Tech to make football hire soon

Georgia Tech will probably fill its coaching vacancy this week, coach Paul Johnson said.

The coach will replace co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer, who resigned Jan. 27 after violating NCAA rules banning text messages to prospects and their guardians or parents. Johnson would not offer more detail about the hire and did not specify which position he would coach.

“I have not offered anybody the job yet, but I probably will in the next day or two,” he said Tuesday.

Johnson did say that he did not foresee any more changes on the staff. He said he interviewed “three or four” candidates, and that he didn’t have a prior working relationship with all of them.

He laughed at the rumor that former Maryland coach and Tech offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen had been a possibility.

“There wasn’t any truth to that,” he said.

Would still like to see a special teams emphasis with this hire. We don’t seem to do anything well during that third of the game. I guess it will help moving the kick-off up five yards and placing the touchback at the 25. We still need to see a vast improvement in special teams to better our eight wins from 11′.

I’m convinced Johnson wants what’s best for the team, no doubt. What’s best for the team is winning and getting kids in class, and that’s what Johnson is all about. Why wouldn’t he want that?

As far as Joe Ham goes, he could fit into the system as someone who can teach how to throw the long ball, read the option (as he did), and connect the program to “glory years.” That said, I don’t think he’ll be offered. …3 backs or 1 back behind the QB, a triple option is a triple option – read the hand off to the B back (or fullback); or, the QB reads the keeper; or the QB pitches the ball to the A Back (or halfback). Variations in both include the counter plays and quick pitches, as well as reverses and passes – It really is not rocket science, though you do need to make split second decisions…again, the triple option is a triple option, and the blocking angles are the same for the linemen, and the outside receivers MUST block downfield for the offense to be successful…

Only in as much as the wing-t or the i-formation is a triple option offense. The triple option can be run from all three. What I like about CPJ’s offense is the use of misdirection for reverses or reverse options. In the wishbone, misdirection was often limited to trap plays or a back in motion.

That would be more typical of the halfback in motion in a wishbone formation. Since the A-Back is already outside of the tackle, I am trying to imagine what advantage would be gained by having the A-Back motion to his own side.

As far as formation balance, in CPJ’s offense you could have 2 wideouts on the same side of the formation to create an unbalance when the opposite side A-Back goes in motion, as is typical.

The options, pun intended, really increase as pass completion percentage increases. That keeps the corners and safeties honest.

Right, George. As you watch CPJ’s offense, you can see one play sets up the other. CPJ also has the tendency to run a play until the defense can stop it. If we had an effective passing game, he would probably throw the ball all day if that was the play the defense couldn’t stop.

A good example is when Dwyer was lighting up defenses with the B-Back dive. Eventually, they would key on him and Jones or Allen would burn them on the outside. The problem came when it was 3rd and long and there was no effective option.

I typically have an idea what they’re going to do because you usually see what the defense is doing midway through the first quarter. It’s usually just a blocking change, though, and not much more.

One of the hardest things about next year will be the loss of Roddy. If you paid attention the past few years, he didn’t get many carries because he was such a devastating blocker. It always blew me away that the defense didn’t expect the play to go to his side.

Coach Kung Fu Panda has Lost games because of his gimmicky Triple SLOPtion and now he hires a Special Teams Coach? It sounds to me like playing for CPJ has caused the Players not to have Special Teams FUNDAMENTALS.

This also will NOT help Coach Kung Fu Panda get Elite Recruits and now my fellow GT Alums will keep talking about Elite Academics as the reason why we can’t get Elite Recruits. CMR would have hired a Special Teams coach with Strong Recruiting CONNECTIONS to be the Special Teams Coach. CPJ the GENIUS HC won’t do that because of his EGO.
