Tech in talks with ACC for Labor Day game

Georgia Tech is in discussions with the ACC to play in its nationally televised Labor Day night game, though chances do not appear good.

“We’re moderately interested in it, not crazy about it, but it’s got some interest to us,” associate athletic director Wayne Hogan said Tuesday. “It’s just a question of what makes sense.”

The league has interest in moving Tech’s game against Virginia Tech to that Sept. 3 date, Hogan said. The winner of that game has represented the Coastal Division in the ACC title game in each of the past seven seasons. The game would give the Yellow Jackets a national platform on a day and time slot in which it would have little, if any, competition.

However, Tech’s preference would be to not play Virginia Tech or any other Coastal Division team in that opening-week spot. Tech’s philosophy in recent years has been to play an FCS team in its opener as opposed to a more meaningful league game. For a Labor Day game to happen, the school would have to agree to it. Tech is scheduled to play Middle Tennessee State Sept. 8 and likely would want to move that game to avoid playing on a short week.

Miami and Maryland, who played on Labor Day in 2011, both had a bye week following their game. That game was the first of the ACC’s Labor Day games, part of the league’s 12-year contract with ESPN.

If a matchup with Virginia Tech or another Coastal team is in fact a deal breaker, that would leave Clemson, Maryland and Boston College, Tech’s Atlantic Division opponents in 2012. Only a matchup with Clemson would seem to have broad appeal – Maryland and Boston College were a combined 6-18 in 2011 – but the Tigers are scheduled to play Auburn in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game earlier that weekend at the Georgia Dome.

The ACC schedule is due to be released in early February.

I like the idea of this game overall. I mean we can’t really use the young team excuse every year. The only thing I don’t like is that it would probably tag Tevin as the starter where a couple of lesser teams would give Vad a chance to get his feet wet.

I’m all for playing VT as a first game this year. Bobby Dodd tried to get Georgia to play Tech at the first and last game every year. Dodd said this would get these two schools huge attention.

Then again, if Tevin stunk it up, it could signal the official start of the Vad era. If Tevin plays well enough to beat the Hokies on the road (which I doubt would be the case), that would be good too establishing us as the frontrunner early. Worst case would be Tevin plays good but we still lose. Then we got us a qb controversy.

You guys evidently missed UGA’s first game last year. You also seem to dismiss the grueling SEC schedule. You also seem to have missed the fact that CMR has beaten Bama more than Bama has beaten him.

I guess a convenient memory comes with that highly acclaimed GT degree…………..Man you guys are truly pathetic.

Check out the strength of schedule for each team here (pay attention to the won loss record too)

It doesn’t matter WHEN Tek plays VT – they will lose.

I wish Tek would stop dodging FSU & Miami. Oh wait……I get it……. you……… will come back with lame drivel about UGA avoiding Bama & LSU – you tools – we both know the schedule is put together by the LEAGUE. No one is dodging anyone.

Yeah, real grueling schedule—-Ole Miss, Miss State, Vandy, Kentucky. Wow, those are SOOOO tought and grueling. How do you sleep at night. You lose to USC and LSU, but manage to beat those powerhouses plus a very weak Auburn and Florida, but somehow some stupid computer somewhere says your SOS is high. You are a damn fool.

Please tell me how UGA had the weakest schedule. We played many of the same teams BAMA and LSU played – Ole Miss, Miss St., Tenn., Fla. I KNOW the schedules are cyclical, but you can’t brag about a tough a schedule UGAG had this year, when in fact they had a pansy schedule, and they have a pansy one again next year too. UGAG was, in fact, just a run of the mill team this year, but since they lucked into an easy schedule, the record ends up making them look better than they really were. Boise, USC, LSU, and Mich State all proved how AVERAGE the mutts were. And even lowly Vandy almost beat you and probably should have. Be proud of your team; there is nothing wrong with that. But don’t act like they were great, because in reality, they weren’t S*IT

Once again Super – follow the link for SOS. UGA had a tougher schedule than SC. If I use Tek logic we beat SC because we had more whatever’s or we fumbled or the ref’s stole the game or what…..pick an excuse.

You just don’t get it, the computer rankings don’t mean squat. NOBODY believes them regarding ANY team. A computer cannot look at a team on the field and determine whether they are a quality opponent or not. A computer only “knows” what it is told, and therefore it is a totally meaningless system of evaluation.

UGAG beat Tech because they had the better team on the field, but it was NOT a pounding. And remember the better team doesn’t always win. UGA had the better team in 2008, but Tech won. Tech had the better team in 2009, but UGA won. They were about even in 2010, and UGA lucked out. This year, there was no luck involved, but it was not an overwhelming victory for the mutts. And, like I said earlier, Tech was the best team you beat this year.

NASA feeds in FACTS. The BCS feeds in OPINIONS. They rank the SOS based on the OPINIONS entered into it by people who probably never watched a game of football in their lives. Sure Tech fans brag about yardage and dwell a little too much on the “what if’s,” but so does EVERY college football fan in the country, INCLUDING mutt fans.

The ACC needs good football rivalries, and the Virginia Tech/Georgia Tech game has become one of the Conference’s best. Promote the game as “The Battle of the Techs” and play it on Labor Day every year. A winner for both schools and the ACC!

Ga Tech has an identity crisis and is unable to field a team representative of the early 70’s when no “Buzz” was created yet. Tech has no shotgun, a weak 3 man defensive line, hideous unis, and that describes the identity crisis. During the ‘71-’72 seasons we had a more attractive yellow jacket mascot that was from the 60’s, we had a 4 man d line and Coach Carson, Glanville, Maxie Baughn and Dick Bestwick as coaches. It was just a strong team, plus we had the unis of old gold jerseys and white helmets. In other words, our platform we offered was strong. We were 13th in the nation one year, and beat Georgia one year on national tv at BD Stadium. We were an independent, and played the Div 1 teams all over the country, just like a pro team would. Tech’s identity began to erode with “Buzz”, and now has a head coach who does not believe in the shotgun all that much, but gets poven wrong year after year. If VT has Thomas back we’ll be unable to tackle him again so we’ll lose. They’ll have him running the same plays they ran for 2011. Therefore we better turn down the Labor Day offer- b/c of them, and b/c of the 2012 “yellow jackets”. I think Oregon has the real yellow jacket wings on their unis now, and Ga Tech has big nose “Buzz” with the tiny wings. Our yellow jacket from ‘69 to ‘73 had huge, high wings. Maybe I should become an Oregon fan, even though I’m a Ga Tech grad of ‘73.

5150 – you are right about UGA/Tech at the dome and that is why it will never happen. Georgia will not give up a home game (and much less money by having it at the dome instead of Athens) to do it. Sooo, the only way it would happen is to have Tech give up a home game for it, which I dont believe will happen either based on things I have read.
Heck lets bring back the JV games that used to be played on Thanksgiving day and put that in the dome !!

dry dirt road, I have said it before, and I will say it again. You’re a damn fool. Get over all that worthless crap and worry about the quality of players and coaches. The uniforms (which I believe you railed about under another name in September) and the logo have nothing at all to do with how the team plays. and you don’t Super. Let’s start with the basics (try to follow along). The BCS and SOS are NOT the same. SOS has NOTHING to do with opinions – it is in fact based on something you Tekies hold so dear – MATH.

The BCS did in fact utilize SOS in the past – they no longer use it – but SOS used nothing from the BCS. SOS is much like the RPI used in creating the NCAA Basketball brackets – still with me old timer? SOS is derived by a fairly simple MATH EQUATION utilizing opponents records as well as opponents of opponents records.

I hope I haven’t confused that mush between your ears. You might consider taking some vitamin supplements – specifically vitamin B1, B3, B6, B12, C and E commonly referred to as the brain food. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

If the BCS no longer uses SOS, it’s because they too realize it is MEANINGLESS. The RPI in basketball is a proven system of evaluation. NOBODY takes football SOS seriously.

Typical Tekie – when your argument falls apart you resort to the cute little name calling “little girl”. you must be kidding. Every visit to the Tek blog reveals more into the level of immaturity shared by the vast majority of Tek fans. I come here for amusement – I go to the other sports blogs to read about high level sports. Tek fans all react in the same fashion – when the facts crush their delusional points of view they start slinging what they perceive as insults – tooooo funny.

For what it’s worth I don’t consider 10:00 AM anywhere close to first thing in the morning. Perhaps you old timers consider that early – not me.

How’s that star studded recruiting class holding up Super? Prepare yourself for another year of total disappointment. Tek will run (pun intended) out of the gate piling up impressive stats against weak teams and then send their fans into a tailspin by getting crushed when the schedule gets marginally more difficult.
