Georgia Tech-Boston College live blog

Greetings-

I’m going to have to join in progress, as they say. I’m on my way home and just realized I hadn’t posted. I’m interested to see what happens after Georgia Tech’s best (in my opinion) game of the season, if the Jackets can maintain the momentum and win a second game in a row.

Enjoy the game.

We do have a lot of talent on this team. Morris and Royal were very highly recruited (I’m not sure about Udofia but I thought he was too). I’m failing to understand how they can’t beat a subpar team in Boston College on a consistent basis. Even with our first win, we should’ve beaten them by 20 points. Frustrated, but hopefully CBG can get it together within these next couple years. If we have another season like this next year, I will get a little bit anxious of our team/coach. With Robert Carter and Marcus Hunt specifically, there’s just too much talent on the team to have another bad season.

This team will make a giant step forward next year. The big men are in place, just need some ACC caliber shooters/scorers to go with them. I look for the freshman and Poole to fill this need right off the bat. This will bring the defense farther out and make Holsey and Miller(with Carter) that much more dangerous.
Should be fun to see the team transform over the next couple of seasons.

I’m no hoops expert (but I am on all other matters!), but it might be like football in that the players we have just don’t fit the system CBG wants to run. Also, one of our best players is still suspended for unknown reasons.

I will say that this team seems to play fairly strong defense – although I don’t know what the metrics say – and they will not quit.

Good point supersize. I definitely agree we don’t have depth and a true point. Hopefully Poole can pick up the slack at guard. I just thought we might be able to beat a team like BC on talent and past experience unknown. I’m really excited for this new talent coming in. If GT can play like a team, I don’t see how we won’t be a real contender with Royal, Morris, Carter and Poole on the court.

George Stein, this is definitely true too. Having the right players for the type of plays that CBG runs is absolutely crucial. It’s far more important in basketball than football. But as much as Hewitt was disliked in GT nation, he didn’t recruit bad players. I’m just not seeing the team making the extra pass for a good look at the basket.

On a side note, CBG does an amazing job keeping these players fighting and that will help tremendously in the future.

“Super”, I think Udofia will have a strong senior season. He has improved over the last month more than he did in the previous 2-1/2 years combined. The turnovers are down, the assist are up and he has accepted that he can’t shoot a lick. He’ll be fine distributing the ball and playing tough D.

Wreck-Ball

Noone said that the team had a boat load of talent, but they do have quite a few talented, b-ball players. Yes. And coach was happier than a pig in slop when GT called, “who me, from Dayton?”…and he qukly got a hold of some local ATL basketball guys, Dollar, Rahim, to bail him out with what will hopefully be huge recruits from the area. He is a mid-major coach at best. Nothing against the guy, but all of this fight that you see, are just b-ball players being competiive. Dont buy into the hype.

Wreck, I don’t understand the “bail him out” comment. CBG seems to have put together a solid staff. With the talent that will be in place next year we will see if they can coach. We do know one thing, the last staff couldn’t coach a fifth grade “rec” team.

Wreck-Ball, and where are all those NBA talents that Hewitt recruited? They bolted for the NBA after one or two seasons. We don’t need a team full of NBA talents as much as we need a team full of dedicated players who will give it their all for 4 years.

In the NBA…Super, these guys who come to a supposed big time school want to go to the NBA. That is there goal…not necessarily to make us happy as fans and win a championship…although PH was in the championship game as well. Aaah, we forget that! But it is not about PH anymore. BG will be gone in due time. Nothing against him, but he is a mid-major coach.

I agree with Super’s comment on NBA talents on our basketball team. If these people are given scholarships to play college ball and the unique opportunity to get a college education at one of the very best academic schools in the country, then, honor the priviledge. The L with abusing Tech by what amounts to an exhibition for those types of players so they can get an NBA contract.

Wreck-Ball

Gold P, I agree with you there, but the reality of it is that the a aspirations of these guys is what drives them. Those who want to get their degrees will ultimately get them, but the vast majority of the guys who are blue-chippers want to play in the NBA. That is a harsh reality to face when you want a championship program. Coach Nolan R. told me once that, he realizes that when these guys, many who have a chance to make millions, I encourage them”. That is something that you nor me can have the luxury of experiencing. All we look at is the program. And when you are recruiting, what do you rather the coach recruit, a guy who has NBA talent, or a guy who you will spend 4 years trying to get him to gel with 4-6 others on the court. That is what BG did at Dayton most likely. But there is a different caliber ball player here in the south and along the east coast. I want this program to succeed, as I am a 30 year Tech fan

Wreck, why is then that percentage-wise Hewitt probably had more one-and-doners than any other coach in the country. I’m not against having NBA talent; there are plenty of teams with NBA-talented players on them who keep them for more than one year.

GOLD PANTS

@Wreck… Hard to argue with your points too. Maybe if the NBA had the same policy as the NFL about not being eligible until after their junior year , things would be different. But, that will probably not change in the near future and we will continue to be frustrated as all colleges are with this policy.

Wreck-Ball

February 29th, 2012

Exactly. GP…what many fail to realize is that the emergence of AAU ball, most of your good talents are trying to position themselves for the NBA, not for a college degree. And whichever coach and program that suits their needs, they choose. Then if they arent real good students, they bypass a school like Tech. I too, would like for the NCAA to have more to do with the student-athlete staying at least 3 years, but that may start a whole new trend of athletes leaving for the NBA right after high school. And they pretty much do that now. Tech is a really hard sell to some of these athletes. If Dollar and others land some good guys, cool, but they are going to have to find a way to coach that talent. BG doesnt know what it is like to coach good talent in groups. Nice guy, but not championship caliber.

Wreck-Ball

February 29th, 2012
11:10 pm

I look at some of the comments, and nobody would have dreamed of going after this guy for a coach at Tech. Even some Dayton fans wanted him gone. But all of a sudden, while the team is sinking further into the depths of the ACC…hmm…the clock is ticking and Tech has come from 40 behind to within 2 and everyone’s adrenaline is pumping along with BG’s; all of a sudden fans find themselves actually cheering for this guy. But why were we getting the crap beat out of us in the first place. When in the world has Tech not scored more than 30-something points in a game? 30-something points? What! But oh, it is Udofia’s fault, or its Rice’s fault…these guys are babies in the college big leagues…the coach has to take full responsibility just as he will when he gets a nice ACC sophmore welcome.

Super, to be honest, PH had more one and doners because he is a heck of a recruiter. Just go back and take a look at the type of guys that had you jumping up and down in your seat. Think about the tournament runs with these guys as well. The guy is intense. PH just ran into a wall at GT and could not get started again. But he never gave up, he was devote to Tech and still is. But fans have short memories and part of that caused a stir, not to mention those who are concerned about HIS money. George Mason did not waste any time picking him up. And he is headed to the NCAAs if he doesnt win the conference. Give credit to where it is due.

@GP…lol. I am just a little tired of seeing the team suffer. NCAA basketball is BIG BUSINESS, and many think that it is as simple as going out and picking up a couple guys from Mt. Pius or something and then letting them run up against Duke, and actually think they have a chance at winning…really? LOL You have to have at least a couple superstars on the team these days, man. I have no problem with high school players going directly to the NBA if a team will take them. I just know that I won’t be paying NBA ticket prices to see glorified high schoolers (or worse AAUers.) What I really hate is the ill-conceived “one-and-done” rule. IMHO, it is on the verge of ruining college basktball. Basketball is the ultimate “team” game and current rules are quickly taking the “team” concept out of basketball. An early poster mentioned the 1962 GT season, Alan Nass, Mike Tomosovitch, etc. What he didn’t mention was that the ‘61-’62 team went 10-16. GT added the “missing pieces”… R.D. Craddock, Ron Scharf and “Big Jim” Caldwell, and Coach Hyder molded them into a 21-5 team that competed for the SEC crown for three years. Guess I’m just too “old school” to be a modern fan.
