Georgia Tech handcuffed itself in its recruiting efforts with impermissible text messages to a recruit and his father. The NCAA banned the Tech coaching staff from initiating telephone or written communication with the prospect for four weeks, starting in late December, according to an e-mail from Tech compliance director Jerome Rodgers that was obtained through the Georgia Open Record Act.
NCAA rules forbid all forms of electronically transmitted correspondence to recruits or their parents or guardians except for e-mail and faxes.
The NCAA penalized Tech for two of three texts, which were sent in November. The third was a text from Tech coach Paul Johnson, who thought he was replying to a text from a team member, not a recruit. In the e-mail, Rodgers called the violations “inadvertent.”
The e-mail noted that the school sought NCAA permission to divide the four-week penalty into two two-week periods in order to contact the prospect, identified as “Will,” during the week of his official visit to Tech. Sandy Creek High offensive lineman Will Adams visited Tech Jan. 13-15, the same weekend noted in the e-mail, and was the only prospect by that name that weekend. Reached Tuesday, Adams said he was not speaking with news media until his signing-day announcement Wednesday morning.
While Adams was committed to Tech at the time of the visit, he took an official visit to Auburn last weekend and is now considered undecided between Tech and Auburn. He is expected to announce his choice Wednesday morning.

well, it is a story, because it likely links up to the recent staff changes that resulted in Todd Spencer not coming back to the program. He was recruiting Will Adams as well as Junior Gnonkonde. My guess is enlightening everyone to minor recruiting violations is more of an ulterior motive in this article.

i would say this – the fact that the ncaa discriminates between an e-mail and a text and a fax is strange. the texting ban may be repealed before too long. it’s my understanding that it was put in place at a time when most people had pay-per-text packages, so the ncaa didn’t want coaches putting that burden on prospects.
unfortunately for college coaches, pocket fax machines have yet to catch on.

I remember a time 2-3 years ago when I was watching Tech on TV. It may have been against UGA. Tech had an offensive lineman jump offsides and when he got to the sideline CPJ screams at him “are you that f*&^$#% stupid?” Everyone could read his lips. Well, CPJ. Are you? The offsides was “inadvertent” too. Everybody makes mistakes. Don’t understand the ban against texts. Another example of archaic NCAA rules.

The saddest part of this entire story is that adults and some with still functioning grey matter between non pierced earlobes give a “rat’s ass”. When are we going to pull a Howard Beal from Broadcast News, open the window and scream, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” Tech needs to concede the obvious and join the Ivy League. Hey, after great years with Amos Alonso Stagg, the University of Chicago said enough is enough and focused on what it was chartered to do: educate students, not function as a feeder system for the NFL. This is stupid.

For the record, Brown’s endowment is $2.2 billion. They also get less of the recruiting pie when it is distributed by the league. The way the Ivy League slots (by an Academic Index) the recruiting of athletes is a very interesting practice. The NYTimes had an article about it back in December.

Yellow Maggot Killer, Tech wasn’t blatantly and flagrantly defying the NCAA they were telling them they had no case, and that they were not going to assume he was guilty based on what little evidence they had. In fact in the end of it all they couldn’t prove that there was anything illegal done, but decided Tech had covered it up and punished the team anyways.
And no Junior could not have made it in without the proper scores, that’s why he was let go (believe me if they could have gotten him in they would have gotten him in as he was too good of a recruit to cut loose for any other reason).
Brad N Tucker, Ruben Houston was kicked off the team, and was only re-instated once a judge ordered Tech to do so, as he had been cleared of the crimes for which he was dismissed from the team. Additionally the criminal activity you are referring to is not coming from the players, which is in stark contrast to the team in Athens which is a yearly favorite to win the Fulmer Cup (for criminal activity perpetuated by members of a team).

You know why all these silly little rules are in place? Coaches like Nick Saban, with him being the main catalyst. Alabama fans, cool down, and investigate the facts. For example, there was a time when coaches could visit rising seniors at their HS over the summer. The NCAA changed it because Saban abused the priviledge while at MSU and LSU. Look it up. So when they restricted the number of on campus, summer time visits, Nick went around the rule and started using video-teleconferencing and services like Skype. True story. Then the NCAA changed the rule to restrictions and in some cases completely ban “contact” with a rising senior. That’s also one reason why Asst. Coaches can visit recruits more than HC. Why? Nick Saban. They make a rule, he bends it, they make another, he bends that one. And so on and so.

Amazing that anyone (other than CPJ) still buys into the CPJ is an offensive genius theory.
“I don’t need a OC, ’cause nobody is smarter than I am”, “We don’t need a special teams coach”, “It’s not MY fault when the players don’t execute”, ad nauseum.
And he has had more success with Chan Gailey’s recruits than with his own, even though Gailey recruited for a totally different offensive scheme.
Oh, and the infractions and violations are not his fault either. At least he cannot butt-dial his phone – his head gets in the way!

Okiedawg…Break time is over. WalMart needs more shopping carts in the store. Tech does need to join the Ivy League. It’s simply impossible to recruit against football mills like UGA, ALA, LSU and Clemson when you actually have academic standards in place. Perhaps the NCAA should create conferences based on SAT/ACT scores and admission requirements. If they did that, we would never again have to suffer the indignities of “competing” against the Dawgs and their Degrees in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Physical Education or Sport Management.
