Georgia Tech-Maryland live blog

Greetings-

We’re about 25 minutes from tip and I’d say there’s about 100 people in the Philips Arena stands. I trust it’ll fill up; crowds seem to have been late-arriving this season and traffic is a little busy. But former Wake Forest coach Dave Odom is here for his TV work.

Some thoughts on this afternoon’s ACC extravaganza. Some thoughts.

1. Maryland has been playing Nick Faust at point guard with Pe’Shon Howard out with an ACL. The move “gives them great size and an ability to make some dynamic plays because he’s a talent, there’s no question about that,” coach Brian Gregory said. Faust is 6-6 and more of a forward. He’ll be a tough size matchup for Mfon Udofia.

2. Maryland is 1-6 on the road this season, is 13-1 when it out-rebounds its opponent and 2-10 when it gets out-rebounded. In the first meeting between the teams, Maryland took 38 rebounds to Tech’s 36.

3. Jason Morris should be more mobile and explosive with three more days to heal his foot injury. He gave 17 minutes and did not score against Clemson.

4. Quotable Gregory: “Sometimes, when you’re in the middle of it like we are, sometimes you take a step forward and two steps back and then you take another step forward and eventually, at least, you’re in a much different place than when you started. The job now is to continue to not have those two steps back and that’s kind of what we did on [Tuesday] night.”

5. Brandon Reed on Udofia being the team’s leader:

“He’s always been like that. He just has a way of saying words that people gravitate to. He’s very passionate about what he’s doing, so I think that’s really why he’s the heart and soul of the team.”

Enjoy the game.

kind of a problem: tech is playing as well offensively as i’ve seen this year, and they’re up two points.

Softball just lost their fourth in a row when it looked like we might actually have a good team this year. I guess women’s basketball is our only hope now. We just extended Danny Hall’s contract after two horrible post season collapses with a top 10 team. Rad’s volleyball coach from LSU can’t make the NCAA tournament. We can’t sell basketball tickets and we are building a new arena. DRad isn’t looking very good right now. He should have left for Knoxville when he had the chance.

Glad to get a win today if only to give this team some confidence. LOsing does get old after a while and this team needed this badly. Remember, Maryland beat Tech badly at their place earlier in the ACC season so, quite a turnaround IMO.

I’m happy for the guys.
Do we have only one inbounds play?
Reminded me of the trouble Hewitt’s teams had with getting the ball in after the other team scored.
Many good defense was part of the failing.
Odom wondered why Miller got the inbounds pass since he traveled.
And why none of the five broke for a long pass as a way to break up the congestion when we could not get it in.
No time outs left?

@ex season—- I agree with you, probably at least two players should break long to break up the congestion. There is a catch to this though esp if the referee calls a spot throw in whereas the inbounds player cannot move basically or risk being called for a walk. I did not know there was such a thing until this game— we were called twice for this violation. IMO, this gives the defense a big advantage esp if the opponent’s defender is very tall .

OK I confess.
I the ex season ticket holder after buying the last two years.
Believe it or not, last year did have some moments including the big W at home over UNC.
I thought it might have continued if the team would have just gotten flu shots.
Maryland ended that run with Oliver out with the flu and Hicks injured I think.
I think Cammeon is developing into quite a player with hopefully two years left.
I thought Jason Morris might be farther along but he also has 2 more years.
He needs a good point guard to get his game going.
Udofia tries harder than anyone on the team.
Dude has heart.
Miller hopefully will keep getting better too.
With the new additions next year, we might be good.
Please coach, tell your assistants to add a good point guard to this group.

bye bye robert barron. dont let the door hit you in the AX on the way out.

good to see the guys improving. we have played much better in 2 of the last 3 games which we should have won 2 not 1, had we won at vt that would have given us 2 road wins this year. 2 more road wins than we have had in a long time with our former tur d.

good to see we have guys actually improving. udof is looking much better than he ever did under phew.

@ GOLD PANTS, I wasn’t home this afternoon, so I recorded the game. I just finished watching it, although my DVR shut off with 18.2 seconds left after Tech couldn’t get the ball in. Thank God we held on. If anybody is still here, tell me what happened at the end.

I will say this after watching though. This team was a scrappy young team today, and based on that, I think the future looks good, especially with the good recruiting class coming in. Udofia was VERY GOOD today!!!

Nice game by everyone today. Most fans I have seen so far at the game and they became lively at the end when the team needed it the most. I thought our inside game was good, especially against Terps big guys. Helped to have nice 3s especially w. Foreman hitting a couple. Overall great effort, best I have seen since Duke. Please guys, think a little more- 5 second counts on ball handling and inbound plays- Really?
