First observations – A well-placed bye, after the fifth game. … Six of the first eight games are at home, including four in a row in September, and then three of the last four are on the road, including at Georgia. … With three Coastal Division games in the first four weeks, Tech’s ACC titles hopes could well be in terrific shape, or dashed, before the end of September. … Duke plays Tech after its bye week, which I think it also did this past season. North Carolina will also get Tech after the bye.

if you’re wondering, Presbyterian was ranked No. 196 in Sagarin Ratings last year, between Villanova and Dartmouth. 4-7 record. the blue hose lost 63-12 to cal and 48-14 to georgia southern. presbyterian is 0-3 all-time against tech, with the last meeting in 1937. so they’ve got an axe to grind.
the game has special meaning for me since i’m presbyterian.

With classes beginning at Tech on August 20 this year I can understand the possible need for adjustment with the schedule, but I still felt Middle Tennessee State would have been a fair appointment for September 8. Perhaps it really had something to do with the pacing of the schedule later in the year with Virginia and Miami coming before MTS. If Tech can escape the month of September without a loss, then this team will be due for some national consideration. Overall schedule is pretty tough facing seven 2011 bowl teams. Time to get an early start to Bobby Dodd Stadium and enjoy that great view of the Atlanta skyline.

Tech fan since 1950 – i think the move of MTSU was largely due to a desire to have a bye week later in the season and to not have to play an FBS team five days after what will presumably be a physical and emotional grinder in blacksburg, even if it is early.

Horrible schedule.
4 September homes games playing in a crappy ACC and playing vs. crappy OOC Competition means 4 NOON STARTS in hot a**, humid deep south weather, what a kind gift for one of the “older fanbases” in the South.
Students don’t like the NOON Starts, tailgaters don’t like the NOON starts, and yet here we are “the King of the Noon Game on ESPN3″.
Despite an ACC-CG appearance GT FB sure has taken a huge step BACK WRT the TV slots that we get, our TV schedule is like a eff’n Conf.-USA Team.
Welcome to small-time CFB GT Fans we are now Officially the “4th Service Academy”!

I say 8-4, maybe 9-3. Plenty of noon kickoffs. You’ll average 300 yards rushing per game. The passing game will be a joke. The defense will be a joke. You’ll lose to VT. You’ll rattle off a few wins in a row and start running your mouths like you own football. Then you’ll lose to somebody you shouldn’t and go back to the academic talk. Paul Johnson will say something on a radio show that gets you all fired up. You’ll lose to UGA. You’ll lose your bowl game.
BORING. I guarantee you that at least 90% of the above will prove true. Georgia Tech football is so predictable. No wonder you don’t go to the games.
Thanks.

Ken, the MTSU situation still bothers me a bit, because we did beat them pretty badly last year at their place. This is a tougher Tech schedule, at least at the beginning than I expected, but I do think the Tech athletic administration, coaches and players need to develop a toughness that has been missing in some key situations in recent years. I understand that maybe the bye week caused the rescheduling of MTSU and I accept it now a little bit better since the month of September overall appears to be pretty tough.

No problem with the heat for me either, but I do know that a lot of our older fans hate the Noon starts.
Also we get less tail-gating with Noon Games which means we will end up with fewer fans that have positive experiences and this leads to FEWER repeat GT Fans, and this leads to smaller crowds.
BIG-TIME CFB in the Deep South is played at 3:30m or between 7 & 8pm, small time bush league programs get slotted into TOO MANY Noon starts.
GT should tell the ACC that we will only play Night Games and force the conference to help us with our attendance issues.

VT and UGA are the toughest games on the schedule. Miami is in ATL so that helps.
At clemson? ouch
AT UNC? Who knows what Fedora brings to the table

Productivity from Vad Lee and the improvement of the defense.
I say 9-3 at best with 7-5 a real possibility.

Ed,
I think 7-5 with a loss to UGA would not be good but looking at that schedule and i cant find more than 5 possible losses (UGA, VT, Clemson, Miami, and a surprise??) So assuming not crippling injury (see nesbitt) then I think we will be looking more like 8-4 at a minimum.
Assuming that there is visible improvement on the defense in year three (as there should be) and looking at the quarterback prospects we have as Fr and So. I would have to say that things look better over the next 3 years or so not just the same old 8 win seasons. atleast in my opinion.

Ken, thanks again for keeping us all in the loop. You’re a real blessing as a beat writer. 5150 UOAD….wasn’t even comparing to the Georgia schedule, besides that school will sell out its stadium and not have to run newspaper ads with gimmicky season ticket packages where the rival schools buy them up and throw away the tickets to the games they don’t want. Play some real teams besides your freinds over in Athens rather than adding a bunch jokes to the already weak ACC schedule.

With all due respect, and I mean that sincerely, I am not satisfied with only being competitive 2 out of 4 years…..that really isn’t consistently competitive to me. I am hoping for the best, I just haven’t seen a lot to suggest much improvement next year. I am certainly willing to give CPJ a couple of more years at least, but I think it is time to step up to the next level of competing annually for the ACC Championship (which isn’t so great to begin with, truth be told.)

Fair enough, FMJ, but I meant that we were competitive two out of four years and didn’t win and did win another time. That’s three out of four seasons we’ve been in it into November, which suggests 2010 was the anomaly.

realfan….I don’t know WHERE you attend games, but at Tech they use computer scanners. They tabulate the number of TICKET HOLDING people that ATTEND the game.
if you are so so smart how can MORE people ATTEND a Vols game than the stated seating capacity? I guess they COUNT the Tickets or the dial number on the turnstile.
Attendance and ticket sales are different things. Many schools have games sold out but the attendance is not sold out.

When you lose to Fla. you will be talking about a real neutral site is needed and

Devil learn about college scheduling before saying a team avoids somebody. FSU is not a set game for GT. Clemson is GTs ACC rival and the only Atlantic team GT will play every year. FSU was in the 08-09 schedule and will come back around in about 4 years. This is true for all confrences and trying to schedule games. It is the same reason the UGA vs Bama games were rescheduled as they are not automatic games. Damn those little things known as facts.
That said this is not a strong schedule and things will be bad if 8 or 9 wins don’t happen. I know the last minute VT change changed things up, but Presbyterian.

6-6. Loses to Va Tech, Clemson, UNC, Miami, UGA. 3-1 vs. Maryland, BYU, Virginia, & BC. Favorable schedule except for the road trips to VT, UGA, and Clemson. I could see 8-4 if passing game improves, but I just don’t see any better than 3rd in the Coastal. This year will be my third as aseason ticket holder. Living in California limits me to 4 or 5 games a year. The fact that only 45,000 Tech grads live in Georgia highlights one attendance problem. UGA grads tend to stay in Ga and Atlanta and there are a lot more of them. Beating UGA more often and winning an occational bowl game would help as well.

Wow…7-5 or 8-4 at best. VT and UGA are definite losses. PC, MTSU, BC, Maryland and Duke are almost certain wins. You’ll go either 2-3 or 3-2 among Clemson, U.Va., UNC, Miami and BYU. That will be the difference between 8-4 or 7-5. Don’t see very much latitude otherwise.

Thank you Ramblin Man. I just needed proof that a Tech fan understood this since so many came bashing UGA on our blogs because we didn’t play Bama or LSU in 2011. People forget that UGA split with Bama in our last series and swept Bama in the series prior. Also had that high scoring game at LSU followed up by the home loss with the celebration penalty against AJ Green. UGA isn’t avoiding anyone either.

Big Old Dawg ……… Buffalo, Fla Atlantic, Ga Southern.
All 3 of those UGA 2012 opponents would lose or be lucky to beat MTSU. And none of the 3 would come close to beating BYU.
But Dawg fans everywhere can rejoice ……. You’ve got the cajone-less McGarity setting up UF-like OOC schedules. Remember those? When UGA fans everywhere complained about UF playing the San Jose’s, Buffalo’s, Fla Atlantic’s?
And McGarity’s so worried at the possibilty of losing to Georgia Tech that he’s got GA Southern coming to Athens for game ELEVEN!

Since you seem to be able to see the future (and in such great precision as well), can you tell me what the closing price for AAPL will be on 5/1/12 and also what will be the price for West Texas Intermediate Crude on 5/31/12? Ben Bernanke likely has a job for you – you are being wasted forecasting the scores of college games.

As usual, the biggest question concerning Georgia Tech’s football schedule is who in the world cares? This is a program that very rarely finishes ranked, very rarely plays in a January bowl game, very rarely wins any bowl game whatsoever, and very rarely beats its biggest rival. Look up the word “irrelevant” in the dictionary and there’s a picture of Buzz staring right back at you.
I’m becoming more and more convinced that they hired Paul Johnson as a marketing ploy more than anything else. He’s got a sharp tongue and runs a gimmick offense for the media to talk about. They needed to generate some excitement about the program after things went stale under Gailey. Things are going stale again. I barely even watched them play last year. Its very boring and mediocre football. Nobody cares about Georgia Tech football.
The truth hurts.

Man, I thought UGA schedule sucked. This is even worse. If Tech is praying for a good season, the schedule may help. Lets see, you guys have got the Presbyterians, the Mormons, and the Catholics. Why didnt you schedule Baylor and SMU just to have all the denominations covered? .
Tech isnt asking for contributions through the mail this year, they are passing the collection plate around during the game. That may be OK, though, If everybody in attendance at the average Tech game gave $1, you would have 10 or 12 grand right there.

That’s right. GT should play someone on a national level. I mean – who the heck are BYU and where the heck is Provo, UT? All BYU has done is play in 7 bowls in a row and won 10 or more games 5 out of the last 6 years.
GT needs to schedule powerhouses like Buffalo, FLorida Atlantic and Georgia Southern.

TECH has been trying for the VOLs but to no avail. Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Miss St, Vandy, Bama and Tech moved the game from 12-13 to like 18-19, Kansas, Auburn, U Conn, & BYU are all the Non-UGa OOC teams Tech has played since 2002. Come back with UGa’s OOC foes please.

If we start 2-0, may get a little ahead of ourselves and start looking ahead to the U and redemption for a horrible loss last year. Sagarin’s computer program adds ARTIFICIAL (i.e. personal bias) strength to the SEC teams. As does ESPN & the BCS. It’s a $ thing DD. Or maybe it’s vice-versa …. Sagarin get his bogus team strengths based on bogus rankings provided by ESPN & the BCS (the controllers of NCAA football). Again DD, it’s a $ thing.
You’re not as dumb as you’re portraying yourself to be on this blog, even I have faith in that. But Buffalo, GA Southern & Fla Atlantic would be lucky to beat MTSU, and none would have a prayer of beating BYU.
