Georgia Tech guard Glen Rice, Jr. has been suspended indefinitely by coach Brian Gregory. Rice, who was also suspended for the first three games of the season, was not at practice Friday and will not travel with the team for its game Saturday against Virginia Tech.
Gregory did not give a reason for the suspension or offer further comment.
Rice leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring and rebounding. With Rice suspended and backup center Nate Hicks out with mononucleosis, Tech will play the Hokies with eight scholarship players, not counting two former walk-ons put on scholarship this season.

Really disappointing for Glen. He’s going to work his way off the team pretty soon if he keeps this up.

If this is an academic issue, then PROPS to Coach Gregory for making his team meet expectations in the class room as well. No more just skating by! I don’t know why Rice Jr. won’t step up and be a leader on this team. Don’t worry Tech fans the next recruiting class for GT is really good and we should be pretty deep from 2012-13 and on.

Looks like you guys have the right man for the job in Gregory, no more Coach Blewitt. It take some NADS to drop your top scorer even if the season is a wreck, no pun intended. I think if you guys will give Coach Gregory some time, he is going to do wonders for the program and have people talking POSITIVELY about GA Tech BB, again. I just hope Coach Fox will be able to get people talking about the Dawgs soon too.

@Italian_29: I think Coach Fox already has people thinking positively about UGA b-ball. It remains to be seen whether he can recruit enough top-quality talent to compete regularly, but I like the way he coaches and handles his players. He has everyone on the same page and playing hard. It is just a matter of time.
I feel the same way about our Coach Gregory. He has instilled defensive discipline and accountability. I hope he can stick around long enough to create a winning culture.

Maybe Rice and Phil Smith can keep each other company and talk about the GOOD times they had at Tech until they were asked to grow up and become a part of the team. A different concept – I’m sure – something that got lost on them about the time they signed a letter of intent.

GTman, TECH will actually have four new guys with the freshmen and KY transfer Poole(and maybe a fifth if they find the right PG to offer). New team, new building and some talented big men already on the roster, the Jackets will not even resemble this “train wreck” a year from today.

I’m happier about GT BB than I’ve been in more than ten years. I love what Gregory has done. I love the way the team hustles and plays defense. I love the way they run and think at the same time. I love their positive attitude. Clearly, Rice has problems. It’s not impossible that he’s having trouble with the academic side. Whatever it is, I’m with Gregory 100%. True, without some amazing recruiting, Tech may never compete with the big boys in the ACC. That’s too bad, but it’s not the major thing. The major thing is to play hard, keep improving, and play with absolute integrity. Over the long haul, this will produce the best result for everyone.

In my opinion coach Paul Hewitt never should have been removed, just look at the job that he’s doing at George Mason. Albeit, those aren’t his players. Still, the man coached Georgia Tech to a National Championship, and to me this alone should vouch for something. Not taking any shots at Brian Gregory, but I really think that the AD and alumni should have given Coach Hewitt another chance, he would have recruited some kids within a year or two and Tech would become relevant again. I really think this!!

@Jermaine P It’s time to put down the bottle. When and how do you think Hewitt was going to turn the program around? The program is in the sorry state that it is solely because of Hewitt. All Hewitt could do was recruit. If he hadn’t had the talented players, his winning % would be atrocious. The man couldn’t coach his way out of a wet paper bag. His “teams” could not rebound, block out, run a set play, or anything else that quality basketball teams do. In his entire tenure, I can’t think of a single player that noticably developed his game under Hewitt. None of them became better players during their brief time at Tech…they all pretty much left Tech with the same level of game they entered with. Finally getting rid of Hewitt was the best thing to happen to Tech in any sport. It just should have been done 3 or 4 years earlier. I have no idea whether Gregory will return Tech to the enjoyable bb that they used to play under Cremins, but he already has shown improvement on the court and off.

Coach Gregory better take note….the GT faithful treated Bobby Cremins the same way as Hewitt…coach Gregory is a good coach..just like the last two, but bottom line there are still a lot of factors that impact the success of a program. Even the most storied basketball programs cannot maintain and avoid the roller coaster ride…fans need to understand to take the good with the bad. I keep hearing GT fans talking about “getting the program back where it use to be” but how quickly you forget the ones that lead them to the highest level the program has EVER been.

Another Hewitt testimonial. He must have some type of coaching ability. He’s coaching Div I college ball. Of course there are better coaches and there are worse. @stony…you obviously know nothing about college athletics. You are correct about one thing, Hewitt was a hell of a recruiter. You would have been mad if he couldn’t get those players to GT and mad now that he did recruit them there…make up your mind. Hewitt took guys like anthony Morrow, who by the way was only recruited by one other ACC school (NC State) and developed there skills to become successful players in the NBA and other professional leagues. So don’t question his coaching skills. It’s all the people that want to publicly bash players and coaches and the big money donors that want to dictate college agthletics

@Jermaine P. – I thought as you for a long time. The players we had had attitude problems, not lstening to the coaches, not doing the workouts, not doing what was asked during games. The rebellion was huge, much like UNC had with Daugherty. I blamed the payers – it was obvious the team was not doing what Hewitt asked.
But, I was at the hotel after that last horrible loss in the ACC tournament, I realized that even if it was the players, Hewitt did not clean house, therefore, the blame then falls to Hewitt. He was able to recruit the really good players, but not control them. He might ahve gained one more year if he had gotten rid of Rice and Oliver – they were very devisive. I think I might ahve liked to see that team under Hewitt.

It is interesting, Gregory is struggling with some of the players because they are inherently lazy. They are used to everything working out for them because they are basketball players, and no matter what happens, they will be ok. Gregory is changing all of that, and I support him in his quest to clean up the program.
@Mac and Hewitt Fan, there is no doubt that Hewitt did a poor job of developing players. When you look at the incredible amount of talent that has played at Tech, it is shocking that there was ONE winning season in the ACC during his tenure. Using one-and-done’s isn’t even an excuse. Look at programs like Ohio State. They have done quite well with more one-and-done’s than Tech. He was a nice person, and I hope the best for him at George Mason, but he crippled this program.

IMHO (and last time I will mention him), Coach Hewitt was an up-and-coming young coach whose agenda changed after his team made the National Championship game. The “rollover” contract was toxic because it gave him the freedom to pursue it. He became a CEO type head coach without the assistants to pull it off. Coach Gregory is a hands-on, “lunch pail” type coach. This has been “culture shock” for the players. It’s all about the TEAM now. Sadly, Glen Rice Jr. doesn’t seem to get that. GT basketball will be OK. NIT next year. NCAA “bubble” the next.

The question is which type of coach would you rather have leading your program??
A.) The Hewitt type – who attracts NBA level talent. If you can hire assistants who can actually teach the result is an NCAA Final Four appearance, which Hewitt has accomplished. If you don’t have these types of assistants, you get what Tech produced the last few years – highly talented individuals who don’t play as a team, making the fan base want to pull hair out of their head, strand by strand.
B.) The Gregory type – Doesn’t recruit very well, but supposedly teaches the fundamentals much better. A more hands on coach who preaches team. If he does it well you get a well oiled machine w/ less highly regarded recruiting classes. If he doesn’t teach well you get what you’re currently seeing – horrible basketball w/ no hope because their is no talent on the floor.
Me personally? I’d rather have option A (I’m not saying I’d rather have Hewitt himself as he seemed like an arrogant pompous jackwad). If you can get the talent, it’s much easier to get top notch assistant coaches. If you don’t recruit the talent, you can bring John Wooden here and it wouldn’t help.
Just my 2 cents.

Rice was never suspended when Hewitt was there. What is Gregory trying to prove? He appears to be trying to make an example of Rice to empower himself.Coach K and Calipari are great coaches not because they suspend their players whenever they feel like it,but because their players respect and trust them.Perhaps the Little Gregory General should try the examples of the great coaches if he ever wants to be one.Maybe he is jealous because Rice’s dad banged Palin-who knows? He has a lot to prove himself or he won’t be at Tech long.I am not impressed with him and when he starts losing commitments he will be the reason.

I believe Gregory will have the program where it needs to be in a couple of years. Programs such as Duke/UNC recruit stars that become team players. They pick each other up and with that comes success for the team and then for the player. Many kids look for their success first. I also think that Fox at UGA will get the talent he needs and will be fine given time. Hewitt was a fine person, but like others have said, he could not coach basketball. Sure Rice would score 15 points, which he certainly should have given the number of shots he took in a game. Half his shots were hurried and his drives were often out of control/did not have an idea what he was going to do. Can’t wait to be at Alexander next year. It will always be that, but thanks to the McCavish Family as well.

I do not think Gregory will ever get us back to NAT’l title game. That should be the measuring stick. Cremins got us to a final 4, Hewitt got us to title game, and now Gregory needs to elevate us to the final step. Just do not see any positive signs from his coaching. Our out of bounds plays were bad with Hewitt, it is embarrassing now.

Jacket93, nice job for comparing this to politics.
Let’s do that shall we? Yes things under Obama are worse than they were under Bush, but only because of how bad dubya ran the country into the ground.
So now things look bleak under Gregory, but only because of how bad Hewitt’s program was run.
Now Obama will turn things around, just like Gregory will, but it takes time. It’s like the old saying, “..sometimes in order to take two steps forward you have to take three steps back.” Or something like that.

I support Coach Gregory 100% and have no doubt Rice’s suspension is justified. I am dismayed at the so-called Tech fans here who are piling on Rice and speaking so disparaging of him. He needs to continue to mature, and he shouldn’t play if he is not being a positive, productive player; but I do give him credit for sticking around (when several did not) and trying to make the adjustments to a new coach new system and clearly, a more disciplined and demanding work ethic than he was recruited into. Rice should know that we want him to succeed here at Tech, for his own sake and the team’s.

I went and watched Tech two years ago… they were playing Clemson. Clem Tech was in basic 2-3 zone, no traps, nothing special, just your basic 2-3 zone. Georgia Tech looked as if they had never seen a zone. No penetration by the point guard in the gaps up to (make 2 guard 1) no short corner, no flashing in the post, no skip passes, the wings never got rocker step ready to shoot, I mean it was pitiful. As we were leaving I wondered what the heck Tech was trying to do…I coach high school basketball and I’ve seen better offensive strategy by HS coaches….and Hewitt was making how much money?

Student athletes are basically employees. If you don’t obey the rules of your employer then you lose pay. Take these scholarships and subtract money when offenses occur. So tired of this stuff! So many kids working their way thru school and most of them going into debt! “student athletes” (pretty much an oxymoron in America) accumulate no debt, feel privileged and appear arrogant. I’m not in denial.
The problem with GT athletics is dumb ADs period.
Dodd was dumb to take us out of the SEC.
Who deserves the blame for the Curry years? (one good one out of seven and 4 losses in a row to Duke). If Dodd forced the hire on Homer, then maybe Homer should not have had the job.
Here are Tech’s three very good football coaches: Heisman, Dodd and Freigen.
The O’Leary year were not much better than the Curry years until he hired Freigen (which may have been forced on him).
When Hewitt’s team made the NCAA finals, Dave Briaine should have run the annual renewal contract by a GOOD attorney who knows the ups and downs of sports. If we could fire Cremins and be on his back the last two years then we are probably going to fire anyone. Braine did the annual renewal to save money as Hewitt was the hot coach of 2005 and could have commanded over 2 mil a year but a good attorney says pay the man so u can fire him when things go bad.

I just wanted to reiterate my post from before, I think that you guys have a coach that is going to get GT back to respectability and in contention for championships. I don’t think it will be overnight though, Coach Gregory will need some time to get the program back on track. At least he is trying to instill discipline, something that Coach Hewitt lacked and it showed in the way the team played. I hope Coach Fox is going to be able to do the same with our program, but it still remains to be seen. GATA

Not impressed in the least with how DRAD handled the minor investigation that has mushroomed into a problem. I think the NCAA will give the trophy back.

Agreed.
But I do not like the throwing all the players under the bus.
I was a season ticket holder until this year of football and until this year of basketball.
Jason Morris showed his stuff in both the Uga win and the near win vs Duke.
This coach needs an offfensive mind on his bench if that is his flaw.
Morris should play more and get more shots and it should not take a suspension to have it happen. I like that Coach Gregory has taught rebounding skills to the team.
Had we added a PG to this team, it would have been a lot better.

I don’t deny that it happened, and I don’t make excuses for it. You, however, continue to bring up incidents at Tech while totally ignoring similar or worse acts at UGA. Was the 1990 incident bad? Of course, it was. Was it inexcusable? Of course it was. Was it the most heinous ever? I have no idea; I don’t keep score nor do I keep track of all the events that have happened at either school involving athletes. It really doesn’t matter whether it was or not. The fact is that there are kids at both schools (ALL schools, for that matter) who do stupid, even criminal acts; some get away with it, and some don’t. It is obvious that you just want to dredge up past events involving Tech athletes and totally ignore similar events that happen with UGA athletes……for instance your bringing up Crittenton while conveniently ignoring Terreal Bierria.

Deal with it and just think twice before trying to zing UGA fans on here in the future for giving you a little grief over your thugs. Or be reminded on here again of your “proud” former players beating up women and hospitalizing them.

What are UGA fans doing on a Tech blog? I am not proud of former players beating up women. Are you proud of a current UGA football player who assaulted a woman? I make no excuses for what was done in 1989, but I expect to hear your excuses for your current football player who is facing domestic violence charges.

@ Let me out here, bug……so if somebody breaks into your house, that means it’s ok for you to break into somebody else’s house too? That’s the kind of “logic” your 4:38 post employs. And regarding Gregory and his treatment of Rice, did you ever stop to think that it’s nobody’s business why he has suspended Rice. Nothing was ever even implied that a crime was committed. I have no idea why he suspended Rice, and I really don’t care; I trust that Gregory did what was necessary under the circumstances, whatever they were. Let’s just look for the immaturity factor (behavior-wise) around the team to lessen considerably – from all appearances, Rice, Jr., became as much (if not more) of a distraction as a scorer. Hopefully, he’ll learn from this & regroup – for whatever career he’ll have and otherwise. Now, Coach Gregory and his staff will spend even more time returning this team to the winning ways that were commonplace under Cremins!

HT & Super beat me to the punch but I replied to him on the ball breath on the SABAN letter blog before you guys did.
It is not homophobic at all…It is DAWGPHOBIC. As High Tech said it is based on what DWAGS do.
There is a new Smart Phone app called are you a DWAG FAN. You put it on your phone and you can walk around holding your phone at peoples butts and it sniffs to see if the person is a DWAG fan. It is more PC in the office than actually sticking their nose between a persons cheeks.

I guess somebody at the AJC is sensitive about the use of the term red neck, since it will no longer accept it as one word. You apparently now have to put a space between red and neck. SHEESH

High Tech…USMC DWAG is real smart. I guess he doesn’t know there are plenty of illegals in the military that can become US Citizens by serving. He sees a foreigner as illegal. I guess he doesn’t understand the STUDENT VISA concept. He only understands Grease Gun, K-Bar, and a 45 as the weapons he lives by.

UOAD, I just don’t think of either “cracker” or “red neck” as being racist in tone. Both have historical connotations that are definitely not racist in nature. The N word, however, is purely racial and racist.

yeah, UOAD, you were a little slow on that one. LOL
That being said, however, the act is obviously degrading and wrong, and those who did it should be disciplined or punished. But it galls me that ANY muslim can take a self-righteous attitude about it considering all the acts of desecration SOME adherents to that faith, e.g. the Taliban and Al Quaida, have performed on both dead and living humans.

I think it is easier to self identify as a red_neck than as a cracker. Look at some hit country songs such as “I’m a Red_Neck Woman” and “I’m a High Tech Red_Neck”. Those songs probably wouldn’t sell as well as “I’m a Poor Dumb Cracker”.

It is amazing how you can take good kids from good homes and put them in the GT ghetto and they become a part of the environment. It is just sad how GT can take these good kids and expose them to an environment where they feel they have no other choice than to become a part of it. The State of Georgia should just build a fence around the GT campus and make it an extension of the Grant Park Zoo…So very sad.

UGA has a real need for Max. I hope he considers all the positives to playing football at Georgia and becomes a Dawg. Actually, the only negative to Athens is the fact the GT ghetto is only 70 miles away. It would be better if the Tech campus was further away.
