Burnett’s career appears over

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson did not close the door completely on linebacker Julian Burnett’s playing career. But Burnett’s neck injury, suffered in the Sun Bowl Dec. 31, appears to have ended his career.

“Well, you need to get that statement from Julian,” Johnson said Monday, following Tech’s first spring practice. “If he’s not out here, he’s probably not going to play.”

Burnett will be placed on medical scholarship, meaning he is ineligible to play in the coming season.

“He’s a heck of a competitor and a good football player, but there’s bigger things in life than football,” Johnson said. “You’ve got to be safe.”

Burnett led the Yellow Jackets in tackles for the past two seasons, despite starting only eight games in 2010. He was named to the All-ACC second team last season after finishing fifth in the regular season in tackles.

Johnson said Burnett will remain involved with the team in some fashion.

“He’s disappointed,” Johnson said. “Like anything, you want him to play, but I think he can look at the big picture, and the team doctors and everybody sat down and talked to him and explained the situation and I think he understands.”

His loss will not be missed at all. He was not productive for Tech against VT’s giant QB Logan Thomas last season. He was no significant impetus within Al Groh’s D. Lucious Sanford was better than him. When I was at Tech we had a very good LB corps consisting of Bill Flowers, Stan Beavers and Dave Beavin, with Coach Carson and Maxie Baughn as D coaches, Carson as a fomer D player. We stopped opposing teams better than Groh’s D’s back in 71-72. Look a how VT’s QB ran right up the middle last year in BD. Where was Julian?

@ dry dirt road, now is not the time to post something like that. In doing so, you show yourself to be no better than ten out of eleven, even if you are a Tech fan

I feel relatively certain there every team from the 70’s would get drilled by a team from today.

By the way, dry dirt road, he was busy forcing a David Wilson fumble that night.

Mr. Jason White (AKA 10 of 11), if my daughter showed up on your step and wanted to sell you girl scout cookies would you beat her up so she knows you are a tough guy? She’s a fan of Tech. I guess she deserves it…huh? You are a mean sob! I’m scared…

I’ll play ball. It’s classless because a kid got hurt and won’t get to play again. Instead of considering the fact this is clearly not a minor injury, you came to rag on him as though he was the reason his team lost. Get a life, loser.

Yes, the world hates us. Makes total sense.

Why don’t you point the out the relevance of your idiotic comment, you troll?

10/11 is no UGA fan, no sport fan would be like that no matter how big the rival.

Burnett will do fine, he’s all class and heart and they never fail.
Johnson is right, Football may be Burnett’s passion but like has so much more to offer and in the end it’s just a game

To Ten of eleven and Dry dirt road -

You are too young and immature to understand the significance of what’s going on here. To you – it’s all about the wins (for UGA) and losses (for Tech) – or the negative aspects of how an individual played a single game – nothing else matters. This is the supreme and all encompassing thought for you and many others like you when it comes what the history books will show when adding up the total wins and losses to date as well as those games against each other. Nothing else matters – No where will it be recorded that Julian Burnett’s football career and future opportunities on the gridiron were cut short by an unfortunate neck injury while playing in a post season game in 2011. The notation will be that Tech lost the game to Utah in over time and was left looking toward the following year after losing yet another post season game. But you see – the real story isn’t about the game or who won – it’s about an individual who gave his best on every play for the few seasons he played for Tech. It’s about the heart of a young man whose life was forever changed in an instant during that game. It’s about difficult decisions that he had to be make to leave the game he loved in order to protect his life and health for a future that now would not include football. It’s about once leading the defensive team by example and playing the game for the love of it rather than being able to notch victorys on the locker room wall as fans like do in blogs. And it’s about showing sportsmanship by leaving the bravado and boasting behind while playing the game as it was intended – preparing through hard work and dedication and then showcasing his talents on the field for his pleasure as well as those of us who watched and admired his efforts.

Maybe, as you grow up in the years to come – you’ll come to understand and appreciate these points – and come to see that there really are things more important that happen on the football field that transend the final score – that ultimately mean more to mature fans than how many games UGA has won over Tech – or how the player did on a particularly difficult day for most players on the team when we met Va Tech.

Sure – wins are great and allow us to feel proud – but when it comes to a persons heart and having fans witness first hand the effort and desire he played with while wearing the Tech uniform – scores become very insignificant – and certainly out of place when offering words of condolence and reassurance.

While I am constantly amazed at the stupidity and insensitivity of some of the bloggers out there I am also astounded at the same people trying to defend their insane comments. Such is the case with 10 of 11. Pal you have no defense. You are an insensitive creep. The defense you posted is just as stupid as the original comment you made. Did you get over served tonight? That may very well be the best excuse for a defense you could post for such a classless comment.

If headley and ten out of eleven are the same person, he really has gall berating anybody’s field of study when all he has is a correspondence degree from Troy. Headley actually admitted that one day on the blogs, so it’s not something I am making up. I don’t know what JB’s major is, but I think it is management, and I guarantee that’s tougher than anything he “studied” on the Troy website.
