Rice’s suspension will continue

Georgia Tech guard Glen Rice Jr.’s suspension will continue into the Yellow Jackets’ Tuesday night game against Clemson. Coach Brian Gregory said on the ACC teleconference Monday morning that Rice will not play in the game or practice with the team Monday.

Rice was suspended indefinitely prior to Tech’s Saturday game against Virginia Tech, a 74-73 overtime loss, and did not travel with the team to Blacksburg, Va. The Jackets played one of their best games of the season, losing on a desperation 3-pointer by Virginia Tech guard Dorenzo Hudson as time expired.

“I was proud of the way our guys competed for 45 minutes and I thought we played some of our best basketball,” Gregory said.

Rice, Tech’s leading scorer and rebounder, also was suspended for the first three games of the season.

@GTBob….problem is Brian Gregory is not a coach yet….haven’t seen anything yet that resembles coaching

If you think this then you didn’t watch much GT basketball last year and this year. There is a huge difference in a lot of key areas. The guy inherited a terrible team who lost it’s best player to the NBA. I’m not sure what you expected this season to be like.

Just another excuse being used by all the koolaid drinkers. Do you really see any improvment in this GT team? Improvement, even with these players, it what is necessary to prove a coach’s value. This team does not improve! From week 1 to now this team shows absolutely zero improvement. Why do you think BG will turn this around? How many years do you give him? 10? 20? 30?

@ Buzoff, YES, I see improvement in this team. First, we beat UGA IN Athens, which hasn’t been done by any coach since 1976. I have yet to see us fail to get the ball in on an inbounds pass, something which Hewitt’s teams struggled with EVERY GAME the past two years. We play better defense and have better rebounding. And when we go inside, we actually hit lay-ups, another failing of almost all of Hewitt’s teams.

@Supersize….I would put alot more $$ down that I will be saying the same thing next year at this time and you will be trying to continue to defend with the same stuff again (ie need to get the right players, new stadium, need recruiting, players hurt, players suspended). Mark it down GT will be DEAD last in the ACC next year in basketball and go to the crappy bowl again (and LOSE! again).

@Supersize…you are kidding right? GT beat UGA? That’s an accomplishment? UGA got beat by SC (I think). UGA is the Worst team in the SEC and I don’t care about records either.. GT lost to Alabama, LSU, Fordham, Mercer, Wake etc….etc. GT has NOT shown improvement this year….they cannot press, turn the ball over ALOT…cannot hit FREE THROWS….cannot run the floor on a fast break….CANNOT defend the 3 point shot (worst in ACC)….and CANNOT shoot or score!

should have hired MARK PRICE, I know some of you go crazy when that name gets mentioned and were so hellbent on getting Gregory hired, well good luck with that cr@p…

I realize Gregory was the water boy assistant while Price was winning the 3pt shootout in the NBA so Price could not hold a candle.

Buzzoff, in case you don’t remember, Hewitt had teams that lost to far worse UGA teams than the one in Athens this year. He even somehow managed to lose in Athens in 2004. Explain that, please.

@ not happening, Gregory could turn out to be great or terrible. NOTHING that has happened this year really gives any positive indication of either result. But as for Mark Price, he was a GREAT player at Tech, but he has never coached a game of college basketball anywhere in the country. Gregory at least had coaching experience. As I said, we will see over the next couple of years how that pays off at Tech.

Yeah but normally a coach gets more then 3/4ths of one season to prove his value. I hate to break it to you but most coaches who take over for a fired coach don’t have a great first season. Do you really think we should fire him because he couldn’t take an untalented and previously poorly coached team and turn them into world beaters?

@ Buzzoff, actually, everything you said in response to my claim of improvement were trademarks of Hewitt teams (free throws, etc). Did you really expect a new coach to come in and do much better than Gregory has with those same players, and virtually no recruits of his own. FT shooting is still bad, but there HAS been improvement, regardless of how marginal in some cases, in all those other areas.

Anybody heard anything about HGH use at Wesleyan? Our neighbor’s nephew just joined the swim team over there, and she said kids were telling him he needed to get on HGH if he wanted to succeed. Is that legal in high school? Evidently kids get Rx for it for “growth” issues, and then hoard it to keep taking it or sell it to other kids

To all of you Hewitt haters-Let’s see first year GMU coach,Paul Hewitt has a 23-6 record.I thought first year coaches were suppose to have no wins records like BG.Paul Hewitt ,obviously, knows how to coach.Other first year coaches also have good records. Just face it Hewitt can coach and get his players respect. Gregory can’t.Poor choice

I wonder about those criticizing Coach Gregory: have any of you ever been paid to coach basketball? Even play on an organized team? The ignorance is astounding. No coach should be evaluated until after at least three full seasons. I’ll wait and form opinions about the Rice suspension until we know the reason(s). I do know (from watching games) that Rice wasn’t buying into CBG’s system.

Donnie, Hewitt is coaching a bunch of GOOD players that he inherited from the last coach at GMU. Once he starts recruiting his own players, then you will see the same results that he had in Atlanta the last 5 years he was there. He left Tech with NOTHING for Gregory to do much with.

Hewitt did the same thing when he came to GT, coached some good players he inherited to some degree of success. The other difference is that Hewitt now has a contract that requires him to perform. He will have some initial success, get a new gimme contract that does not require him to perform and fall flat on his face.

I personally think Hewitt can be a great coach, when he wants to be, or has to be, but the contract at GT was just plain “Braineless”.

As for BG, he inherited nothing, no team players, no stadium and next to no fan support.

He has a pass for a couple more years.

Former players like James Forrest, Malcolm Mackey, and Brian Domalik all like what they see out of CBG, and are made to feel welcome…which was not the case under Hewitt. Like many of us — those of us who aren’t haters and trolls — those players see the reasons that things will get a lot better:

All these guys ripping Brian Gregory don’t know basketball. This team looks MUCH better-coached than last year, and it’s basically the same guys. They’re losing because they don’t have much *talent*, esp at the guard spots. I’m more concerned that we don’t seem to have any true points guards coming in next year. I’m forgetting something…what was it…oh that’s right, that buster Ice. “R” is for respect, and he doesn’t deserve any.
