Tech coach Spencer resigns over rules violations

Georgia Tech co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer has resigned. Spencer offered his resignation in the midst of a school investigation into numerous text messages to recruits that he had sent in violation of NCAA rules.

“I find it inexplicable that an employee would violate these rules with regard to text messaging after our ongoing focus to educate our personnel on NCAA rules and regulations,” athletic director Dan Radakovich said in a statement. “Actions of this type simply are not acceptable in our programs and will not be tolerated.”

NCAA rules limit electronic communication between coaches and prospects or their parents or guardians to e-mail and faxes. Other forms, such as text messaging and instant messaging, are not allowed.

Monitoring software caught the violation Jan. 12, and Spencer was placed on administrative leave the following day. The athletic department has been in a state of high alert in matters of NCAA rules compliance since being placed on probation after findings of failure to cooperate and failure to meet the conditions and obligations of NCAA membership in an investigation into possible impermissible benefits violations to two former football players. The school notified the NCAA immediately following the discovery of the violations.

Spencer offered his resignation Jan. 27. Prior to that, Tech coach Paul Johnson had recommended to Radakovich that Spencer be fired. In the letter, obtained by the AJC through a Georgia Open Record Request, Johnson said he found Spencer’s actions “troubling and inconsistent with the expectations I have for our staff.”

“There is no need to put our program in further jeopardy,” Johnson wrote.

The matter is not expected to affect the school’s appeal to the NCAA sanctions, the verdict of which is likely to be released soon. It is unclear, however, if Tech’s probationary status would impact the degree of any sort of penalty levied by the NCAA for Spencer’s texting violation. The investigation is ongoing.

Sewak is the man for the O Line. Now we can get another coach. Maybe a Special Teams coordinator or someone to take either QB or RB duties from Bohannon.

Spencer needed to go. He was suspended once already for actions such as these last year. He was also the head recruiter involved with Junior Gnonkonde and Will Adams, both of whom signed elsewhere. I appreciate the AD and CPJ for getting rid of this problem…

Please Chris, tell us all about Reuben Houston. And be sure to only tell the facts that make Tech look bad, leave out all the info that does not support your hatred for Tech.

One question, Ken. Does Johnson not have the autonomy to terminate a subordinate without Radakovich’s approval?

Come on guys. Tech will never win another National Championship. It’s over. The school is great, but the location sucks. Nobody in their right mind would pick Tech. Concentrate on the murders, thefts, and rapes. Paul Johnson will get run out of town, just like all of your coaches do.

Wow it’s signing day and this is the story coming out of the trade school. Talk about poor timing from cpj. I guess he wanted to get kids signed before he hit them with yet another embarassing issue at ghetto tech.

This is so bad after the endless string of bad publicity at the trade school I’m not even going to kick them right now. I mean fun is fun but this almost makes me feel badly for them.

You know George, the kind of cajones it takes to fire a DC immediately following a conference championship season and the schools first trip to a BCS bowl in the second year of the staff? Is that the type of cajones that CPJ seems to be missing, Sam? Better to have given a DC that clearly was not working another two or three years to try and figure it out. Now that takes cajones.

ld,

Is every Tech fan in denial of wrong doing? Your AD and HC both are upset yet many of your fans don’t want to admit it was wrong or make light of it. Just grow up and take your lumps like the rest of us do when our team gets mud on our face. Tomorrow is another day.

If the article is correct, Coach Spencer knowingly and repeatedly violated the rules despite strict instructions from Tech’s Athletic Administration. His actions appear indefensible unless D-Rad is scapegoating Spencer.

Too bad for all involved. The bigger issue is the NCAA lag time in recognizing text messaging and IMs. When is the last time anybody received a fax (that wasn’t spam)?

Perhaps the UGA fans lecturing us about our violation(s) should focus on their own head coach, who has committed a violation of his own by commenting about an uncommitted player.

I’m not a Tech fan, but this infraction could have happened at any school. Remember last year when CMR had to report inadvertent texting contact with a recruit?

But Spencer obviously stepped way out of bounds on this. Let’s just let sleeping bees lie on this one.

Obviously Coach Spenser did something seriously wrong to receive this punishment, That said, I can say that this will be a loss for Tech as he was extremely will liked and respected by the offensive linemen. I really hope he lands on his feet somewhere.
