Reports: Tech coach Spencer out

Georgia Tech co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer is not expected back with the team, according to two media outlets, rivals.com and coachingsearch.com.

“We don’t have an announcement (regarding a change),” associate athletic director Wayne Hogan said Saturday.

If true, the timing is not beneficial. Coaching changes typically occur immediately following the season or after signing day. In the days leading up to signing day, which takes place Wednesday, the last thing a team wants to project to prospects is any sort of change or instability.

Prior to last season, Spencer was reprimanded by the school and suspended for the first game of the season by the NCAA for violating its rules about calls to prospects. Apparently acting under a misunderstanding of the rules, Spencer made 14 calls to prospects that were outside of NCAA boundaries.

Spencer was the recruiting coach assigned to Lanier County High defensive end Junior Gnonkonde, whose scholarship was withdrawn Jan. 20. Lanier County athletic director John White, who is also Gnonkonde’s legal guardian, said he was told it was due to low test scores, which White disputed.

White spoke glowingly of Spencer, saying he was the “No. 1 reason” why Gnonkonde committed and that he would have de-committed were Spencer to lose his job.

Spencer came to Tech with coach Paul Johnson prior to the 2008 season after serving as an assistant at Navy for the previous 11, six with Johnson. He helped the Yellow Jackets’ offensive line produce four of the most productive rushing teams in school history.

Well. If Johnson wants him out must be a good reason.

Just to let you know I have decided to let tech have Davlon. I spoke with Bobby Dodd last night and he said this good deed would help me get to heaven. Good luck Davlon. Nothing personal. I just get so much talent and tech could really use you.

I’ve got to admit, this makes me wonder a bit about the Gnonkonde situation, because there WERE unconfirmed reports that the withdrawal was at least partially due to some contact by GT that was against NCAA rules, and to avoid further conflict with the hypocrites at the NCAA, GT just cut ties with the young man. Of course those were UNconfirmed, so who knows? But this does make one wonder………….

If they cut his scholarship after illegalyl recruiting him, then it is just making a bad situation worse for that young man. If Tech did this to save themselves then it was silly, as it will not impact what the NCAA might do for illegeal recruitment. This NCAA has already shown this in the past multiple times for different institutions.

Full Metal Jacket…….that is really sounding like what has happened. Lose out on a good kid and have to let the coach go too. Not good but the NCAA makes some stupid decisions so be safe not sorry.

So if they pulled the scholarship and fired the coach recruiting him because of some breaking of NCAA rules about his recruitment, is that going to help us? What about the probation DRad got us into when he mishandled the inquiry about BeBe Thomas?

I’m worried that the kid getting punished by the Institute if the coaching staff broke the rules will make us look worse to the public and the NCAA. I really want to be a Paul Johnson supporter, but I just don’t have a good feeling about what is going on up there.

So GT & CPJ rather than have the NCAA back on campus sniffing around a school ALREADY ON PROBATION would rather scape-goat a Recruit than man up and admit they (Coach Spencer) made mistakes.

If the Recruit gets dumped for “Academics” then the NCAA has no reason to come knocking on GT’s door.

As a GT alum I would like to extend a sincere apology to Junior Gnonkonde and his HC/guardian for the way GT scape-goated you guys in the local media to save themselves & GT from embarrassment for potential NCAA violations.

With NFL experience on his Resume Giff is going to go to a SEC College or Big-12 school rather than come back to a low paying school like GT.

guys like Giff they pimp GT to show that they can Recruit in tough Academic environment and then they parlay that experience into a cushy job at one of the factories that pay a lot more MONEY.

GT is not a destination for anyone coaching-wise, it is merely a stepping stone to better colleges, better coaching jobs and more money.

I guess we now know that the HS HC was telling the TRUTH after all.

I wonder will all those anti-Wrecks folks on various GT message boards come clean and admit they were wrong about the HS HC when they accused him of LYING to cover his behind?

GT chose to play the, “we’ll get the Admission Office to ask for another Test that way we can make it seem like the RECRUIT screwed up and NOT our Asst. Coach for making too many contacts with a Recruit”.

I guess now we can call CPJ, Coach Nathan Jessep, since it is obvious he ordered the code red (i.e. illegal contacting of a Recruit) and when it WENT BAD, he cut them loose, both Junior & Coach Spencer.

And when it went BAD CPJ cut those guys loose:

DAWG FAN

As a Dawg fan, I have had much respect for CPJ but now am beginning to wonder. His lack of defense against us was glaring, yet he retains Groh. He let Gnonkonde(sp) go and I have wondered if it is the same type thing with UGA and Chester Brown – immigration – since Gnonkonde was from the Ivory Coast originally. Regardless, it is what it is.
Another thing is CPJ sticks with his spread offense, which worked quite often, but seems to still need tweaking. I can certainly understand how some of you are upset since many UGA fans have been with Richt until he seemingly woke up with most problems. He still sticks with Bobo, however, and that is an ongoing problem.
You would think some of these head coaches would pay attention to fan bases and give them some due consideration.
Good luck – we both need it!

All of you WRITE a BIG check so we can payoff HEWITT and have money to change the Football Coaching Staff. Crying and not giving money will do NOTHING to foster a change. Tech has to have the MONEY to make some moves. WRITE a check and buy season tickets when the new staff is hired.

I havw said this on other blogs, but it bears repeating. It is my firm belief after this next 8-5 season, culminted by a loss to Ugag(again) and a loss in another mid-tier half-arse bowl, Turkey neck will be shown the door. I dont see him doing much at this level, and his approach to recruiting is pedestrian at best.

5150, I agree with you 100%. 90% of the people on here complain about Tech and the coaches, but do not attend the games. I bet PJ had a valid reason for firing the coach if and when they do. Junior knew what he needed to do and did not do it. What would you all rather have Junior find a school he go to and graduate or go to Tech and fail out. Do not forget we just had a corner (Ayers) transfer to liberty because he could not meet academic requirements and he was no scrub cming out of high school. I 99% of the people on this site went to school with someone you know was dumb as a nail and the only reason he stayed eligible was because he was taken care of because he was good in sports. Stop blaming the staff for Junior and ask Junior and his guardian why Junior did not do what he needed to do to become eligible. Ask the guardian to blacken out the kids personal info, but leave his name and post his scores on the AJC, so everyone can really see if he met Tech standards. This will tell the truth and stop the finger pointing.

“Then why would other schools require him to take the test again?”

That is exactly why I personally think that even if there were some potential NCAA issues, that was NOT the primary reason for the kid being let go. His academics are apparently attrocious if someone like UF is saying he has to retake tests in order to get in. Shoot, my dog could get admitted to UF if she could play football!!(and milk bones are a lot cheaper than buying players new cars!!!)! It’s well documented that they have arguably the most lenient admissions requirements for athletes of ANY Div-! school!!!. And most of the other schools considering him are almost as bad.
However, if there was anything even remotely shady going on with this coach, given our current “relationship” with the NCAA, they would be well-served in getting rid of him asap. But it’s all speculation at this point.

Don’t see too many ACTUAL Tech fans on the blog tonight. Just mostly hot air. Next season will be CPJ’s first with all of his recruits. He already has the best winning percentage at Tech since Dodd. Some of you people act like we were coming off of a couple of dominating decades prior to CPJ. Give coach a couple of years with HIS recruits and then call for his head if things start to resemble the Gailey years.
