has been the top performing A-back in the spring with Orwin Smith out, Johnson said “I think Deon Hill’s done some good things.”

Johnson also mentioned Tony Zenon and B.J. Bostic but said there’s not a lot of separation.

5. Wide receiver Jeremy Moore has pushed his way into the first group, splitting reps with Jeff Greene and Chris Jackson.

“He’s probably been the most consistent, probably had the least amount of efforts and played hard,” Johnson said. “He’s made some catches. He’s done some good things, made some plays.”

Efforts are demerits for not giving full effort on a play.

“I think you’ve got Jeff and Darren (Waller) and Chris and Jeremy competing and we’ll see how it comes out,” Johnson said. “They’ve all got to learn to play harder.”

6. The most improved player on defense? Johnson said several players have improved and added that “(defensive end) Anthony Williams has caught my eye.”

7. Asked the same question, Washington said named outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy, nose tackle T.J. Barnes and also the secondary.

“I think those guys are a lot hungrier this year, more physical with our receivers,” he said. “Those guys come out and just compete every day, try to make plays on the ball, put the defense in a position where they feel like nobody can come out and throw on them.”

“Jeremiah, he’s always 100 miles an hour,” Washington said. “Sometimes you want to tell him to slow down. … He’s got a high motor. He’s always going.”

Washington said Barnes’ focus and attention to detail have improved.

“As far as with the defensive line, if they’ve got a stunt on, he’s making sure he’s in the right gap, making sure he’s doing his job, just trying to take a lot of personal responsibility for what he has to do.”

8. In case you weren’t aware, the spring game is Friday at 7:45 p.m. Free to the public. Parking information here.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have another post up later this morning.

Hope you all can make it out to the spring game Friday night.

NOJACKET,
Three of the last four seasons under CPJ have been BETTER than 7-5, so I’m not sure what you are talking about. There will be a solid crowd of 15,000 at Tech for the game which is just fine with me.

It seems like you are trying to say that GT is the best team that gets little fan support from outside its school, and there I will agree with you. Part of that has to do with the media climate in this state, which perpetually pumps up UGA and minimalizes GT. This has an effect on the potential sidewalk fans who get most of their info on the respective schools from the media.

UOAD, Awesome, I knew it.

Also my neighbor had an Akita Chow mix. Then was huge and was I think 100 lbs.
One time it ran in the road and hit a Honda Civic, Dog got dazed and face beat up a bit, but you should have seen the dent in the car.

I own a dog, and frankly they need to stay at home. You pay extra for your Bark in the Park ticket because the BRaves need to be compensated for the extra space you take up and the increased cleaning required to avoid a health hazard.

Sorry…

That’s not even considering the liability issues that the venue exposes itself to because another dog, or person, is attacked or bitten. I’ve been to enough dog parks to realize that a significant portion of dog owners do not have a clue on how to socially acclimate their dogs.

Since 2004 Georgia is 3-5 vs Florida, the series is led by Georgia 48-40-2. tech is 1-7 vs Georgia.
The series with Florida historically has been one of long steaks by each team. What does Florida have to do with Tech?

Spring game was a blast.
Tech LB’s two deep are looking good
Tech DB’s two depp are looking good
Tech DL, Barnes looks pretty good, DE’s was hard to tell
WR not getting open much but Chris Jackson ran a great route for a TD pass from Vad Lee. Great pass also. Timing back shoulder was perfect, Aaron Rogers like.
3 Deep QB’s look pretty good. I think Vad’s going to be real good.

Stars Attoachu, Neally, Watts, J Hunt-Days and V Lee. Also L Young, J Thomas, Golden

Glad you and your son had fun. I met a nice young man on the MARTA train on the way home. We talked sports. I told him he REALLY needed to Hit the Books as hard as the Basketball Court. He pulled his hoodie up and hid his face. I told him I know it isn’t what he wanted to hear but it is the truth. A lady sitting 2 rows back on the train from dad and I tapped me on the shoulder. She smiled and said that he was not hiding from me. She said she was SO happy somebody that she or her son didn’t know just told him the SAME THING she has been Preaching to him.

UOAD, that was BTTF’s nephew, not his son, and he seemed like a really nice kid, as did BTTF. It was GREAT spending time with you, ole yeller, BTTF, 1 4 GT, and GT Lee. I look forward to more such encounters in the Fall. And I LOVED the way Vad Lee looked in the second half. He is definitely going to make a difference, as is a much improved defense. There were some monsters out there tonight

____________

BTTF:

I was there, just because I chose to stay to myself, that doesn’t mean I wasn’t there.

BTW, we’re in trouble next season.

DL issues, 2ndary inssues, WR issues, passing issues.

Vad won’t be nearly as effective when teams get to scout him after some PT and see that he is very likely to pass when he is in the game.

His effectiveness as a passer will be greatly reduced when DCs & Defense identify him as “GT’s only passing threat”.

Question:
If our LBs & safeties/DBs are so good then why were there A-Backs open all night?

Also our DL looked good because they were playing an “under-sized” Triple-OPtion OL from GT, will that under-sized DL look as good in the 3rd qtr. vs. 340lb Cordy Glenn-types?

Miami, UGA, and UNC will most likely have big OLs, maybe VT also, I’m not sure our small DL will do well vs. OLs that are not recruited to play Triple-OPtion FB.

Perkins can now officially be called a “bust” , if there’s any position that can make an immediate impact, it is RB, Perkins finished HS early and got an extra Spring that most Recruits don’t get and he still hasn’t shown that “it factor”.

That leaves Sims & Laskey as the B-Backs, that means no threat, that means a clogged, plodding Offense vs. good teams, and less chances for A-Backs to find room outside, the entire offense is set up off of the threat of the B-back, and we do NOT have a great one, we have a serviceable one.

GT fans always leave the spring game with too much optimism.

On the other hand, I am fair and realistic.

GTfan2012

WnE,
The reason I ask all this is because, I think you have no idea what really went on at the GT Spring game. 1. Due to injuries, we had only 10 OLs (including walk ons). Since both teams need 5, that leaves us pretty thin at that position. CPJ said a couple guys who played T all spring had to play G in this game. So if it looked like the QBs were struggling throwing the ball, perhaps it had something to do with the OL. 2. Are you serious about the A-back comment. That’s the whole point of sending an A-back out for a pass, you get a mis-match with a LB in coverage a lot of the time. DUH!!!! 3. So our “small” DL is going to have trouble, huh? Did you know that Miami and VT both have smaller DLs than we do? Look it up. Now, if you want to say small for a 3-4, then fine, but that’s not what you said.
