After two separate suspensions this past season, offensive tackle Phil Smith will not play for Georgia Tech in the 2012 season.
“(After) his violation of team rules at the bowl game, I think he and Coach (Paul) Johnson decided that it’s probably best for him to concentrate on his studies,” associate athletic director Wayne Hogan said.
Smith, a redshirt junior from Tampa, Fla., was a starter for the Yellow Jackets in the 2010 and 2011 seasons and started a total of 20 games in his career. He helped the Jackets lead the nation in rushing in 2010 and finish No. 2 this season.
Smith is on track to earn his management degree this semester and would be immediately eligible to play his final season at another FBS school if he enrolled in its graduate school.
Johnson suspended Smith for the first two games of the 2011 season for violating team rules. He sent him home from the Sun Bowl for breaking team rules in El Paso, Texas. At the time, Johnson called Smith’s actions “disappointing” and said that he would address further discipline after returning to Atlanta.
Smith split snaps with tackles Tyler Kidney and Ray Beno this past season. Those two players will return, along with every other offensive lineman on the roster.

Clears up some scholarship space, especially with the OL from Australia visiting this week. Some legit freshman and redshirts who will be trying to get a spot on the line. Sims will have some big holes to run through next year.

I wish him well and I also wish he had followed the team rules as expected; we could use a player with his ability and experience (as a senior he would bring strength, size, leadership, experience, etc.) on the OL.
Paul Johnson once again proves he has standards (he says what he means and he means what he says!). As a GT fan, I really like his approach! The younger players will simply get more playing time…….football teams must have players ready and prepared to step in to the starting line-up when needed.

Ramblin Man, I think the consensus is generally international teams playing American Football rarely rise to the level of FBS college teams. The exception MIGHT be the pro teams of Canada…but I wouldn’t want to see what a mid-tier NFL team would do to one of them! There are lots of countries that play football, but their best of the best might not beat out a top FCS team in America. At least, that’s how it was put to me when I inquired about Sean Bedford’s experience playing pro “gridiron” in Spain.
I think Europeans would probably say something similar about American soccer teams, though, so it only seems fair.

Go Jackets, the player we’re recruiting plays American Football (which they call “gridiron”) in Australia but does not play “Footie” (what we call Australian Rules Football.) Now, when it comes to talented punters, Footie does produce some of the best since they are used to kicking around an oblong ball which is a lot like an American football. This is why LSU’s punter is so good, but our recruit is not from that sport. He’ll be playing the same sport with the same gear…just in our country.

Italian 29 – I don’t know whether to like you for your classy comments about the Tech program in general or call you an idiot for your thoughts and comments that brought you to this blog in the first place. I was one of the bashers of Phil – not only after both of his suspensions but after almost every game for all his boneheaded penalties in critical situations or missed blocking assignments which blew up the play before it ever got started. Only after you’ve sat in the stands at Grant Field as a season ticket holder – like I am and have been for many years or go to a great many away games – like we do – do you have the right to come on this blog to bash those of us who watch his uneven – uninspired play week after week and wonder why we don’t have somebody else better to put in his spot. What you fail to realize or connect is that his off the field attitude extrapolated to his on the field play. Phil may be the greatest – kindest – most thoughtful guy to put on a uniform at Tech – but something changed between his recruitment and the first time he was on the field that took a guy who was potentially a great player and made him into a nothing special player who was hurting the team more than he helped it. The same mistakes were made week after week – year after year. So, Italian 29, while I applaud you for your kind words about Tech and wishing us well (and by the way – I raise a glass to toast the UGA program on it’s past season and apparent awesome recruiting class) – I must ask you to tone down the retoric on Phil – at least until you’ve had a chance to watch and critique all the tapes of his performance over the past couple years – and then I’ll listen to what you have to say about him. A lot of ya’ll are giving this young man way too much grief. I have been on a “team” more than once and when your “young, stupid” mistakes hurts your teammates, no one feels worse than said individual. I and several others were told what his mistake was at a pregame brunch in El Paso, and it was not a “crime”, but just a typical youngsters behavior for which he got caught. His harshest punishment, IMO, was being put on a Greyhound Bus back to Georgia. I’m glad he is on track to graduate with his class. I think his 1st suspension was for the same team rule. I would guess the bus ride gave him a lot of lonely time to mull things over and decide his little escapade costs too much. Maybe he will transfer somewhere and utilize his remaining year towards earning a Masters Degree and be prepared for a successful life. BTW, his mistake was no worse than what many of us did at his age. And no, I will not elaborate on what I/we were told, suffice it to say the individual telling us was high enough in the hierarchy to know and CPJ saw fit not to tell the world and I will respect that. So ya’ll ease up a bit on the harshness of your comments towards this young man.

BUT, being just a few short months ahead of him in life (I’ve only been in the “real world” since May 2011) I already know good and well that to make the same mistake twice is to ask for people not to trust you any longer. You show yourself to be unwilling to grow and be taught. I cry no tears for those who repeatedly defy their chosen authority figure (and a college coach is a chosen figure, not one you are born with.) Hopefully (after a painfully public humiliation) he now understands that he needs to abide by whatever set of standards and rules he signs onto in the next phase of life. I hope he gets his degree and goes on to be a more mature man than he was that week in El Paso.

Cryptozoology is one of the newest life sciences, and certainly one of the most thrilling. It is the study and pursuit of those animals which fall into one of three categories: 1) animals which have yet to be discovered and scientifically classified, 2) animals which are known, but thought to be extinct and 3) animals which are misidentified.

Good luck to Phil Smith. Getting a degree and then transferring to play at a different school in Fall 2012 looks like an excellent move for him – he gets to start fresh elsewhere.
I was interested to see that GT is looking at a kid from Australia. Now, if GT is looking for players from other countries/sports they may want to look at Jonny Wilkinson – he’ll solve all of their kicking woes and he is available.

UGA has had its share of rule breakers too. Glad to see CPJ is like CMR when it comes to repeat offenders. From what I saw the kid could play – GT will miss an experienced big ugly next year but rules are rules.

1 4 GT – Not to keep beating this thing to death about letting up on Phil – but – first the information you provided in your post @9:10 was made public knowledge while the incident was going on in El Paso (about Phil’s offense not being a “crime” – about the bus ride home – about both suspensions being for basically the same reason. So I’m not sure what to make of your comment that you heard this at a pre-game luncheon from a high source and won’t devulge either the source or “crime” – I don’t know that anyone really cares about either one. I suppose you get to keep your ego intact for having the inside scoop that makes you “the man” to go to for information – don’t really know.
You know, the thing is I’ve played a lot of sports – both high school and college – and when a team mate kept making mistakes over and over again – it had a definite affect on all of us from the perspective that we didn’t trust that guy to pull his share of the load when we really needed him to step up – so yeah, it stunk after awhile being his team mate and not being to do anything about it because the coach kept playing him for whatever reason. After college I joined the Army and when we had guys like this in the company who just kept screwing up time after time that made us all look bad – we held what is affectionately called a “blanket party” which means after hours and the lights were off – several of us would catch him in the bunk and pull a blanket down tight over him while the rest of the company beat the crap out of him. Needless to say it didn’t take too many blanket parties for him and everyone else to fall into line and work together for one common goal. Phil – while being a nice guy – and gets to finish his degree – was a rogue player even if it was minor stuff as you say. The point is there are rules for everyone to follow – including you and me – and if Phil felt bad when he screwed up – apparently he didn’t feel THAT bad because he kept doing it over and over – on the field and off. Sure I wish him well in the future – congrats on finishing the degree – but we’re talking football here and the ability to perform to the best of your ability when he hit the field – and he did not. So let’s not confuse the two – 1) The person – nice guy, nice family, good luck down the road and congrats on the degree and 2) The football player – poor performer – not a team player – constantly hurting team by on the field mistakes / penalties and off the field by suspensions that reflected on the team as a whole and disrupted cohesiveness of the offensive unit – what there was of it.

Give Me a Break. I do not have that large an ego. I do not consider myself, nor do I want to be known as “the guy to go to”. I was just relaying what happened at the brunch. The guy who told us about it was walking thru the room greeting people and making small talk and the incident under discussion came up in a rather soto voce manner. I will continue to respect CPJ’s decision not to make the infraction public knowledge even though others may not. I too know the value and necessity of trusting your teammates to do their job and how hurtful it can be when one team member falls short. I thought Phil Smith played pretty good mostly even though he had a knack for getting dumb penalties at the worst times. I have said enough. Think what you will. You might consider looking before leaping in the future. You ripped into me pretty hard without knowing me at all. But I’ve got thick skin and a hard head. See Ya. UOAD, it’s hard to tell yet if Alcatraz will require constant viewing, but the premise is this. When they shut down Alcatraz in 1963, the prisoners weren’t really transferred to other prisons. They were kept in limbo somewhere until now, and one by one they are all coming back (without having aged a day) and committing crimes, which the main characters try to solve. The shocker at the end of Monday’s episode was that one of the current-day investigators was also there in 1963, and she hasn’t aged a day either in all that time.

Finish your degree young man, learn from your mistakes and be thankful you have gotten a free education.
If you really desire, to go through all the hassle of another year of football and aspire to be a Pro., transfer to another school and play another year. If you are good enough, I would think you could get picked in the NFL supplemental draft and play in the future for the bucks then.
Consult with the folks that have guided you through your life and aided you in major decisions up to this point.
I would say that now, your life is just beginning so hopefully, whatever mistakes you made while at college, will not dull your future endeavors. Good luck to you.

I acually had a pretty lengthly reason for jumping to the conclusion I did and ripping 1 4 GT as well as the apology but all of that stuff is now laying in the bottom of the “filter bucket” on the floor of AJC somewhere.
I have apparently used the “handle” one of your friends uses and thereby caused further confusion. I have never posted with this “handle” before and guess I ought to find another one. I used this “handle” basically to express my initial frustration and made things worse between you and your friend – so for that I guess I need to apologize as well.

With all the people claiming to know things on these blogs, it’s usually a safe assumption that they really don’t know anything at all. 1 4 GT and I were in El Paso and met the president of the Alumni Association at the pre-game brunch. He told us what Smith had done, which had not been released to the media. It really was no biggie, but since it was his second infraction, he was suspended and sent home. So that is what 1 4 GT was referring to, and he wasn’t making any excuses for Smith’s behavior. We all hope he learned a life lesson from it.

I plan to buy a season ticket this year and hopefully meet some more good Techsters. I’m gone for now. Shopping & such. UGGGGHHHHHHHH GOOOOOOOOOOOOO JACKETS THWG THWNO

Supersize – Probably the one that either keeps me out of the most trouble – or the one I can remember. I’m getting to that point in life where I’m becoming more forgetful and the little things start to bother me more – so it’s a toss up.
1 4 GT – Thanks for understanding. It would be great if we could all meet up sometime during a home game. I haven’t missed one in several years thanks to good health and a wife that indulges me in the long drives from Daytona to Atlanta every home game weekend. Season tickets are a hard sell unfortunately – but maybe that will turn around in the next year or two after we have some of those awesome recruiting years like we read about so much on here – from other state school fans.
My background as a Tech fan began going on 70 years ago when my dad would take me to the games to watch Dodd, Butts, Bryant and the like coach – and Tech play when the south end zone was a horseshoe I went through those years as a young boy scout helping to direct fans to their seats and then grabbing a seat in the aisle to watch the game for free – to the point now that I’ve retired and have the time to share each of those Saturday afternoons (Thursday evenings) as a season ticket holder with my fellow fans – and live or die on almost every play. I’m not that great with the remembering and spitting out the statistics of all the coaches and players over the years – but I can remember the good times as well as the bad times and how things fell apart from the championship years to the point of almost dumping the football program. I’m in the process of reading a great book written by Adam Van Brimmer entitled “100 Things Yellow Jacket Fans Should Know Before They Die” – The Ultimate Resource for True Yellow Jacket Fans. It is extremely well written (published in 2011) and up to date. It covers the whole football program from the early days until the current time and I highly recommend the book to anyone who is interested in learning about Tech’s history and what has brought us to this point. Just thought y’all would like to know if you didn’t already.

Old Timer, you come up from Daytona for the games??? WOW, I am impressed. I only drive up from Augusta, and that’s tough enough sometimes. I’ll give you an email address (temporary one for initial contact) when I know we are both on here at the same time. That is how I have been able actually to meet so many of the other bloggers on here—-the real “Give Me a Break”, Delbert D., GT1971, UOAD, RAMBLEON!!!, juvenal, 1 4 GT, and a couple more whose names escape me right now. Maybe we can all get together prior to or during some games next season. I gather from what you said that you are in your 70s now; I am catching up fast….LOL

Eddie, some of us DO know what Phil did, and it was nothing bad at all, but it was a repeat offense, and he had to go.

Supersize – I’m 69 – Started going to games when I was 6 – so I guess 63 years is going on 70. Kinda like my momma used to say when it was time to get up to go to school – I was supposed to get up at 6AM and she’d call me at 5:30 telling me it was going on 6 and of course I’d think it was 5 till. Anyhow it’s a long time to pull for the White and Gold and shared the ups and downs. The get-together sounds good. We usually have a routine of eating at the Varsity about 1 1/2 hours before game time and then milling around with the north end zone crowd and watch the band as they come down the hill to the stadium or walking down to the book store. Seems like we should be able to fit a meet in there somewhere.
Yep – we drive up from Daytona and stay the weekend with relatives who live in the Chamblee area before heading back home on Monday AM. We take MARTA to the games when the relatives don’t want to go. Things sure have changed since back then when I was living a block from the Kensington MATRA station. This past year I felt so confident about Tech’s chances against UGA I went so far as to purchase a couple extra tickets for the relatives so we could all rejoice in the blood bath I was sure to happen. Unfortunately, it was our blood and the best thing I could think of to say about that day when it was over was – we all had good seats – the weather was good – and I can’t wait until I get back to the house for some home made Turkey Ala King left overs. We’ll surprise the Dogs next year!! Can’t wait!
