Georgia Tech-Maryland live blog

Greetings-

Writing from the third row media table at the Comcast Center (an arena whose naming rights I suppose my cable bill helps pay for) awaiting Maryland-Georgia Tech.

Not a wealth of thoughts, but just wanted to start up the live blog.

First, Maryland guard Terrell Stoglin may be limited because of a sore back. He will play, the Washington Post reported, but may not start. However much more he’s on the bench or not at 100 percent physically is an advantage for Tech. Stoglin is the ACC’s leading scorer and busted Colorado for 32 points earlier in the season.

Second, this is becoming a bit thematic, but rebounding will be crucial again for Tech. Jackets coach Brian Gregory and Maryland coach Mark Turgeon sound cut from the same rebounding-and-defense cloth. The Terrapins have out-rebounded the opposition in eight of the past nine and won all eight. Tech is 7-4 when it out-rebounds the opposition, 0-4 when it doesn’t. (1-0 when it’s even)

A matchup to note is center Daniel Miller against Maryland center Alex Len, a freshman from the Ukraine. Len sat out the first 10 games on an NCAA violation and is averaging 11.8 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.4 blocks. Miller’s numbers: 8.3, 6.8, 2.8.

Len has two inches on Miller at 7-foot-1, which will be a tougher-than-usual matchup for Miller. (and vice versa, I suppose)

Enjoy the game.

Ken – You have Comcast? I feel for you. I kicked them to the curb and went satellite. In my experience, Comcast is only supassed by TimeWarner as a cable company that is non-responsive and treats their customers with contempt.
I’ll be able to watch the game today thanks to my provider.

paul – coming strong. my experience with comcast has been kind of neutral. they keep calling me asking to upgrade to their bundle, though.

kind of an uneven start, but rebounding has been a positive. active on offensive glass.

Is the game on one of the Comcast channels or can we only get this on the radio?

I just found this game (on directv in WNC) on WMYA in Asheville, a channel I did not even know I had.

I finally got the game up on ESPN360. What was the deal with us having 6 men on the court?

GT played hard – as did MD – but it’s tough to win when you shoot 33%

Play some zone? There was nothing wrong with GT’s defense – the problem was down at the other end.

Use to losing BB games, but I do think Gregory will turn this thing around.
This team actually has plays they run; just did not shoot well today.
Things will get better. They actually had a chance to pull it out.

These are Hewitt’s left-over players. Hewitt recruited track stars – not bball players. None of them understand the 1st fundamental rule of bball – shooting the ball through the hoop! Let’s hope Gregory recruits players that actually can shoot the ball AND make free throws!

Tech would have won if I was still the coach.

With Gregory being the wonder boy coach who can walk on water, shouldn’t he be able to teach Hewitt’s track stars to play fundamental basketball? Stop with the Hewitt hate, it only makes us look like sore losers.

Ugly performance. Hard to believe we have fallen so much since Hewitt had us in NAT’l championship game 7 years ago. I like Gregory, but do not ever expect him to get us back to title game again. Let’s have realistic expectations.

I like how we are playing. They have real assistant coaches on the bench, and it doesn’t look like a fancy dress contest for the head coach’s posse. Wish we could be better on offense, but this group has never been a house of fire on offense. Under Hewitt they couldn’t rebound, they are still physically weak, but they are doing the fundamentals correct and are in the right places. The free throws are improving, couldn’t get any worse.

I think Gregory is trying to make guys ,like Hicks, enforcer,s not sure that works, but lets wait and see, if not he will recruit some head knockers count on it. It will take time to change the style and Maryland clumped down on Rice and Udofia, we could have use some physicality. Miller was beat up under the basket getting very little off the boards on offense and going weak to the hoop when challenged.

All and all the ACC is better this year. The fun is coming back watching them and these four new coaches will add a lot to the game. Bring in Syracuse and Pitt, you are back talking about the elite league in basketball with Tech being competitive. This style play will bring the juice back into the new gym that has been missing for so long. Watch the energy Gregory shows on the bench, he is playing the game with his guys and when he has his real guys out there he will be a hand full.

Fundamentals of basketball are taught at a very young age and developed as you get older. You can’t teach 19 year olds how to shoot all of a sudden. Hewitt recruited street-ball athletes, not freckled-faced Oklahomans who spend every free minute in their driveway shooting balls through basketball hoops mounted to their homes.

UGA=Yawn you are very right. Seems to me higher education does itself a disservice in bringing street thugs into something they have no clue nor respect of what it is about. The country has become idiot worshipers which is exactly what we don’t need right now. We have and will always have idiots in this country we just don’t need to let them lead us because they are freaks. Now the same kid that has no respect for the system, and why should he, has no respect for the game either. Not only have we compromised the bar of education, we have compromised the game for cheap entertainment and money.

The last two comments show the mentality and the racial mindset of the Tech fans who post on this blog. Stop trying to use code words for your racism.

Sad, there is nothing racist about what was said except to a racist reader. There are plenty of good, athletic, intelligent black kids who play basketball AND want an education, and there are plenty of thugs who could care less about education or rules. There are also plenty of white kids who fall into both categories. Tech has had their share of both. Salley, Joseph, Dalrymple, Scott, Oliver, and quite a few others were all black and attended class and abided by the rules and contributed to Tech’s success. And there were several white kids who didn’t contribute squat to the team or the school. Facts are facts. You are racist yourself if you can’t accept those facts.

“street-ball athletes”??
I must have missed something – GT’s best player (tattoos and all) is the priviledged son of a millionaire.

Paul, you’re killing them with facts and they only want to repeat the GTJT talking points. The only point that I agree with is the assistant coach talking point. The only coaches from Hewitt’s last staff who are currently employed are Hewitt and Darryl LaBarrie. Both are winning at their current schools but let some on here and the hive tell it LaBarrie was only hired to help him become a coach. Nevermind that he coached at two other D1 schools before coming back home to GT. Of course their typical response will be that assistant coaches don’t make a difference yet it was a hive battle cry for years.
