More on Georgia Tech’s quarterback competition

Greetings-

Some quotes and observations that didn’t make the story about Synjyn Days and Vad Lee challenging Tevin Washington.

1. Like just about any coach, quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon loves having competition.

“Competition makes every one of them better regardless of who ends up being the guy. There’s no doubt. It’s the best thing you’ve got as a coach if you have competition. It’s hard when you don’t, unless you have a really intrinsically motivated starter.”

2. I alluded to it, but it sounds like the primary objective in spring practice will be to separate Lee and Days more than either of them against Washington. Obviously, if either of them blows it out of the water, that would have bearing on Washington’s status, but I’d think he has such a lead on both that it’s not likely in the spring.

3. Bohannon on familiarity with the offense being Lee’s challenge: “There isn’t any doubt. The more you do it, the better you’re going to be. He is a student of the game, to say the least, and he really works at it. So even when we talked about him back in fall camp, he was ahead of the curve. He does a good job of studying the game and learning everything he can.”

4. Days said he thought his right-wrist injury was pulled ligaments, but that “everything’s good now at this point.”

5. Days on the competition: “I feel like whoever’s the better man for it should start. Not accounting for if they’re a senior or if they’re a freshman or whatnot. The best person should get the job.”

6. Days came within 20 pounds of Joshua Nesbitt’s bench-press record for quarterbacks (385 pounds) about a month ago and wants to try to break it in the summer. He said he has been “busting his tail” in the weight room, the goal being to become a better ballcarrier and put more zip on his passes.

7. Wide receiver Darren Waller’s observations on Washington, Days and Lee, plus bonus information on early enrollee Dennis Andrews and Tim Byerly, a walk-on transfer from Middle Tennessee State (a smart wide receiver praises as many quarterbacks as he can): “They bring a lot to the table. Like Tevin, he’s a run-pass kind of guy. He’s a real good leader. Synjyn is probably the best athlete of all of them, strength-wise, speed-wise. We’ve just got to get him coming along. He’s been progressing well. Vad is a real good thrower, coming out of high school (in a) spread system, things like that. Then you’ve got Dennis coming in. He’s promising. He’s an athletic guy, strong. He’s working with us. He’ll be out there on the field doing extra stuff with us, things like that. Timmy Byerly transferred in from Middle Tennessee. I saw him play in high school, saw him play in a state championship. He’s a real good player. We’ve got a lot of guys.”

Thanks for reading. Post-practice notes will be posted later in the evening and I’ll have another blog up Thursday morning.

I think Vad will emerge as the eventually heir apparent to Washington. Days could end up at A, or B back down the road. Will be interesting to see how Andrews fits in later. Bring on VT!!

This is extremely promising at the QB position. The wild card could end up being Justin Thomas this fall.

That being said, I think Vad Lee and Justin Thomas will make a lot of guys change positions over the next 3-4 years…

I doubt you ever see Days at the B-Back position, given his propensity to put the ball on the ground…..too many opportunities for fumbles….even though he would probably be otherwise well-suited for the position, especially looking at how much stronger he has gotten.

Stating the obvious, this is a good problem to have….we just need the OL to come together a little better, particularly with pass-blocking. I think that is probably the biggest reason we haven’t seen more passing….half the time we drop back, the QB ends up running for his life – it seems like, at least.

What are we going to do with all of these QBs? Last year the passing game was improved but not close to being a threat. It has to improve along with the defense. The “D’s” motto this year ought to be “Three and out”

Agreed ATW. If Days can learn to hold on to the ball…which I think he would if given more opportunities to carry…he needs to be on the field in some way whether it be A-back or B-back. He runs hard and seems to have good vision.

I think all of us Jacket fans are excited by the prospect of having a QB that can really throw the ball and manage the offense as well as TW does.

All the triple option plays that we run, only give us the option of running on ONE half of the field because the dive is up the middle and then the QB and A-Back run to one side of the field that has been determined pre-snap.

We do run counter plays, but this play does NOT give us the option after the snap to run the play on either side of the field.

Just trying to give suggestions with the Oregon tape, but I don’t remember seeing anything out of our playbook in the past 2 or 3 years that give the triple option to either edge of the field like Oregon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvM2KDn5yCo&feature=g-vrec&context=G24fb193RVAAAAAAAAAg

Having the OPTION to take either the left edge of the field or the right edge of the field would spread the defense opening HUGE running lanes!

Everyone posts what they think Vad and Justin will do… We really have no clue what either will do. The coaches STILL have Washington as the starter, so obviously Vad is not superman. I know that we have a whole spring to see what happens and I know that Vad has only been in college one year… but the fact that coaches are not saying Vad is pushing Washington’s role says a lot at this point. I hope Vad continues to develop and makes it hard for coaches to keep him off the field because he obviously is talented, but people, we have never seen him really play so don’t make statements like “well I think Vad will do this” or “Vad will take Washington’s role by the end of the season”. None of us really know and the coaches probably do not truly know because the players have not even thrown the pads on yet.

Too bad Tevin hasn’t taken to the weight room the past four years like Days has in two. There have been many times that Tevin left yards on the field because he couldn’t break the first tackler like Nesbitt would. Days is a tremendous runner, hopefully his added strength includes a tighter grip on the ball…

Ken,
Has Vad been lifting weights as much as he appears to have been studying the playbook? When does the roster get updated for everyone’s weight/height? What time is the scrimmage Saturday morning and is it open like all the Saturdays last spring?

Interesting report on a plethora of QBs. Some of them will end up at other positions. Anybody think Synjyn can play B-Back?

Don’t believe that weight lifting improves a QB’s passing accuracy. Look at Tebow – he’s buff as hell but very inaccurate.

GT Rich – I’ve been meaning to ask. i’m not sure if they’re actually scrimmaging Saturday, so i don’t know if it will be open, and i don’t know for certain that any of the scrimmages will be open, although that has been the way it’s been done. i’ll find out.
and i don’t know what Lee’s weight room work is like. but i feel pretty comfortable saying i’m sure he’s been in there doing his work.
i don’t know about the height/weight changes, but i’d think the roster will be changed at some point in the spring. i think uniform changes and seniors not coming back (like b.j. machen and others) have to be sorted out.

GTJoe,
I think you have a short memory. Tevin put the ball on the ground early in his career, too. I am confident that Synjyn has fixed his ball security issues. He may be our starting QB before its all said and done, and even if he isn’t, he may serve us well at another position. If Synjyn moves, Safety is the best bet. He worked some with the secondary during his RS year and went to secondary position meetings as recently as last spring.

The thing about Tevin that has impressed me is his durability. I can’t think of a time when he came out of the game since the VT game (other than getting yanked against Miami). That has a lot of value.

I’d also say in his Vad’s defense that it’s difficult for a 19 year old to be better than a 23 year old. The bigger issue this season is getting the B-back going again.

Question – if Vad turns out to be the better passer, why not designate him as such and play him in those situations? If you have to pass, the other team knows it. At least put somebody in that can do it. They would still have to be somewhat concerned with the run.

Tevin won 8 games last year, he will start against VT. With his experience and any improvement, esp. passing, we should hope for more wins, given that the overall team steps it up, however the schedule is tougher.

Days is an athlete and has developed where he could help a lot at another position, but is capable of being that 3rd or 4th qb, if needed. He’s a tough competitor, so he may surprise. I want to see his Brother really do something at LB, he’s a stud as well.

I see this as a Tevin vs Vad thing. Tevin is solid as leading the option, but I like the comment above putting Vad in obvious passing situations, even earlier in a game in 3rd and very long. As Vad develops his option skills, he may have a chance to overtake Tevin, but he still needs to play some downs to see what he can do.

Tevin needs a signature win and VT on Labor Day is the perfect opportunity. Last year, his shining moment was the late drive against UNC. The Clemson win also was a great night but no real heroics involved. The UVA game sticks in my craw as does the collapse against Utah. He’s had a few more “almosts” but has yet to get over the top. I hope his senior year gives him the confidence to finally get it done.

Great comments. I’m glad we have more depth now at QB. I think Thomas will surely be redshirted which will provide more depth in following years. Concur that we need to improve the passing game to add much needed balance and Lee should be able to do that if not this year then next, but I’m concerned about our very junior and untested wide receives—hopefully, they will be able to get it done for us.

Well, GTBob, I’ve never seen Vad Lee play, so it’s difficult to determine what he does well and what he does poorly.

Tevin, to me, does a solid – but not exceptional – job of managing the offense and making enough good reads. Also, when he cuts it loose instead of trying to guide the ball, he seems to be a half decent passer, too.

GTfan2012

The Nebraska clip was interesting in one sense. I don’t know if it was cherry-picked that way but every pass was thrown on a rope. There was no putting air under the ball like we have done. I’d definitely like to see more of that. If Tevin could throw a pass like that, there are at least three or four of his INTs from last year that could have been completions. It will be interesting to see if Vad can do that.

If Tevin is the starter, I would like to see him carry out his fakes better. If you’ll notice, when he hands the ball off to the B-back when running the triple option, he usually looks back at the dive. He needs to run to the edge at full speed with the A-back like he still has the ball. That may spring the B-back for some extra yards.

I don’t necessarily want TW to start, but let’s be realistic…..do you really want a kid with absolutely no game-day experience (in Vad’s case) to start against VT in the opener, or even one with limited game-day experience (in Synjyn’s case)? I don’t think TW will be the starter by mid-season, but if he is, then I think it will be because he has earned it. I DO look for him to start the VT game, but I think the Presbyterian game will be the game where the ultimate starter will probably be decided, since that one at least should be easy enough for all 3 kids to get in the game and show what they can do.

Tevin did NOT play well against the ACC last year, it is as simple as that. He may come in to spring as the starter but Tech will be in big trouble if he is the starter. Look at the stats on ACC.com.

http://www.theacc.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2011-2012/confonly.html

Most of us hoping for Vad or days are hoping because we are not at all sold on Tevin and we are hoping one of those two will be the answer.

One of the most interesting things in the statistics AMG just posted is that we only lost seven fumbles last year despite running the ball significantly more than anyone else in the league. I don’t care who the QB is, just pass the ball more—short high % passes to stationary targets–e.g. curl routes by A-backs. Heck, put Days at A-back and have him take the pitch and either run or pass. Have Sims (ex-QB), Days and Tevin lateral the ball around for a while and then one of them throw the ball downfield. We don’t have a Dwyer or Allen, we don’t have a Nesbitt, we’ve even lost Roddy Jones and only have O. Smith so we better throw the ball and complete above 60% or it’s going to be a long season.

I would like to see one or more of the lower depth chart QBs get some time at A-back. Quick pitch and the wideout fakes a block on the corner as goes on by. Safety has to come up for run support. Big play opportunity. Also the experience of being on the field would have a benefit for future years.

And in all fairness to Tevin, the B-Back should hit the hole like a scalded dog whether he has the ball or not on the triple option. Sims does a good job of this, I think. He is a determined runner. this offense will lead in rushing yards per game but also fumbles per game. live by the sword die by the sword. i would hate it if my team ran it though as it hurts recruiting good div 1aa players , and its sucks if your defense gives up a ton of points early as the chances of making any kind of comback is very slim against the top defenses tech would have to beat in order to win any kind of championship.

UNC, NCST, Clemson, and VT games TW played better than good. GT was 3-1 in those games, and were it not for “the penalty”, would’ve been 4-0. UVA was good enough to win. That L goes to the D. Miami was a bad game for TW …………and special teams.

Yes, I think there are much better athletes at the QB spot on GT’s roster and think they’d be better for the job, but TW’s the incumbent. And like in boxing, the challenger(s) has to KNOCK OUT the champ or he loses.

IMO … Justin Thomas will be by far the fastest of the QBs. He appears to have “game changing” speed.

It seems like all the talk is about Vad, TW, and Synjyn. But let’s not forget about Justin Thomas. Being the number 19 all purpose athlete and recruited by Alabama says a lot about his talent. I understand that it takes time to learn the triple option and all the players but if this guy is as good as they say he is… I’d rather him start and get his experience in early. Plus, I heard him clocked 4.2 unofficial time on scout.com, if he can move like Vick and throw the ball too then we’re sitting pretty good.
