Days could miss Tech spring game

Greetings

Some notes from post-practice interviews Wednesday.

1. Quarterback Synjyn Days may not play Friday night in the spring scrimmage. Days injured his left wrist on the final play of practice Wednesday. Days and fellow backup Vad Lee had been receiving most of the practice reps and were slated to get most of them in the scrimmage.

Coach Paul Johnson was not specific regarding how Days’ snaps will be allocated if he can’t play. It could be more for Tevin Washington or for early enrollee Dennis Andrews or walk-on transfer Tim Byerly, or all three, as well as walk-on Darryl Dickey.

“As far as the game goes, it’s not a concern as much as it is he’s made a lot of progress this spring,” Johnson said. “You’d like to see him have a chance to play.”

2. Guard Shaquille Mason may not play either with an undisclosed injury. It was hoped he would return for Wednesday’s practice, but he didn’t participate. That would leave the offensive line with 10 available bodies for Friday, including walk-ons. If someone gets hurt Friday, the likely option would be to flip-flop players from team to team.

3. Johnson on inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days: “I think he’s had a good camp, a good spring. I think he’s improved, I think he’s worked hard. He’s doing some good things.”

On the likelihood he’ll see playing time in the fall: “Oh, yeah, definitely. He’s going to have to. He’s going to play.”

4. Asked if any A-backs had made progress closing the gap with Robert Godhigh, who has been the top performing A-back in the spring with Orwin Smith out, Johnson said “I think Deon Hill’s done some good things.”

Johnson also mentioned Tony Zenon and B.J. Bostic but said there’s not a lot of separation.

5. Wide receiver Jeremy Moore has pushed his way into the first group, splitting reps with Jeff Greene and Chris Jackson.

“He’s probably been the most consistent, probably had the least amount of efforts and played hard,” Johnson said. “He’s made some catches. He’s done some good things, made some plays.”

Efforts are demerits for not giving full effort on a play.

“I think you’ve got Jeff and Darren (Waller) and Chris and Jeremy competing and we’ll see how it comes out,” Johnson said. “They’ve all got to learn to play harder.”

6. The most improved player on defense? Johnson said several players have improved and added that “(defensive end) Anthony Williams has caught my eye.”

7. Asked the same question, Washington said named outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu, inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy, nose tackle T.J. Barnes and also the secondary.

“I think those guys are a lot hungrier this year, more physical with our receivers,” he said. “Those guys come out and just compete every day, try to make plays on the ball, put the defense in a position where they feel like nobody can come out and throw on them.”

“Jeremiah, he’s always 100 miles an hour,” Washington said. “Sometimes you want to tell him to slow down. … He’s got a high motor. He’s always going.”

Washington said Barnes’ focus and attention to detail have improved.

“As far as with the defensive line, if they’ve got a stunt on, he’s making sure he’s in the right gap, making sure he’s doing his job, just trying to take a lot of personal responsibility for what he has to do.”

8. In case you weren’t aware, the spring game is Friday at 7:45 p.m. Free to the public. Parking information here.

Thanks for reading. I’ll have another post up later this morning.

Hope you all can make it out to the spring game Friday night.

UOAD, my dad and I were never particularly close. I mean he was a good dad and a great provider; we just never were all that close. But we did spend one incredible day together that I will never forget. He went with me to the 1974 Tech – UGA game in Athens, when it poured down COLD WINDY rain the entire day. At half-time, I was miserable and knew that he was too, and Tech had built up an insurmountable lead, so I suggested that we just go ahead and head home. He would have none of it. He said he was enjoying it too much to leave. I was never so proud of him in my entire life. That is a day and an experience to treasure for a lifetime.

I just read your reply to my post about Real. I hope you didn’t take me seriously – I was being sarcastic about CR7. It should be a good replay in the Bernabeu next week – Real will be going for broke. I’ll be watching it in a bar in Stuttgart. I am sure all of the locals will be cheering on Real and not Bayern. One thing about the fans in Europe is that they don’t cheer for teams because they are from their leagues – the Real fans want Barca to lose, the VFB Stuttgart fans want Bayern to lose, everyone in England but Chelsea fans wants Chelsea to lose. It’s not like that SEC SEC nonsense.

I told you I pull for Fulham so you know I wasn’t rooting for Chelsea…I think I was more happy they defended Barca the way I thought they would. They’re getting killed at the Nou Camp…I’m guessing 3-0 or 3-1 with a lot of those close calls from the 1st leg going in.

I figure German fans can get behind a team with Sammy Khedira and Mesut Ozil instead of an all-Deutschland sounding name like Mario Gomez :)

3 strikes & you are OUT!

First strike: NCAA 1-year rip for unknown reasons, probably Steroids.

Second strike: Underage Drinking that led to a guilty plea for BUI (boating under the influence).

Third Strike: Hiding the Second strike above and not telling the HC or anyone on the GT staff about the incident that happened above way back in July 2011. Basically that’s LYING to your HC by omission.

Any leader worth his salt cannot tolerate liars & deceivers among their ranks, CPJ ’s lack of swift decisive punishment in this matter lets me know that he isn’t the “tough disciplinarian” that many GT fans think he is.

There’s a difference between swift and hasty. Drummond is not going to participate in tonight’s game and alot can happen between now and the start of fall practice. Having just found out about it Wednesday and it being the conclusion of Spring practice, I’m not sure what you expect. I trust CPJ will do the right thing, regardless of what action he takes.

On the other hand, it is well known that you do not like CPJ, so any action he takes will be criticized by you.

____________

In your opinion has Drummond been given 3 strikes?

IF you feel he has, then there’s no need for delay on CPJ ’s behalf.

Drummond lied by omission since last July 2011, a person like that deserves very little “delay” or “due process”.

It is not necessarily the crime, but the cover-up that I have the problem with.

3 strikes is fair, but when 1 of the strikes involves lies & deception, then you act swiftly to send a message to rest of the players.

CPJ once worked at USNA, where the Honor Code was something like; “A Midshipman will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor TOLERATE anyone who does”.

That’s part of the “reason” that CPJ was supposed to be such a good fit for GT, but now that he’s at GT, he’s acting like a “win-at-all-costs” SEC-type HC.

Kind of hard for GT fans to look down on all those so-called “factories” that we like to criticize so often.

________

FLJ:

I have no problem with GT players majoring in Econ or Business Admin., in fact it would be nice if GT would add a Broadcast Comm. major and maybe a Sociology Major also, I’m not one of those GT traditionalists that think that everyone needs to be an Engr.

Based on Ga. HS FB, GT should get better Recruits and the likely result will be more NFL players.

CPJ needs to be COMPLETE BCS-level HC in order for me to support him.

CPJ needs to be a better “face-of-the-program” type BCS HC, a better Recruiter, better with the Media, better at Hiring asst. Coaches, better at in-game strategy, better at FB fundamentals (GT teams under CPJ have not played good fundamental FB), better at having a passing Game, better at defense & STs.

As a BCS HC, CPJ leaves a LOT to be desired, the problem, is that many GT fans don’t really know enough about CFB to see everything that GT is missing from their HC.

When GT alums like me point out everything that CPJ is lacking, they make me out to be the villain and forget about the things that our HC needs to improve on.

CPJ seems to be an “old dog” that doesn’t want to learn new tricks, so I doubt that I’ll be supporting him anytime soon.

WnE will not name the coach he would prefer at Tech.
I’m waiting for him to name coach that doesn’t do all the ting he criticizes Coach Johnson for:
One that:
Has kicked every player off the team that make multiple mistakes
One that never moves an OL from tackle to guard or guard to tackle.
One that’s never lost a kid he’s recruiting to a rival school
One who system guarantees every position player a chance at NFL
One who will switch up his offense even when it consistently ranked as one of the best in the nation.
One who has perfect graduation rates
One who only signs players ranked by recruiting services and does not do their own evaluation.

No I had no fear when I was a GT student or of going downtown after I graduated for games, etc.

Downtown around GT seemed safer when they had the old Techwood housing Project still open.

I wonder why there’s so much crime in that Area now?

I theorize that the revitalization makes the area seems like a prime target for criminals, when I was a student criminals didn’t seem to target the 10th St/Home Park Area like they do now.

Maybe the students have more money & fancier cars, I have no idea why crime is so bad down there now.
