More about Tech hire David Walkosky

Greetings-

I’ve collected information about new Georgia Tech special-teams coach David Walkosky just for you, in no particular order.

1. Walkosky’s longest stop anywhere was at Toledo, from 1999-2006. He was special-teams coordinator from 2003 on, leaving to take a job at Washington State. The Toledo head coach at the time, Tom Amstutz, said Walkosky stayed longer than he could have, having turned down other opportunities to move up out of loyalty to Amstutz.

2. Speaking with him Wednesday, Amstutz had a lot of nice things to say about Walkosky.

“He’s an outstanding football coach, has a lot of energy, excellent recruiter and just a tremendous colleague,” he said.

Amstutz called him fiery and passionate and mention that he spent a lot of time in the offseasons studying with NFL special-teams coaches to stay on top of new trends or schemes.

About his fire, Amstutz said, “That’s exactly what you want in a special-teams coach, someone who’s enthusiastic and fired up and has passion. Special teams needs a little extra motivation and he’s the kind of guy that will give that.”

3. Walkosky will likely become the first coach in Tech history whose two previous jobs were at a Division II school and then the CFL. Walkosky did not fare well at Tiffin University, going 2-31 from 2008 to 2010 before resigning. I spoke with a writer who covered the team who said he was up against some tough odds at Tiffin, as he was hired well into the spring of 2008 as the team was joining a tough Division II conference after playing as an independent. For whatever it’s worth, Tiffin was 0-11 this past season under Walkosky’s successor. It can be presumed that, whenever Paul Johnson’s tenure ends, Walkosky won’t take his place.

4. Between 2003 and 2006, Toledo finished in the top 15 nationally of various special-teams statistics, such as punt net, punt returns, kickoff returns and kickoff defense, six times.  The Rockets were also 100th or worse four times.

5. Amstutz said of Walkosky’s recruiting ability that he evaluates talent well and builds relationships, which are basically the two elements of recruiting. He said he was responsible for bringing quarterback Bruce Gradkowski (now with the Cincinnati Bengals) to Toledo.

Walkosky’s time in Ohio – he is from there originally – gives Tech entrée into one of the most fertile recruiting states in the country. Tech has one player on the roster from Ohio, linebacker B.J. Machen.

Thanks for reading.

Second!

Anyway, after all the comments cpj has made on a special teams coach and basically saying he would not hire one, I am glad he changed his mind. Either read the tea leaves or listened to somebody (and all the alums).

Now if we can just get some offense in our bb team, we would be in good shape.

I think it is a step in the right direction. I also think sometimes when the game is on the line you can put some first stringers in on special teams !!!

We have lost one or two games every year because of special teams. I think a lot of it is we have a thin talent roster so the very raw talent gets shoved out there against people like Georgia who may have five star recruits starved for playing time lined up against us. It will be interesting to see what this guy does with not much to work with.

I dont’ care if CPJ got him because he wanted to, DRAD told him to, or he was listening to the alumni base. The bottom line is that he made the right call.

CDW appears to be a solid coach that will fit our dynamic well. He has passion, has experience, and has recruited NFL caliber talent. What else can you ask for in a special teams coach? I can’t wait to see the effects during spring practice.

I really don’t think there’s going to be strong causation between having a ST coach and more consistent, explosive Special Teams.

However, what I do hope happens is that during ST practice periods the offense and defense can continue working and teaching. Also, a fulltime coach may be able to spend enough time with Justin Moore and the other kickers.

Finished in the top 15 nationally six times in four years?? Now THAT is remarkable! THEN, they were 100th or worse FOUR times between 2003 & 2006, too. Very contradictive statement. Either he is VERY good or VERY bad.

Will the new ST coach be in charge of evaluating/recruiting/signing the actual punters & place kickers?

IMO, PJ hasn’t placed much emphasis on signing quality talent at these two VERY important positions, and the in-game results have been quite obvious. There’s no FG confidence outside 35 yds, and absolutely NO punting consistency whatsoever!

As far as KO coverage & return, punt coverage & return, and blocking kicks/punts goes I’m definitely optimistic about what DW may bring to the team. B/c, again, those areas of the GT teams (with the exception of Jarrad Tarrant punt returns in 2009) haven’t been anything to get excited about. In fact, special teams has done A LOT more hurting than helping GT in the past 4 seasons.

Losses that immediately come to mind where poor ST play contributed:

2011 – Sun Bowl vs. Utah … 3 missed FG
2010 – Ind Bowl vs. Air Force … 2 fumbled punt returns
2011 – vs Miami … fumbled punt return, bad KO coverage right before half
2010 – vs UGA … missed XP
2011 – vs UGA … KO coverage gives up 60 ret to open 2nd half
2010 – vs VT … 90 KO ret TD
2010 – vs Clemson … roughing punter on Clemson’s 1st pos … CU scores 55 TD run on next play.
2010 – vs NCST … 0-0 game last 1st qtr, NCST blocks GT punt for TD
2008 – vs UNC … 2 1st half missed FG, & a fumbled punt ret at end of the 3rd with UNC up only 7-0, UNC scored a few plays later 14-0

Only WnE would want GT to recruit a pass 1st/only QB to run the 3O offense that runs the ball 90% of the time.

Fact is that CPJ’s offense gives GT an advantage in recruiting great HS QB’s that other teams don’t want because they are run 1st type QB’s. Because of this Tech is not going after the same QB as Bama, Florida, Georgia, Clemson, etc.., and those same teams are not recruiting the QB’s Tech is after for their offense unless they want them to switch positions.

If Bama, UGA, Florida, Texas ran GT offense Justin Thomas would be a 5 star recruit just because of the offers he was receiving. See, now Tech has a 5 star QB in their system.

Oh and on side note, Vad Lee was big time passer in HS, he was recruited as passing QB, but he can run also.

All of what you wrote above is immaterial!

The fact is (and by fact I mean my opinion), is that when you need to PASS THE BALL vs. talented Teams, you won’t be able to and this will hurt your chances to beat big-time BCS teams.

Think about it, with this Offense we are 1-3 vs. one of the WORST ERAS of UGA FB, the last 4 yrs. of UGA FB have been very under-whelming.

When you Recruit a run-first QB, then you are telling your fanbase that a 2-min. Offense and 4-min offense is not important to your FB Program.

This offense might give GT an advantage to get weak armed, non-throwing QBs on our Roster, but once we get them here we don’t stand a better chance to beat big-time teams.

LSU
Iowa
Miami
VT
UGA

We looked like we had no chance when those teams slowed down our Triple-SLOPtion attack.

There’s a reason that only service academies run this offense, once you get past them, you have to go DOWN to crappy D1-AA to find this Offense being run.

I’ve decided to change my name here. GTfan2012 will now be known as Boot Licking Toadie2. I’ve decided that if WnE is calling me that, I’ll wear it as a badge of honor.

In your case that would be Boot-Licking-Toady2, the singular form.

When talking about a group of GT putzes that don’t know anything about CFB I use the plural form:

Boot-Licking-ToadIES.

Correct form is always advisable.

Gosh!! Weenie is so smart!! I have no idea whatsoever what 4 minute offense means. I have heard of and understand 2 minute offense. “4 minute offense”. Is this some new wrinkle in football? Someone please explain this to me.

Coach Kung Fu Panda has instilled so much of this crappy D1-AA/Service Academy Offense into the GT culture, that now our Fanbase doesn’t even know what a 4-min. Offense is anymore.

Normal BCS-Level Schools with REAL OFFENSES all have 4-min Offenses, and the philosophy is very different from a 2-min. Offense.

The DAMAGE that Coach Fish Fry is doing to our fanbase is reaching epic proportions.

We are indeed very CLOSE to becoming the “4th Service Academy”, and that is NOT a good thing when you play in a BCS Conference, even a weak BCS Conf. like the ACC.

Damage to fanbase? The only vocal voice I hear here is Whiney’s. One must also recognize that negative opinions are voiced far more often and vociferously than positive opinions.

1-3 vs. Va. Tech

1-3 vs. Miami

1-3 vs. UGA

0-4 vs. Bowl Games with 2 of the losses vs. Air force & Utah

That’s 3-13 vs. the “Meat” of our Schedule that “defines” GT FB.

Add in a 1-11 record vs. Top-50 Defenses over the last 2 seasons, and after all that could you please tell me WHY I should have a positive opinion?

We aren’t getting closer to UGA, since the 45-42 shootout in Athens (2008), we are LOSING GROUND to UGA athlete-wise and it showed in the 2011 game.

Athlete-wise do you see us closing ground on Miami despite HC-changes & NCAA allegations?

Are we getting closer to Va. Tech?

Are we playing better FB vs. Bowl games that have 4-weeks to get ready for GT?

“Between 2003 and 2006, Toledo finished in the top 15 nationally of various special-teams statistics, such as punt net, punt returns, kickoff returns and kickoff defense, six times. The Rockets were also 100th or worse four times. ”

I think what he is saying. Over the course of four years, within various special teams statistical categories (4 are listed, assume there are more, so that is at least 16 chances (4 years x 4 categories) 6 times they were top 15 in ONE of those categories, 4 times they were below 100.

You will be amazed how quick you can get through all the posts if you skip all of WnE’s posts and references to him.
I like the hire and hope it works. The kickers can get full time attention and the schemes can get full time attention. My suggestion would be to get more starters on special teams and quit burning redshirts for it. Was Waller blocking one kick worth burning his redshirt? As far as the team goes I like our chances with QB, but I still question who will be the explosive BB we need. I think Green and Waller will do fine at WR. The defense has a BIG question mark at the line again, but the secondary looks good and the LB depth should help a lot.

It’s good to see CPJ show some flexibility. It is also very good to add a coach that has recruiting ties to the Midwest. We need to recruit more offensive linemen with the academic background to survive at GT. I think the Midwest could be very fertile territory for that kind of student.

Welcome coach Walkosky. I hope you have a long and fruitful career with us.
