Former Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill is one of 47 wide receivers who has received an invitation to the NFL scouting combine, to take place Feb. 22-28 in Indianapolis.
The NFL released the list Tuesday. Hill, the only former Tech player to make the 327-player invite list, declared himself an early-entry candidate for the draft Jan. 5. His invitation to the combine is hardly a guarantee that he’ll get drafted; annually, players who aren’t invited to the combine get drafted and players who do get invited get passed up in the draft. However, it is certainly an indication that NFL scouts see him as a draftable player.
The draft website nfldraftscout.com ranks Hill as the No. 7 wide receiver in the draft and projects him as a second-round selection. ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. said that Hill would have to impress at the combine to get into the third round.

Hardly see 2nd round, he had moments of greatness but tons of drops on easy balls as well. Lots of points didn’t happen due to the drops. I wish him luck though, but really could have used another year to improve.

No where close to first round or even near the talent of Calvin. He had trouble catching the ball during the his time at tech, and even in his breakout year this year he was inconsistent. Calvin never had trouble with drops. Calvin came in from his freshmen year making a huge impact.

I think you do a disservice to Hill by comparing him to Calvin, BTTF. Calvin is the best receiver in the NFL, and it’s not really close. Heck, he might be one of the five best of the last 25 years. To compare Hill, who will wow people with his measurable, is unfair. He’s a good player and I hope he’s successful, but he’ll be lucky to be as good as Bay Bay.

I can’t think of any GT WR that should go in the first 3 rounds. Megatron came from an entire different scheme. Option, option, option. Doesn’t translate to the NFL, unless Denver drinks the Kool Aide on Tebow and builds around him instead of making him a better passer.

It really all depends on how well he has recovered from the surgery to replace those cinder blocks with real hands. When do the bandages come off?
Seriously, this kid has a lot of potential, and could go far, but he will have to really impress to overcome his dropped ball past. Could have used another year to get his drop problem further behind him.

If Stephen Hill has a monster combine (sub 4.45 40-time, +38″ vertical, mad jumping and shuttle skills) and has a strong Pro day or individual workout with a team…its very easy he could be a selection in the 1st 3 rounds.

Hill runs a 4.25 40, 44″ vert, Bench reps are low but getting better. Has great hands, could run drill 1 handed and out perform most receivers at combine

You would think that a receiver that has played in high school and college would be able to catch the ball more consistantly. I’m not sure he can improve. I hope he can. Calvin and Demarius caught the ball with their hands not against their body. Hill never did that on a regular basis.

There was a previous article that talked about Stephen working out with Calvin this past summer during the NFL lock out. Hill commented on how it affected his intensity in the gym. My money says he’ll show up, demonstrate some speed and hops. If he catches well in the drills, he’ll be 3rd round. If Kevin Cone can play for the Falcons, Hill can get on somewhere.

The first thing I think of when I hear the name Stephen Hill is “what could have been”. This guy seemed to have all the talent and skills, but just didn’t have the focus. I’ve never seen a player drop as many wide open balls as he did, and enough with the faking an injury when you drop a pass. Have some self respect. Admit you dropped the ball and get them back on the next one. That is what the great ones do. He was embarrassing to watch at times

If he is able to run sub 4.4 during the combine, I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes it into the first two rounds. He can’t catch the ball? Well, I remember there was a receiver out of Maryland who couldn’t catch a cold for that matter Darrius Heyward-Bey who was a top 10 pick. Of course, it was one of the most controversial picks in the draft and the team that did draft him was of course, the Oakland Raiders.
Of course, there was a lot of factors working in his favor at the time; weak WR class and the Raiders needed WRs.
Am I saying Stephen Hill will get drafted in the top 10? Nope. I seriously doubt it since there are at least 4-5 receivers who have resumes that look much better and lately, receivers haven’t gotten as much love in the 1st round of the draft (since they usually aren’t productive in their first 2 years although AJ Green and Julio Jones have proved otherwise).

Based on what I witnessed being season tix holder …. IMO:
If he has a good combine, SH will definitely get drafted (but drafted too high).
If he has a avg or less combine, SH will PROBABLY get drafted only b/c some team thinks they might be able to make something out of him and his measureables: 6′5″ 205 lbs, speed & leaping.
In short, SH has a shot at the NFL b/c of his measureables.
And just like recruiting & poll rankings … you’ve got one group saying SH is the #7 WR, and a 2nd round pick. Then you have Mel Kiper saying SH has to IMPRESS at the combine just to make the 3rd round.

No way will I ever agree with “Mr. Kiper”, so I shall guess —– oh, 5th Round. The potential is there, it just needs to be shown at proper time. If Stephen can make an NFL roster (even if it is sticking to practice squad) and can avoid early injuries, he can be a good, solid, quality, bargin pick for some team. He needs to finda a run-and-shoot offense and not a run oriented one.

I think Hills comparison to Bay Bay and Calvin – in any fashion – are a slap at two greats who have laid it all on the line every down they played at Tech and their respective pro teams – unlike Hill who is known to coast on more than one ocassion when blocking or going after the ball. Please, let’s not compare him to anyone – let him stand on his own merrit and achievement rather than sully the names of those who gave – and continue to give – 100% – whom ever they are. He maade one spectacular catch – in the Clemson game. This doesn’t make him great – it makes him inconsistant because we all know the talent is there but wasn’t used. He got wide open more than once for long scores – but again was it Hill or the fact that the DB’s were playing up to stop the run and he was able to get behind them utilizing his speed. I’m sorry, I just don’t see him making it in the pros if he couldn’t hack it in college ball.

@Beer Stein – why do you, and others like you act as if the scheme that a player plays within in college determines the amount of talent you have? Are you insisting that if Calvin played in triple option in college, he would not be as skilled as he is today? The pro set he ran in didn’ make him fast, tall, or make his quick in-air reactions to the ball. Bay Bay played in the triple option, and he went 1st round. Talent is talent people!

You can teach anyone to run a route. Then again…you can’t. The NFL draft is littered with the David Terrell’s, Charles Rogers’, and Mike Williams’ who had the protoypical size and speed (and in some cases hands) to be studs…but ended up duds.
While I agree reps in a system are important…I would say fairly certainly that given the complex schemes in the NFL that include zone-read recognition, route adjustments, and other nuances…NFL coaches probably get these WR picks acclimated to an NFL scheme in OTA’s way more than they ever could in the college schemes and limited practice time.
Stephen Hill will get taken more for his athleticism, upside, ability to make the big catch…and yes his blocking ability will matter.

Fl Jacket, The NFL would prefer receivers who have been in schemes where they have to done the very things you mention for 3 years. Stephan Hill is years behind the curve to receivers who’ve been in a more complex systems.Dwyer is a very good example of a player that suffered from playing in a limited offense. Pittsburgh coaches said they had to basically reteach him the RB position. There are many aspects of offensive football that aren’t covered in a service academy offense. I don’t doubt Hill will be given a shot drafted or not, his size and speed will get him the look.

Let me shatter some misconceptions for you…did you ever hear about the OTHER Adrian Peterson? He was CPJ’s B-Back at Georgia Southern and despite whatever limitations you think a “service academy” offense places on a RB…he had a pretty long and productive NFL career.
Second, you don’t think Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, or soon to be RG3 have to re-learn their positions after coming from single pass read option offenses? The first 2 have had success…and I’m sure RG3’s success will have less to do with what he learned…than how athletic and intelligent he is.
Jon Dwyer wasn’t drafted late because of the offense he ran in. He was drafted late because he had questions about a failed drug test and some lingering injuries limiting the NFL scouts ability to work him out.

Does anyone know the primary reason for Hill leaving? Was it grades, greed, goofiness or what? I think TW will start, but Vad may get some significant playing time. Days also seemed to have a good arm—what 5 for 8, so if Hill had stayed and if our team does well, he could get some extra visibility as our feature receiver that should have raised his prospects for the NFL—being a contrary “spirit” to Ghost’s comments above. You can’t coach speed or athletic ability–SH has those—his heart, commitment and technique may not be there which that can change with proper mentoring. If there were not some other driving factors, I think he should have stayed another year. Since it’s too late for late—best of luck to him.

He has size and the speed to do well that said remember the game NCState I think it was where he dropped the ball as he was 30 yards ahead of everybody and that TD catch would of made that game out of reach instead of a nailbiter. The part I really didnt like is after the drop he limps off like he pulled his hamie..A real hardnose player makes the catch then limps..But much to his credit he returned and made another catch showing his grit. I wish he was staying but he probably will make the NFL and further frustrate Tech fans with Johnsons inability to win 10 to 11 games with the talent he gets. Congratulations to Stephen Hill. Getting the combine invite is what 99% of players can only dream about. Hope he is enormously successful and comes back to finish up a college degree after nfl. Big decision for a 21 year old and he probably thought it best to take a shot at it. I enjoyed watching him play at Tech- good luck to the young man.

From what I’ve read so far on the net and from what the “experts” are saying, Stephen Hill is likely to be drafted. Might be in the 2nd round might be in the 7th round, who knows. He will have to improve his hands if he ever wants to see the field as a receiver but he has the blocking skills that a lot of receivers who come from the spread offenses do not have.
Also, if he does get drafted, his chances of surviving the cuts greatly increase (especially if he is drafted in the first 4 rounds) since the team that drafted him invested a pick on him and would like to work with him more closely than say a undrafted free agent. He just needs to work hard, study hard, and show the coaches that he can improve. Plus, be willing to play special teams or anything else the team asks him to do.
Hopefully he does well at the combine and gets drafted high. Perhaps this will allow future recruits to see that receivers from a triple-option offense do get drafted.

His true talents were not exposed at Tech, because of its run savy offense. Here is the tale of the tape on him… 6-foot-5 Frame, 4.4 40 yard dash, 45′ inch vertical. He had the nation’s top long jump as a senior in high school, alos won a state championship in basketball. In addition, he was the anchor of a 4×100 team that broke a 15 year record held by SWD, that had one future silver medalist on the team (Angelo Taylor).
Since, this is a weak WR draft, I think he could go secord or third round, which will probably work him into a starting lineup. Heck, I hope my Eagles draft him!!! Steve will be fine because he will finally have a “true” wide receiver coach.. One thing for certain, he can run block.. LOL..

I enjoy the open space at our home football games. It gives me and my friends more area for our halftime fantasy medieval warcraft roleplaying exhibitions. They are a section 227 favorite!!!
A free hotdog, coke, and a stop at the D&D store after the game makes tech the best Saturday football experience in the South.

Hugedawgfan – You obviously don’t know your football or the players who perform for each team. Calvin didn’t have a problem with ANY UGA DB – especially Oliver! His ONLY problem was with our QB R Ball – and trying to catch the crappy passes that were thrown his way. Calvin had No Problem with any DB he played against – particularily what UGA had to offer. Don’t pat yourself or UGA on the back until you’ve looked at ALL the evidence.

Hill is a third round pick at best in my opinion.

all the evidence you need is he didn’t catch passes vs UGA and he did catch passes vs. other teams he played against. Of his almost 3000 yards very few were against Georgia.

Ghost of the Plain….your statement about Dwyer and a late round pick was due to the GT system is way, way off. A failed drug test pushed him down the list, nothing more. Check your facts before you post!

Megatron caught a few against UGA. I believe it was one TD and about 100 receiving yards between 2 games. If Ball was on target those stats would change. It is what it is….he seems to be pretty good to me.

The various Mock Drafts have him anywhere between the First and Fourth Rounds, averaging around the Third. All it takes is one team to “fall in love” with Stephen, like the Broncos did with Tim Tebow, and he’ll go high in the draft.
His pro day will certainly impact his standing as a large number of teams will be able to “kick the tires,” so to speak, and he’ll have an opportunity to showcase himself against some of the top receivers in the draft. If he holds his own, or can actually exceed expectations, then he has a chance to move up in the draft.

All the evidence I need is to know that R Ball CHOKED EVERY TIME we played UGA – including the game where he threw it out of bounds on 4th down to “stop the clock” down inside your 20. The only game R Ball brought with him when playing UGA was his “D” game. If he had played against UGA like he did against most ALL our other opponents there wouldn’t have been any way y’all would have won or Calvin wouldn’t have cleaned your plow. Go back and look at the tapes – you guys loved R Ball and Gailey and it was written all over these blogs about how happy you were that these two were on the Tech sideline.

Stephen Hill will NOT be drafted in the 1st 3 rounds of the draft. He is a day 3 kind of player. Yes, he can run and he is tall, but he is very inconsistent catching the ball. He drops WAY too many passes. He also only had to run 1 route at Tech, the 9 route. For you Techies there are 8 other routes in the route tree he needs to learn. He will go in the 4th or 5th round.

I can understand a layperson thinking that he dropped “easy” passes. Because he was so wide open and the passes so soft it’s believed that any reciever should catcht them. But, when you have to ratchet down your speed, twist your body, and try not to fall because you can’t get back up and run in college, you’d see the large part that poor passing played into those drops. Expecting a tight spiral in your extended hands and having to “pretzel” around to catch a sinking duck at you hip makes the reciever look bad when it’s not really his fault.

If SH couldn’t live up to the hype at GT … i.e. according to all the “experts” he played in a weak football conf. Plus he seldom was double-covered. Then he surely isnt’ going to suddenly bust out at the NFL level.
Being a GT fan, I hope nothing but the best for SH, but I’m being realistic here. SH will get drafted, and it’ll be way too high wherever he’s picked, b/c some team will think they can make something of his measureables (6′5″ 210 lbs, speed & leaping). He’s just simply not a WR at the next level.
I don’t blame the kid though … if I was 20/21 years old, and had the opp to leave college for a MINIMUM $390,000 (that’s the 2012 NFL league minimum for rookies), my behind would be gone too!

LOL. You gotta love how the biggest story in Tech football right now is ONE player getting invited to the combine. I haven’t heard a peep about your recruiting class. Let me guess Techies, another stellar top 50 finish? How in the world this is such a huge improvement over Gailey is beyond me, but you Techies keep smoking that CPJ crackpipe. Works for me. 1-3 vs. the Dawgs.

So GA TECH Old Timer–I guess when you all win it is a team effort but when you all lose you blame it on one guy. Fact is, CJ did nothing against UGA due to the fact that the DB covered him like a blanket. Reggie Ball or not, CJ was non existant against UGA.
