Tech’s Rice suspended

Georgia Tech guard Glen Rice, Jr. has been suspended indefinitely by coach Brian Gregory. Rice, who was also suspended for the first three games of the season, was not at practice Friday and will not travel with the team for its game Saturday against Virginia Tech.

Gregory did not give a reason for the suspension or offer further comment.

Rice leads the Yellow Jackets in scoring and rebounding. With Rice suspended and backup center Nate Hicks out with mononucleosis, Tech will play the Hokies with eight scholarship players, not counting two former walk-ons put on scholarship this season.

I support Coach Gregory 100% and have no doubt Rice’s suspension is justified. I am dismayed at the so-called Tech fans here who are piling on Rice and speaking so disparaging of him. He needs to continue to mature, and he shouldn’t play if he is not being a positive, productive player; but I do give him credit for sticking around (when several did not) and trying to make the adjustments to a new coach new system and clearly, a more disciplined and demanding work ethic than he was recruited into. Rice should know that we want him to succeed here at Tech, for his own sake and the team’s.

tech shouldn’t have run hewitt off—these players don’t like the new coach and don’t like to do what he say

Did Glen Rice Sr. get in anything close to this much trouble??? I think the answer is no. He won an NCAA championship like a pro and played 10+ years in the NBA like a pro. Take a hint kid, you ain’t doing it right.

I went and watched Tech two years ago… they were playing Clemson. Clem Tech was in basic 2-3 zone, no traps, nothing special, just your basic 2-3 zone. Georgia Tech looked as if they had never seen a zone. No penetration by the point guard in the gaps up to (make 2 guard 1) no short corner, no flashing in the post, no skip passes, the wings never got rocker step ready to shoot, I mean it was pitiful. As we were leaving I wondered what the heck Tech was trying to do…I coach high school basketball and I’ve seen better offensive strategy by HS coaches….and Hewitt was making how much money?

GR has so much talent and is wasting it. He does not want to be coached and only plays hard when he feels like (not too often),

Tech cannot build around Rice, He is a slacker and it is time for him to transfer or move on.

Student athletes are basically employees. If you don’t obey the rules of your employer then you lose pay. Take these scholarships and subtract money when offenses occur. So tired of this stuff! So many kids working their way thru school and most of them going into debt! “student athletes” (pretty much an oxymoron in America) accumulate no debt, feel privileged and appear arrogant. Hit them where it hurts. Make em work and pay them less.

It’s really sad, we are big time GT fans. My son ask me why I never watch GT basketball…we live and die by the Football…I just tell him I used to be the same way about basketball when Cremins was the coach..back when they were very competive…the other sad thing is that PJ is in the process of destroying the Football program too…the Athletic leadership at GT really doesn’t have a clue

Wow

I hope these kids are looking at the Randy Moss and T.O. clown acts going on now. Once ur talent is gone, all u have left is ur character. Those two poor fools cant understand why no one wants em anymore. Looks like GRjr is headed toward the same trash heap those two are piled on.

stinger, not sure there will be room on the bandwagon for you in 2014 with Lee or Thomas running the TO and CBG’s “new” squad defending home court in the new TIT. I’m excited about the direction of both programs myself! I guess we shall see huh?

Coach BG is on the right track. He had very little to work with this year and I believe he has done a great job. Give the man time to work “his” program and then judge. To Sharon and Hewitt! above…BG is good enough and if players don’t like the Coach–they can get the hell out! They’re getting a free education to play. This is not the NBA. Get a life— put up are shut up.
I support Coach Gregory 110%.

Without knowing the full story, or being privvy to insider news, I can only suggest that Jr. may need to look at who his friends are and limit his social contacts to his teammates; and, leave those inevitable “hangers on” behind.

I agree with Supersize post of 9:45 and Full Mettle Jacket’s as well.
I’m sick of “fans” throwing players under the bus and it has been going on for a long time.
I don’t like the knocks of Reggie Ball who is seldom defended.
He would have been a lot better with Freigen as O coordinator and not the Auburn dummy.
O’Leary should have been encouraged to leave so we could promote the brains of the outfit.
Reggie started the 4 wins in a row over Miami.
We’ll never see that again.
Trolls are one thing but bashing your own college players is pathetic.
Go to the Falcons blog and get on the multi-millionaires if u have a need to do that.

I must admit I am a little bit surprised. Tech normally hides their thugs and obvious neanderthals very well from the public, until they of course slip up and get in front of a camera for an interview. M johnson comes to mind a lot. If he can last 4 years on Tech’s campus then anyone can.

I’m not in denial.
The problem with GT athletics is dumb ADs period.
Dodd was dumb to take us out of the SEC.
Who deserves the blame for the Curry years? (one good one out of seven and 4 losses in a row to Duke). If Dodd forced the hire on Homer, then maybe Homer should not have had the job.
Here are Tech’s three very good football coaches: Heisman, Dodd and Freigen.
The O’Leary year were not much better than the Curry years until he hired Freigen (which may have been forced on him).
When Hewitt’s team made the NCAA finals, Dave Briaine should have run the annual renewal contract by a GOOD attorney who knows the ups and downs of sports. If we could fire Cremins and be on his back the last two years then we are probably going to fire anyone. Braine did the annual renewal to save money as Hewitt was the hot coach of 2005 and could have commanded over 2 mil a year but a good attorney says pay the man so u can fire him when things go bad.

I just wanted to reiterate my post from before, I think that you guys have a coach that is going to get GT back to respectability and in contention for championships. I don’t think it will be overnight though, Coach Gregory will need some time to get the program back on track. At least he is trying to instill discipline, something that Coach Hewitt lacked and it showed in the way the team played. I hope Coach Fox is going to be able to do the same with our program, but it still remains to be seen. GATA

Not impressed in the least with how DRAD handled the minor investigation that has mushroomed into a problem. I think the NCAA will give the trophy back.
They threatened to take all Joe Hamilton’s great wins away (during the Freigen years) but relented.
Either they do that again or should give Miami the “death penalty”.
I’m not for the death penalty for Miami btw.

@Italian_29.
Agreed.
But I do not like the throwing all the players under the bus.
I was a season ticket holder until this year of football and until this year of basketball.
Jason Morris showed his stuff in both the Uga win and the near win vs Duke.
This coach needs an offfensive mind on his bench if that is his flaw.
Morris should play more and get more shots and it should not take a suspension to have it happen. I like that Coach Gregory has taught rebounding skills to the team.
Had we added a PG to this team, it would have been a lot better.

I watche GR jr play about 15 times in high school. Went more to watch Ryan Harrow play. But even then, Rice was a punk; he taunted opposing players, pushed, took cheap shots, was disrespectful to referees, coaches, etc. Kid is the epitomy of entitlement.
