Calvin Johnson’s payday

Detroit Lions wide receiver and former Georgia Tech star Calvin Johnson put his signature on the largest contract in NFL history, an eight-year deal potentially worth $132 million. $60 million of the deal is guaranteed. That is a lot of cheese.

Johnson had the right answer when Detroit media asked him how he’ll spend it.

“I’m smart,” he said. “I’m going to invest it.

A couple unsolicited suggestions of what Johnson can do with $60 million.

- 2,495 pounds of gold at market price. Could be melted down for an awesome weightlifting set.

- Real estate is always a solid investment play. For instance, an eight-bedroom, 9.5-bathroom, beachfront home in Maui with pool and Jacuzzi. He could buy 2 1/2 of those. Good schools, too.

- Given that his mother is an educator, Johnson must know that a sound mind is perhaps the greatest investment of all. He could endow 40 faculty chairs at Tech, provide full tuition for 6,216 in-state undergrads or endow 120 athletic scholarships.

But, if he’d rather spend it elsewhere…

- One of everything at the Varsity (not including extra cheese or bacon): 437,636.

- Georgia Tech helmet signed by Calvin Johnson: 133,333. An eight-bedroom home in Maui would be the ideal storage space.

- Use of the Georgia Dome for 1,500 days. That doesn’t even take into consideration that the rental fee drops by $10,000 if he rented it on consecutive days.

- A daily subscription to the AJC for a year for 272,727 years. It’ll pay for itself in coupons.

Thanks for reading.

Wow Rick James a whole 2 on your list. Joe Hamilton was not a Tech player at the time he had his troubles. The List of UGa Players having legal troubles while on the team and in Athens is very long.

What debt?

WOW !!!! Calvin has done all this without ever, and I mean ever playing with a real Quarterback. He had Reggie at Tech and Fat Boy at Detroit. All they have to do is throw the bowl in the air and Calvin will go get it. Stafford is no better than Reggie was.

Even though I am a UGA grad, I must say Calvin Johnson sounds like a pretty good guy. Certainly not a diva wide receiver. Hope he keeps catching passes from Stafford.

Also, I have it on good authority that Calvin is very polite and friendly in public as opposed to most pro athletes. This comes from a parking valet that sees athlete on a regular basis. Most do not tip and feel entitled. But Calvin is the exception.

He will do well with his money.
