Calvin Johnson vying for Madden 13 cover

Former Georgia Tech star Calvin Johnson is one of 16 NFL players still alive in a contest to be on the cover of the Madden NFL 13 video game. But is the smart play for Megatron fans to vote against the Detroit Lions wide receiver?

As it did last year, EA Sports is allowing fans to select the player to appear on the cover. One player from each team was eligible, and in the first round Johnson’s margin of victory over Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was one of the largest of the 16 contests. The honor, however, comes with some a jinx worthy of the Brady Bunch tiki necklace.

Last year, running back Peyton Hillis, then with Cleveland, won the cover. He went from 1,177 rushing yards in 2010 to 587 in 2011 and missed six games.

In 2009, Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu sprained a knee ligament. The year before that, Brett Favre came out of retirement and fell on his face with the New York Jets. Michael Vick was on the cover in 2003, the year he broke his leg. That’s just the start.

It’s some seriously toxic juju, and that doesn’t even take into consideration the fact that the game has the No. 13 in its name. I’m halfway surprised that Sean Payton isn’t already on it. If you still want to vote for Johnson in his second-round match with Houston running back Arian Foster – or, perhaps, if you want to vote for Foster – you can do so here.

Not that Calvin needs any more coin, but what is the pay to be on the Madden cover?

The jinx talk is foolishness.

Vote for Foster! Calvin Johnson already served 3 years in purgatory with Reggie Ball. No need to extend that w/ a Madden cover.

Cash in while you can. I hope Calvin is getting good advice. I read somewhere that 65% of pro football players are broke within 5 years after they retire. I have not verified that statistic.

…at it again, with two more defensive starters suspended for “breaking team rules”…at the rate they are going they will be playing all backups for the first 2-4 games…

Dang Bullpups… Please tell me how the DWAGS having 2 more players suspended has any relevance to Calvin Johnson possibly getting the cover of Madden 13?

…not much comment was happening on the topic at hand so I thought I would add something that you guys like to smear – but, no one seems to care about that either, except for GTBob, and Burdell, and Geroge Stein and many others on the Chip Towers blog that like to comment and bash all things UGA…
