Tevin Washington, part 2
Greetings-
Sorry this is late. I was detained by other work stuff, principally an interview with women’s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph and then some reporting at the South regional at the Georgia Dome. Onward to the second half of the interview with Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington, covering a variety of topics.
1. On playing Virginia Tech in the opener: “I’m excited, to be honest. We don’t have to wait until game 8 to play them. We get to come out, give our best shot to them coming out of the gate. I think it’s going to be a big game. I mean, I’m excited. I know everybody on the team is excited. It’s a big game, on Labor Day. I think it’s going to be a good game.”
He said it’s a motivation to players to play Virginia Tech instead of an FCS team in the opener.
“There’s a lot on the line coming out on the first game,” he said. “It’s a conference game, we’re going to get a chance to make a statement in the conference and I’m pretty sure nationally. So everybody’s hyped up and just ready to go.”
2. He noted that in the past two seasons, playing the Hokies later in the season, players are “kind of banged up” by that point. He said he didn’t mean to use that as an excuse for losing, ” But I just think we’re coming out of the gate playing them first. We’ll get a chance just to go out, everybody’s going to be fresh and get a chance to see who’s been preparing better in the summertime.”
3. Washington said he feels like a senior already (which he should, I suppose, as he already is one in academic standing). For one thing, he said, he has teammates asking him for his opinions on professors and classes. He looks around the locker room and can remember all the past teammates who have worn numbers, played positions and lockered in stalls that have been taken over by newer teammates.
Said Washington, “It’s changed totally.”
4. On the quarterback competition in spring practice: “It’s always a competition, especially at quarterback. Everybody always wants to see who the quarterback’s going to be. You just go out there and compete. Competition brings out the best in everybody. I’ll be ready to compete and they’ll be ready to compete. So we’ll bring our best.”
5. On Synjyn Days and Vad Lee: “I think both of them are good quarterbacks. They’re both competitive and they both like to compete. Synjyn, he likes to run the ball. Synjyn likes to get more involved with everything. He’s still young but he’s growing and just learning in the offense. Vad, he’s been in the offense through the season doing the option drills and going through offensive drills during the season, but from looking at him, you can tell he’s going to be a good player. He’s real athletic and he can do a lot of good things.”
6. On how much he has paid attention to Stephen Hill’s draft status: ” You can’t miss it. Steve’s on ESPN, NFL Network. You see him scroll across the screen when they have top receivers and top prospects coming out for the NFL draft.”
7. Washington said he was happy for Hill for achieving “every college athlete’s dream” to go professional. “You can’t do anything but be happy for him,” he said, particularly knowing how much work he put in to get to this point.
(Speaking of which, LSU receiver Rueben Randle, who is about in the same draft range as Hill, has his pro day today in Baton Rouge. Hill’s place on draft boards could be adjusted up/down based on Randle’s performance today. Sports Illustrated draft expert Tony Pauline places Hill behind Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd and Kendall Wright and competing for fourth with Randle. Pauline’s blog is a good place to get an update. The 1:21 p.m. update reported Randle ran a 4.45 in the 40-yard dash.)
8. I asked Washington if Hill was the best athlete he’s played with. He hesitated, naming Morgan Burnett, Jonathan Dwyer, Derrick Morgan as other candidates, not to mention Michael Johnson and others I’m likely missing.
“I couldn’t put a finger on which one’s the best, but I’m pretty sure he’s up there with the rest of them,” he said. “You see him on the football field, but if you see him on the basketball court, you’ll see really all his athleticism. He’s real athletic. Steven can do stuff on the track, too. Steve, he’s a freak athlete.”
9. His assessment of receivers Jeff Greene and Darren Waller:
“Jeff, physically, he’s a big, tall receiver. He can go up and get the ball. Darren’s big, too. Darren’s more of a physical guy. You put your hands on him, hes’ going to let you know about it. Between the two of them, Jeff’s probably got a little more speed. I’m excited about it. Both of them are big receivers and anytime you’ve got a big receiver to throw to, they’re like two twin towers standing in the huddle. I’m excited.
“They’re both young. Both of them are eager to learn. It’s always a good feeling when you’re around other people that want to learn, want to work.”
10. On his summer plans (he interned with a law firm last summer):
“Right now, I don’t know what I’m going to do this summer. I’m looking into some internships right now, but I haven’t solidified any of them yet. But I’m going to be working an internship, get some co-op hours for the summer.”
11. On a Twitter account that apparently is trying to pass off as his:
“I had Twitter last summer, but I deactivated it. I got off it. … Real waste of time. I’ve got better stuff I’d like to be doing.”
12. His plans for spring break:
“Going home. Get some sleep in and just get ready for spring practice. That’s it.”

I think playing VT is really going to help the team prepare, they will know they have to be ready day 1. then build off that.

For the Nth time…totally different animal. We could absolutely run this offense out of the shotgun, but 2 negative things would happen…
1) We’d possess the ball less and put more fatigue on our defense. Last time I checked, Oregon’s defense gave up a buttload of points because their offense holds the ball less on each possession…plus they have more possessions to defend.
2) Why put your best playmakers in the TO offense (QB and BB) 5 yards behind the LOS? When they are up on the line even a dive that gets stuffed still nets 1-2 yards. Whn a team stunts on Oregon they lose yardage.

Does anyone else get that feeling watching Darren Waller that he could be that next BeyBey/Stephen Hill type of WR for us? He is so athletic on the punt block teams between his first-step and leaping ability…if he could develop some technique and show some good hands he could be a great WR.

I just want a WR that seals the deal on the favorable matchups (understatement, really) this offense creates in the secondary consistently. And yes, wide open counts as a favorable matchup.
I could be totally wrong- but I’d put some money I wouldn’t mind losing on seeing Tevin *and* Vad getting their own series against Polytech.
Anyone else think that no one having game film circa 2012 is advantage Jackets, more so than VaTech?

Actually the play you refer to on youtube is not the same play b/c we don’t have the option to run to the left side of the field. This play is predetermined to go to the right side of the field.
I just think if we had the “option” to be explosive on either side of the field it would be more effective.

All the triple option plays that we run, only give us the option of running on ONE half of the field because the dive is up the middle and then the QB and A-Back run to one side of the field that has been determined pre-snap.
We do run counter plays, but this play does NOT give us the option after the snap to run the play on either side of the field.
Just trying to give suggestions with the Oregon tape, but I don’t remember seeing anything out of our playbook in the past 2 or 3 years that give the triple option to either edge of the field like Oregon.

FL Jacket, I agree with you 100% about Waller. He has outstanding physical traits to work with and could very easily be the next Johnson/Thomas/Hill. This coming season Tech HAS to get better production from the B-Back position and the passing game has to improve dramatically or we will be in for a llloooooonnnnggggggggggg season (Unless the Defense makes a dramatic advance, which I’m not particularly expecting this year. I think we are one season away from having a VERY good defense though!).

Nice switch-up to take on the Hokies first. CPJ could add some wrinkles to the offense in the off-season. However, it will boil down to:
1) Can GT stop Logan Thomas (Va Tech QB), and
2) Can the Jackets execute on offense enough to sustain drives and score TDs.
I can’t see Vad Lee starting his first college game against the Hokies – the backup QB armchair whiners will be out in force if GT loses.

Regardless of what he does on the field Tevin seems like a fine young man with everything in sight for him. He understands his future is not football but he will be more successful than many other college football players that made their college choice purely on W’s and nfl potential.

FLJ, that absurd recruiting philosophy was made really obvious to me today in a write-up in the Augusta paper about all the “star” RB’s they have at UGA now. The last time I looked only one RB could carry the ball at a time, and usually no more than 3 or 4 ever carry it in an entire game. What are those excess RB’s going to do next Fall? Get DUI’s and steal hashbrowns?

Tevin’s maturity at Tech has been the main reason he has won the support of his coaches and teamates. When a kid is willing to thanklessly put in the work to improve like he has he earns the right to be the starter. Not once have I heard a negative comment come from Tevin in the media while Tech fans have been quick to jump off his bandwagon. Whomever wins out in the battle to be our QB in the fall I will always hold a ton of respect for how this kid has represented Tech.

There is no doubt Stephen Hill will be under center in Blacksburg. Anyone who thinks differently is crazy. He may not win us the game, but his chances of losing the game are much, much less than Vad Lee.
The Va Tech game is likely to be a 1 possession victory for either side. You don’t hand over a set of keys to a new Corvette to a kid who just turned 16.
That being said, I sincerely hope Lee is getting significant playing time by mid-year.

I appreciate the updates on the football team. This is the South and football is always in season. However, I really would like to see some balanced coverage of the entire Institute. The women’s basketball team is doing something that no other team at this school has done in years and all you guys can manage is two articles in a week. If the men were in the Sweet 16 and about to face an undefeated #1 seed, you guys would have done profiles and every coach and every player down the the ball boys. What these ladies have done is extraordinary and deserves more than token coverage. They’ve been the only team in the state worth watching for the last couple years and they deserve some attention as well. GO JACKETS

To the Tevin Washington naysayers—he has earned the starting QB job thru hard work, dedication and perseverance. I readily admit he may not be the most athletic guy GT has at QB. The younger guys will push him and themselves to win the position in the spring and summer camps. I really think we will see TW start as the #1 QB at VaTech, but I won’t be surprised to see Vad Lee get playing time and Justin Thomas too. That 4.2 40 yd. time will be hard to keep off the field. But from a purely logical POV, I think we will be better served to start with a cool hand rather than a youngster in his 1st start in a game that will have a huge impact on the season with the 1st game jitters in more ways than one–his 1st start–the 1st game of the season–a big time game on national TV–the only game that night–a game with big ramifications for the season. one thing i love is the way that cmj has Sasha Goodlett catch and shoot when she is near the basket is a work of art.
our men’s team and many other men’s teams for that matter could learn from that simple act. too often they will put the ball on the floor ant dribble when they need to take it straight to the hoop.
loved the triangle and 2 d also. that was a trade mark of bobby cremins. ahhh the memories.
sure seems like the girls are on the same track that our men’s team was back in the early to mid 80’s.

I should follow the girls better, but in all honesty, I don’t follow the boys too much either. I have just never been a real big fan of basketball. I fall in between a fair weather and a real fan. I sure did enjoy reading the article about Miss Goodlett though. It had to be hard as a young lady to be so much bigger than her peers. We could all learn from her mental and psychological growth.

Also Tevin seems like a great person, but we need the best passer out of our QBs to be the starter, to me it seems like that’s Vad or Synjyn, SYNJYN is a VERY UNDERRATED Passer, his throws against the mighty..
Uga defense, were incredible. Honestly, I am OK with either Vad, or Synjyn. But I really feel like Tevin was inconsistent. Like mostly against Miami, and UGA. His passes seemed very very bad, remember him throwing it to an “open” UGA linebacker.
But I wish the QBs the best of luck

I don’t see the youngsters beating out Tevin, for the simple fact that the reads in this offense have to come so quickly. There is no substitute for experience. My guess is Tevin starts the opener, look for the rookies to get playing time against the “lesser” foes…..

You are right but Vad has been reasearching and I remember reading about him talking about speaking with Ricky Dobbs and learning about the Option. Vad also has the physical advantage over TW because he already is taller and stronger then Tevin. I think that if GA Tech loses to VT and Tevin does not have a good performence then we will definetly see Vad Lee getting many reps in the next game. BUT SOMETHING THAT EVERYONE IS FORGETTING: Synjyn is very talented and I am sure he is doing what he can do to actually atleast with that #2 Qb spot over Vad Lee. But we’ll see…

GT Lee, do you remember Anthony Sherrod? He played basketball for Tech under Cremins and made the winning shot against UGA at the OMNI one of the years we played there. One day while I was still doing the Flea Market, his parents stopped by. I didn’t know them, but when they told me their last name, for the order they were making, I asked if they were related to Anthony. They were stunned that I knew about him and thrilled that I had really nice things to say about him. Unfortunately, it was sort of bittersweet for all of us, because he had committed suicide several years earlier. Nevertheless, it was good to give them a good memory of their son.

I really resent anybody calling me a racist, or even implying that. Some of my dearest friends at work (before I retired) were black. The majority of them (not all however) disagreed with my politics, but I loved them all, and am still regularly in touch with one of them, who happens not only to be black but female also.

Wow, since we’re on the War of Northern Agression, Sherman burned Atlanta. Johnston continually retreat and entrenched until Kennesaw Mountain. No I am not still a tech fan, my father was a football coach and coached at Georgia with Wally butts for a few seasons before I was born, he got out of coaching and my family moved to Atlanta. Still have many tech friends. Oddly and coincidentally I was friends with the Gailey family before he took the tech job. Actually went to several tech practices and a couple of games with sideline passes while he was coaching .My company for years bought Tech season tickets,most to comp for clients.

Super–I think I told you I’m going to have the hernia in the middle of chest fixed soon. I have gotten the necessary clearances from my cardiologist and PC doctors and will call the surgeon Monday to schedule the date for the procedure. My going to the T-night game will depend on the surgeon’s OK. I want to go and see the new kids and assess the impact they will have on next season’s team. But the main thing is getting it done at least 8 weeks b/4 June 16th when the crowd descends on Jekyll Island for the annual get together.

When Tech and georgia play , no split loyalties at all.I attended UGA and was on team then transferred after my sophomore season to Ole Miss. When Chan was the coaching I wanted him to be successful at tech. As a child when I was in Atlanta at a tech game I wanted tech to win but never vs Georgia.My brothers are several years older than I am and 1 is a tech fan still, but doesn’t hate Georgia, My oldest brother played ball with Kim King at Brown High school , he chose to play at Alabama instead of tech but like me still follows tech football.We all think PJ wasn’t a very good hire for tech.

All girls have testosterone just like all boys have estrogen, I know a couple girls who likely sound masculine on the telephone. I had a female classmate that sounded masculine. Rather a throaty voice, I think they call it. I find it sexy, especially when mattress dancing.

I’m all college ball, Dawg. About the only time I ever watch an NFL game is the Super Bowl. Can’t stay long, but I can talk for a bit, if you want to. Thanks for considering me a reasonable guy. Not too many UGA fans who post on here would agree. LOL

DAWG, it’s actually refreshing to run across the few who do want to have an honest discussion, without resorting to name-calling and insults. I little “ole fashioned hate” is one thing, but all too often it’s just stupid people saying stupid things. And that gets me more riled up than anything. Like I said, there are a few GOOD UGA fans who post on the Tech blogs—-DAWG 48 and DAWG in Lex, come to mind. And there are also a few who might take an occasional cheap shot but still are usually willing to engage in a real discussion

I doubt that most of the trolls, as we call them, who come on here posting drivel, have ever even been to a UGA football game. Having been to Athens, although not recently, I know there are some incredibly obnoxious fans there, but some of the ones who post on here are worse than anything I have ever seen there. And they never actually have anything to say that would indicate that they really understand anything at all about the game of football.

I’m actually case in point. I’ve never been to a UGA game or even been to Athens. My dad passed away when I was 5 yrs old and he went to UGA. So growing up I was kinda brain washed into liking the Dawgs and I just stuck with it. I do like them a lot though and follow them plenty. My heart is really with my Falcons and I’ve been to their games plenty.

OK, I will respond to your last post. When I was a kid, I pulled for both Tech and UGA. I went to one UGA game in Athens, but never to a Tech game until I was a freshman in school there. It was only then that I lost any interest whatsoever in UGA, even to the point of “hating” them. I have been attending Tech games now since my freshman year in 1962. I don’t think I have missed but 2 home games in all those years. I have never been to many away games, but I have been to some, and I have been to several bowl games. I LOVE the Jackets

The blogs can get off track real quick. It’s a shame but it is what it is. The Falcons blog was way out of control back in 08. It was constantly getting shut down. Some good football talk gets in there from time to time though.

I hate the dumb popup at the bottom of the page. I assume it is on all the blogs. I have decided to just ignore it since the advertisers base their decisions on it’s $ value to them, indicating how many readers the blog has. I’ll bet you that clicking on the down button also registers as a “HIT”, so if WE will ignore it, it will lose it’s appeal to the advertisers using this offensive way of pestering folks and maybe they will let it expire. The popup advertisements are just as obnoxious as telemarketers calling at all hours. Shuck ‘em all!!!!

I have tried twice to post my effort to confirm my thoughts on my statement posted at 12:34 PM on March 26, 2012 and the filters would not let it pass. Suffice it to say, I satisfied myself on the validity of my opinion. It is on every blog page reached by clicking the BLOG caption which takes you to a list of each blog available on the AJC website. I personally would rather pay a reasonable subscription fee that be plagued by these obnoxious popup and drop down adds. Ignore them please. If they get no hits, they might go away. Hits = $!!
