Perkins, Days take reps at A-back

Greetings-

A couple notes from Georgia Tech spring practice

1. B-back Charles Perkins and quarterback Synjyn Days took reps at A-back in practice Monday. Perkins has done it previously; it was Days’ first time there. It’s not a permanent move.

“It’s just a question of, when it’s all said and done, we want to try to get our best 11 players on the field,” coach Paul Johnson said.

It’s hard to say what it means, exactly. Quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon noted that B-backs David Sims and Zach Laskey have had practice time at A-back, also. As an example, he said that sometimes he’ll work separately with the quarterbacks and let the B-backs go work with the A-backs under the supervision of assistant coach Lamar Owens.

“It’s a cross-train, so those guys can learn a little bit about both positions,” he said. “We’ll see how it unfolds.”

Both did fine, according to Johnson. He brought up the matter in response to a question about A-backs, first noting that Robert Godhigh, because of his knowledge of the assignments and ability to execute them, is still leading this spring.

Deon Hill did O.K. Saturday, B.J. Bostic made some plays. Tony Zenon’s still working at it,” he said. “Those are probably the four right now, and then you get Orwin (Smith) back, and we were running some other guys in there. I put Charles in there today some at A-back. I put Synjyn in there at A-back. We had all kinds of guys in there running, so we’ll see how it goes.”

2. Guard Will Jackson is still out with a high ankle sprain. Defensive back Demond Smith returned from an unspecified injury Monday. Cornerback Louis Young is expected to return Wednesday. Tackle Morgan Bailey suffered an injury Monday.

3. Johnson said that Hill and wide receiver Jeremy Moore graded out well from the scrimmage.

“Defensively, I don’t remember anybody being really good,” he said.

Johnson and defensive coordinator Al Groh were critical of the tackling after the scrimmage, an opinion Johnson maintained after watching the video. “It’s bad,” he said.

4. No changes on the depth chart. It sounded like there won’t be any official changes until a new depth chart is released after spring practice ends.

5. Quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon’s evaluation of Days and Vad Lee from the scrimmage: “They did some good things and then they did some things that weren’t so good. … If they can just eliminate the negative plays, the plays that are going to get you beat, (we’ll be in good shape), because they do some really good things and make some really good plays. It’s just eliminating some of the silly stuff.”

Bohannon said that both have been making progress, and that he doesn’t “know how much it’s going to sort out in the spring, anyway. I think they’re both getting better, and that’s encouraging.”

Bohannon observed that Lee has been “starting to click a little better,” particularly since last Friday.

“Today, he actually got the option read right a few times, which he’s been struggling with,” he said. “But he just seems a little more comfortable even throwing the ball.”

Thanks for reading. I’ll have a post up on Wednesday morning from an interview with Sims about running harder into the hole.

Days has to be on the field and A or B might be the eventual place. Lee will be the starting quarterback sooner rather than later and I think the Tech coaches know it. Tevin Washington is solid and we are fortunate to have had him at Tech the last few years and fortunate to have him again this year. He is gutsy and provides strong leadership, but Lee is by far is the best quarterback to play at Tech since Joe Hamilton…Spring Practice or no Spring Practice.

What a bunch of wusses!

Earlier this week I identified a possible weakness in our A-Back depth chart, and then I was told that I was being my old crazy self, and then lo & behold just a few days later our Genius HC moves other players to A-Back to start crossing training and then makes the comment that “you need to get your best 11 players on the field”.

Obvious either I was right all along or CPJ seeks out my advice before he makes roster moves.

Instead of you putzes coming clean and admitting, “yeah Wrecks even a broken clock is right twice a day” (a back-handed way to admit someone you don’t like is correct) .

Instead of you guys doing that and showing at least a smidgen of manhood, you guys do the most feminine thing possible and keep bringing up “old sh**”.

For you guys that don’t know this, that is one of the things that WOMEN do to get on a MAN’S last nerve, to keep bringing tired, out-dated crap crap that has been discussed ad nauseum.

Not too MANLY there HT to keep dwelling on old sh** like a nagging a** WOMAN.

BTW, I was right about the A-Backs, me & CPJ; “Great FB Minds” that think alike, now if he would just recruit some TEs & FBs and get rid of this gimmicky-a** Triple-OPtion Offense!

Haven’t you guys noticed a kindler, gentler, WnE, no KFP, B-L-Ts, no SL in the OPtion Offense.

I’m a new man!

BTW, Arky’s is crazy as heck!

11-win seasons don’t come often in Arkansas especially with that State’s small population and mediocre HS Talent base.

If people start getting fired for having affairs, then roughly 50% of the working population is in line to get terminated since the divorce rate is 50% and the main reason is infidelity.

He had a wreck on on his DAY OFF, why should he even have to disclose to the University who else was involved in the accident?

Would any of us allow our employer to ask us details of a traffic accident that occurred on off time and didn’t involve a Company Car?

Much ado about NOTHING, the man is a CFB HC, not a guidance counselor for HS students.

None of the Moralists will be forgiving to the AD when their FB program is back to 5-7 win seasons or WORSE.

I hate Petrino, but he didn’t deserve to get canned.

Just in case you ventured on this blog for the first time today, WnE claims to be a GT grad (and he claims to have a class ring to prove it), but he shills for UGA and denigrates GT, its fans, its coaches, AND ITS PLAYERS at every turn. He’s been outed as a UGA fan numerous times, including the time he knew exactly how many bench presses Orson Charles had at his pro day and claimed that Orson Charles was sure to improve his slow 40 time (why would a GT fan would know or care about Orson Charles).

He really got fired for hiring a woman he was having a relationship with.

Ask yourself this: if Arkansas decided to let him remain head coach, do you think his wife would let him keep working there? The answer is no, which means they would have to terminate the subordinate. The potential liability in that case would be tremendous.

He should have simply told his boss that the police report will come out in a few days and is public information.

Bosses don’t have a right to ask any question at any time.

Petrino answering the question is the mistake he made.

How many people in America would be fired if their bosses came in on Monday mornings and asked about traffic accidents or DUIs that occurred over the weekend?

Dawg48, he didn’t get fired for lying to his boss either. He got fired for having an affair and hiring the woman with whom he was having the affair, on the state’s budget. That’s like going to a cathouse with the state’s money. Yeah, I’m pretty sure you get fired for that.

WnE, they do have a right to ask any question at any time when your public persona is part of the job. It’s a CEO clause that states you can be fired at any time for any behavior that is unbecoming to the employer. Trust me, when you make over a million a year, the rules are different.

I am sure part of the reasoning behind firing him was for projecting a bad image of the university. After all, as head football coach, he is a PUBLIC FIGURE, and his actions, good or bad, reflect on the university. In answer to WnE’s objection, I am sure any boss in the country would fire an employee whose actions projected an undesirable image for the company.

George Stein

April 10th, 2012

That might have been part of it, Supersize, but it was minimal. If he was just having an affair, he’s still the coach today. This was a decision designed to mitigate risk of liability.

Perhaps they didn’t have “a right” to ask about what the relationship was between Petrino and the woman, but they DID have a right to ask why he tried to cover up the details of the accident. Even if the university had not asked that question, law enforcement official would have, and perhaps did.
