A-back rotation continues

Greetings

A few notes from Wednesday and Monday.

1. B-back Charles Perkins didn’t take any reps at A-back Wednesday, as he had Monday. Quarterback Synjyn Days took few, if any. B-back David Sims took some turns at A-back, though. Coach Paul Johnson said the cross-training is standard procedure and “wasn’t a big deal.”

“It’s something we’ve done everywhere,” Johnson said. “It’s like when I was at Hawaii – we had one year all four of our skill guys were quarterbacks, both slots and both receivers. Actually, it was five, because we had five quarterbacks playing at one time.”

2. Johnson on the receivers: “They’re working hard. Jeff Greene actually got hurt a little bit earlier. Nothing serious, but he missed most of practice. Darren Waller had a couple nice plays. Jeremy Moore (did, as well). Chris Jackson made a nice catch or two. They did O.K.”

It’s likely one or more of the incoming receivers will play as a true freshman, as he typically plays five or six receivers, and there’s only four scholarship receivers in spring practice. Possibilities are Travin Henry from Cook High, Micheal Summers from Statesboro High and Anthony Autry from Norcross High.

3. One priority for the offense this spring is to drill down on the core plays, to make sure players truly understand their assignments and can execute them against a variety of defensive looks.

Said quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon, “It sounds maybe a little simplistic, but it’s pretty in-depth and, as the scrimmage goes on, they get tired and that’s when things start happening, so that’s been our focus, trying to get our guys on offense better at those things.”

Bohannon said that the decision to emphasize honing the core plays came from review of the five losses from 2011.

“[P]robably three of those, if we were just a little more fundamentally sound at going to the right person and doing the right thing, it would have given us a pretty good opportunity to win the game,” Bohannon said.

He didn’t name them, but I’m going to guess Virginia, Virginia Tech and Utah.

Center Jay Finch has noticed the prioritization.

“There’s a heavy focus on base plays, because if you can’t run the base plays, you’re not going to be able to run the counterpart,” he said. “If you can’t run the triple-option, you’re not going to be able to run anything.”

4. Saturday’s scrimmage will be open. It begins at 9:15 a.m. at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Enter through Callaway Plaza.

Thanks for reading.

Tevin (or the starting QB) and the A-Back should carry out the option motion at full speed even when the ball is handed off to Sims (or any of the B-Backs) rather than looking back at the hole.

FL Jacket…it’s about keeping the LB’s and the secondary honest. A greater passing threat will do the same thing for the secondary as well. It can also negate a read blitz. Effective fakes can pause a defensive player long enough to break a long run or pass.

In all fairness Ken, its hard for Georgia Tech to compete with “football factories” like Virginia and Utah with Tech’s stringent academic requirements. Virginia and Utah are recruiting 5 star illiterates while Tech is recruiting future rocket scientists and CEOs. You gotta put those two in the Moral Victory column for sure.

dwagfan, since you either didn’t see or chose not to comment on my response to you on the other blog earlier today concerning “flagship universities,” I will post it again now. I found this online. If this doesn’t prove who is being pretentious here, nothing will.

According to Robert M. Berdahl, interim President of the University of Oregon, the phrase “flagship” came into existence in the 1950s when the Morrill Act schools were joined by newer institutions built in a wave of post-war expansion of state university system. Berdahl contends that because of their age, the flagship institutions of a university system are often the largest and best financed and are perceived as elite relative to non-flagship state schools. He comments that “Those of us in “systems” of higher education are frequently actively discouraged from using the term “flagship” to refer to our campuses because it is seen as hurtful to the self-esteem of colleagues at other institutions in our systems. The use of the term is seen by some as elitist and boastful. It is viewed by many, in the context of the politics of higher education, as ‘politically incorrect.’ … Only in the safe company of alumni is one permitted to use the term.

UGA may be the largest “university” in the state, and possibly receive the most STATE FUNDING, but Tech is one of the most highly endowed “universities” in the world. So it would seem to me that UGA fans calling UGA the “flagship university of the state of Georgia” are ELITIST, BOASTFUL, and “POLITICALLY INCORRECT”

As to the “International wrecking crew”, I hope to see Gotsis get some reps this season. From what I’ve heard/seen he is ready to contribute NOW. And we need all of the help we can get on the DL. Kallon would probably benefit greatly from redshirting a year, just due to the newness of the game to him. But he definitely already has the physical tools to be an impact player on the Defense. I’ve been telling folks, our D will hopefully be better this coming season, but for 2013 I expect GT to have an EXCELLENT defense to compliment the already very effective offense.

I just watched the link GT Lee provided. Chungong was some kind of hs player, no question about it. I thought`he might have been some unknown Chinese player like the new Chinese basketball guard who played at Harvard and then became the current NBA star. I forgot his name, but he’s the new Pete Maravich. No, Chungong has a deceptive oriental name for a black player. He must be adopted I guess. Anyway, maybe he can become another Philipe Claybrooks or Marco Coleman who were really good at Tech playing DE.
