Burnett’s career appears over

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson did not close the door completely on linebacker Julian Burnett’s playing career. But Burnett’s neck injury, suffered in the Sun Bowl Dec. 31, appears to have ended his career.

“Well, you need to get that statement from Julian,” Johnson said Monday, following Tech’s first spring practice. “If he’s not out here, he’s probably not going to play.”

Burnett will be placed on medical scholarship, meaning he is ineligible to play in the coming season.

“He’s a heck of a competitor and a good football player, but there’s bigger things in life than football,” Johnson said. “You’ve got to be safe.”

Burnett led the Yellow Jackets in tackles for the past two seasons, despite starting only eight games in 2010. He was named to the All-ACC second team last season after finishing fifth in the regular season in tackles.

Johnson said Burnett will remain involved with the team in some fashion.

“He’s disappointed,” Johnson said. “Like anything, you want him to play, but I think he can look at the big picture, and the team doctors and everybody sat down and talked to him and explained the situation and I think he understands.”

JB,
I hate to hear your football playing days are over. You were one of the most exciting players I’ve seen on the flats in my 48 years. You have a motor that’s always running full tilt wide freaking open. A real joy to watch and everyone that saw you play could see the heart and soul you poured into every second spent on the field. I would wish you good luck but it’s obvious to all that with you luck had nothing to do with it. You will be a success in anything you set your mind to. Find a second passion that doesn’t place your health at risk and go full tilt! Hate that you won’t play again. Look forward to seeing you on the side lines keeping the players focused on the business at hand.

His loss will not be missed at all. He was not productive for Tech against VT’s giant QB Logan Thomas last season. He was no significant impetus within Al Groh’s D. Lucious Sanford was better than him. When I was at Tech we had a very good LB corps consisting of Bill Flowers, Stan Beavers and Dave Beavin, with Coach Carson and Maxie Baughn as D coaches, Carson as a fomer D player. We stopped opposing teams better than Groh’s D’s back in 71-72. Look a how VT’s QB ran right up the middle last year in BD. Where was Julian?

To Ten of eleven and Dry dirt road -

You are too young and immature to understand the significance of what’s going on here. To you – it’s all about the wins (for UGA) and losses (for Tech) – or the negative aspects of how an individual played a single game – nothing else matters. This is the supreme and all encompassing thought for you and many others like you when it comes what the history books will show when adding up the total wins and losses to date as well as those games against each other. Nothing else matters – No where will it be recorded that Julian Burnett’s football career and future opportunities on the gridiron were cut short by an unfortunate neck injury while playing in a post season game in 2011. The notation will be that Tech lost the game to Utah in over time and was left looking toward the following year after losing yet another post season game. But you see – the real story isn’t about the game or who won – it’s about an individual who gave his best on every play for the few seasons he played for Tech. It’s about the heart of a young man whose life was forever changed in an instant during that game. It’s about difficult decisions that he had to be make to leave the game he loved in order to protect his life and health for a future that now would not include football. It’s about once leading the defensive team by example and playing the game for the love of it rather than being able to notch victorys on the locker room wall as fans like do in blogs. And it’s about showing sportsmanship by leaving the bravado and boasting behind while playing the game as it was intended – preparing through hard work and dedication and then showcasing his talents on the field for his pleasure as well as those of us who watched and admired his efforts.

Maybe, as you grow up in the years to come – you’ll come to understand and appreciate these points – and come to see that there really are things more important that happen on the football field that transend the final score – that ultimately mean more to mature fans than how many games UGA has won over Tech – or how the player did on a particularly difficult day for most players on the team when we met Va Tech.

Sure – wins are great and allow us to feel proud – but when it comes to a persons heart and having fans witness first hand the effort and desire he played with while wearing the Tech uniform – scores become very insignificant – and certainly out of place when offering words of condolence and reassurance.

From what I was reading up on deism so far you can put it into any religion. The circular motions of life. Thomas Jefferson said all nations start out the same. They start out in bondage, then bondage to a great spiritual awakening, spiritual awakening to freedom, freedom to complacent, complacent apathy and apathy back to bondage.
You can defenatly see that going on now.

If you raise the taxes on the rich they raise the price of there goods. That causes me to pay more money at the stores. If you lower the taxes on the rich that causes me to pay more taxes in. Just because I don’t take the popular position to hate all things government, or all things Liberal, or all things ANYTHING…doesn’t mean I haven’t thought some of these things through. The current mess we’re in was the result of lots of unscrupulous people…US (you and I). People who over leveraged themselves on 5 or 6 homes trying to flip a profit. People too poor to even think of buying a house. Mortgage brokers who looked the other way the whole time…and greedy derivatives traders who invented devious ways of passing the risk onto the consumer.

This is why there haven’t been jobs. It isn’t taxes, it isn’t spending. The economy hasn’t grown until recently. Lower taxes don’t create jobs because business owners are motivated by profits…and therefore incentivize themselves toaximize productivity.

Long story short…less taxes don’t create jobs…more demand for goods and services does. Until the lenders decide that the risks are still not profitable…there’s nothing to spur demand.

FLJ—the Fair Tax eliminates all federal deductions from paychecks. Everyone would pay a federal sales tax of around 20%. All the taxes added to the products we buy would go away, lowering prices. Do a little research on the fair tax. It would be a tremendous economic boon to the USA. EVERYONE would pay the sales tax. Eventually state taxes would go away and they would adopt their own fair tax of around 10%. Overall tax rate on consumption, not income, would ensure that we all paid our fair share based on consumption. Each household would get a monthly rebate based on number of people in each household, on groceries, based on an average of what a family of four (example) paid on the average price of groceries in different areas of the country. Best tax plan, IMHO, I’ve see.

Consumption is not proportionate. A guy making $500K doesn’t consume 10X the goods that a guy making $50K does. Therefore, it puts even more tax burden on middle and lower classes. What’s more fair is a Flat tax w/o the litany of tax-deductible items or redundantly taxed items (like investment income).

As I’ve said…tax philosophy has little or nothing to do with job creation.

We all know UGA would go down the drain this season if that happened but I want him there between the hedges on Thanksgiving. And I don’t wish that because it just isn’t right. For one, I root for all talent from UGA because it’s good for the whole state? I don’t know why you one can HATE GT that much that you can’t even show sympathy for someone who can’t play football again.

Yeah UGA can handles GT pretty well every year but so what? We are a sub-par ACC team lol. I wish UGA the best but let’s get real at the same time. They have a lot of work ahead of them. They didn’t beat one top 20 team last year. Can’t win a championship playing like that. Not to mention, Alabama is looking pretty unstoppable. Just trying to put things in perspective, bashing one program doesn’t do much good when your own program isn’t winning the big games.

Second, you need to state stuff that at least makes sense. Our “remedial” program is lot better than most schools. Personally, I don’t know what UGA athletes major in, but management majors at Tech make an average of 50 grand median salary? I bet thats way more than most of the communications majors that a lot of athletes go into. One of the reasons a lot of athletes don’t come to Tech is because we don’t offer these “dumb-it-down-for-the-athletes” classes. Do me a favor and hop off the GT boards. I’m sure by your lack of class you yourself have never seen the inside of a college classroom, much less the inside of one in Athens. Hang on to that 10/11 bandwagon as long as you can so you can ride on the coat tails of what better men have done and pull for a program you’ve done nothing for! And as always, please, maintain that backwoods behavior of yours, it assures me I make the right decision every year to pull for the Yellow Jackets! THWG CLASSLESS fans!

Not that I keep up with a lot of GT players but this kid was one of the best to come along in years. Tough to see it end. He had a future playing on Sundays. Good luck to the kid, get that degree and use it.

No worries Julian. As you can see, you obviously won’t be missing out on much. Good luck man.

For the dawg trolls on here, this is like injuring both hands so that you could never do what you love to do in front of the computer again.
JB doesn’t respond well to the word “can’t” so it’ll be interesting to see how this develops. Hope he progresses and maybe we’ll see him in a few years as a grad student.

This still sounds strange to me. What was the friend doing during the sex/rape? According to information collected by Atlanta police, Pollock approached a 23-year-old woman leaving a Buckhead bar and invited her to his nearby apartment. She and her friend, another female, accepted the invitation.

In an e-mail, police information officer John Chafee said that “the victim advised police that she remembers being at the apartment and then waking up to the suspect raping her. She told the suspect to stop and then she and the other female left and called police.”

It sounds strange to me too because I thought all Techies were perfect little angels who didn’t do things like drink and go to bars. Beyond that I don’t see anything strange. The guy was trying to get a little action while the girl was passed out. Its creepy, pathetic and illegal, but I’m sure you Techies will find a way to rationalize it just like everything else that makes you look bad.

Thanks.

Man, it sucks to hear that JB won’t be playing anymore, even as a Dawg fan I love his motor and intensity on the field, but off the field he come across as a humble, softspoken, intelligent, down to earth fellow. I will miss seeing him play the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Julian, you have one very good thing going for your future, you are still going to get a free education from a very respected Institute that will open a lot of doors in your future. God Bless Julian. Go Dawgs and GATA!

UOAD, I agree — she woke up to find herself being raped and said stop, so he did, and she left. Last time I read anything about rape, a simple “stop” didn’t end it. Certainly not excusing the behavior of the guy, but let’s hear all the FACTS before we judge anybody. Of course, as we all know, FACTS are something that trolls never consider. Thanks to all the classy dawgs who have posted about Julian, but to the few trolls who have been on here spouting drivel, all I can say is that you embarrass yourselves and the school you claim to represent. Thanks too to all those classy dawgs, like DawginLex and Dawg48, who have called down the pond scum like dawfgan and ten out of eleven for using this particular blog as a forum for showing their mental and social inadequacies.

“…she woke up to find herself being raped”

Your words, not mine. So its okay to rape someone as long as they are unconcious? Wow Techie. You’re really digging yourself a big ole hole here.

At any rate, I’m off this subject. Its just funny to me how Tech fans love to throw all our arrests in our face but as soon as one of their own gets in trouble its always some BS about how we shouldn’t judge and should let the facts play out. Techies are ready to throw every UGA football player in to prison but are big advocates for the rights of the accused if its one of their own. Flip flop Techies. Now one of their coaches isn’t even a “Tech Man” either. That’s a new one. I’ll give you Techies one thing. You sure are creative.

Thanks.

This is a sad story for a young man who obviously loves football. At least he has a scholarship to the highest rated Public University in America. If he applies the passion he’s shown for football to acedemics and his future career, he’s going to do well in life.

Thanks to 10 of 11 for reminding me why I so often think that UGA fans are the most obnoxious in the country and to most of the other DAWG fans who posted and reminded me why I’m wrong to think that. If I were Jason White, I wouldn’t worry much about a GT fan showing up to kick his ass. I’d be more concerned about the true DAWG fans kicking his ass for making the DAWG Nation look like pathetic, imature losers.

So true, CraZy, I enjoyed watching Julian play, even if he was playing for Tech and not the Dawgs, that guy just had a motor that wouldn’t stop. He always seem to be near the ball and he was a BIG playmaker, he will be missed, even by his competition. I think that JB will continue to be successful, he still has his free education and I just know that with his drive he will get his degree and make something of himself in life. God bless you Julian, I will have you in my prayers.

Got to put my $0.02 for JB. Best pound-for-pound LB I ever saw. I’ll never forget that Al Groh buried him on the depth chart when he first got to GT because he thought JB was too small. Apparently size isn’t everything, b/c he was a starter by mid-season of 2010 (Al’s first). Hope Al learned a lesson with that one.

This is terrible news. We are very thin at line backer.
Its been a long time since I felt this bad about a team. He was one of the only super talented players we had on the returning team. I hope they prove me wrong, but if Tevin starts this season we don’t have much of a chance. I know it seems like we got some good recruits this year, but it was average at best and there is not much talent returning other that attouchu and uzzi. This offensive scheme will probably lead us to another disappointing season playing in a no name bowl.

We are young at LB but very talented. There are other places where we are much thinner and/or need much better production than LB (DL, QB and B-Back come to mind).

Truce time, Techies: I wish this young man the best of luck, and any TRUE Dawg fan does the same. These blogs are set up (and we all know it) so we can blast away at each other. However, when a young man’s career is cut short by a terrible injury, all TRUE fans (both sides) will join together to wish him the best. We’ll dog (no pun intended) each other out later. Right now, I truly wish J.B. a bright and happy future.
