Greetings-
A few notes about Demaryius Thomas‘ breakout game for the Denver Broncos in their 29-23 playoff win over Pittsburgh Sunday.
- He set an NFL record for highest yards-per-reception average in a playoff game (minimum three catches) at 51.0 yards. He had 204 yards on four catches. The previous record was 46.3, held by Harold Jackson (Los Angeles Rams vs. Minnesota Vikings, 1974).
- Thomas, in fact, never had a better yards-per-catch game at Tech in any of his five 100-yard games. That would be his 25.4 yards-per-catch game (127 yards on five catches) against Georgia in 2009.
- His 80-yard touchdown catch on the first play of overtime produced the fastest end to an overtime game in NFL history, playoff or regular season, 11 seconds, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It was also the longest touchdown pass play in an overtime playoff game.
- He accounted for 64.6 percent of quarterback Tim Tebow’s 316 passing yards.
- Thomas’ performance came against the defense ranked No. 1 in the league in total defense and pass defense.
Some quotes from the Denver Broncos’ website:
“It is amazing because I haven’t played explosive like I did in college in a long time. To come out and make plays tonight, and win a playoff game, is just amazing.”
On the game-winning play:
“We were on the sideline and talking about it before we even went out there on the field and we were like, ‘We are going to run this play and all you have to do is beat the corner.’ They said, ‘All you have to do is cross the safety’s face,’ and I was walking to the line and saw the safety come down and I knew, at that time, the play that we had called, the only person I had to beat was the corner. I crossed his face and I knew the middle of the field was wide open.”
On his emotions:
“It feels good. Like I was saying earlier, I have been through a lot of ups and down – injuries and stuff. I was on the field, off the field and hadn’t felt great until the past four weeks. To be able to go out and do some of the things I did tonight, it feels great because I could be the big-play receiver that they drafted me to be.”
Broncos coach John Fox:
“He’s a young player that missed a lot of time early this season, and he missed a lot of time a year ago for that fact. He’s just going to get better. I think the more you get in these spots and the more you get these opportunities, the better he gets. He’s a very talented, young player that I think showed some of that tonight.”
Broncos defensive end Elvis Dumervil:
“He was huge. The big plays he made – he’s been working all year. He’s been banged up and he persevered through all that. I’m so happy for him. That was big, big, big, big for us.”

Hill is no Demaryius Thomas, at least not at this point in his skills development. Another year of college ball would help greatly in his chances to make it in the nfl.

Calvin Johnson and Bay Bay Thomas, the two best receivers in the NFL are both products of the oft criticized Georgia Tech passing game. Look for Stephen Hill to get a lot of mileage just because of where he went to school and learned to plaly WR.. Who is the next big great receiver to attend Georgia Tech?

Calvin and Demaryius both making it happen this weekend. Why wouldn’t a top flight reciever want to come to Tech? If you can catch the ball (are you listening Stephen Hill?), you will be thrown to and a significant contributor to the Tech offense. CPJ wants to throw the ball, but someone has to catch it. It’s great to see the former Jackets have a huge weekend.

Just like Cremins made Tech one of the top 2-3 destinations for shooting guards, TECH is now in the elite group for receivers. Honestly, until the last play in the Denver game last night, I never realized how fast Thomas is. But if you have kept up with Denver recently, you will note that Tebow is throwing to Thomas constantly. Hill will get a shot but he has to develop tremendously before he will become an NFL threat. Calvin and Damarius left Tech ready to step on the field.

You have give Stafford a lot of credit. Look at Detriot now vs where they were two years ago. Everyone know that Staff was the real deal and he’s showing it. The amazing point is that UGA could not win a nat champ with Staff, AJ Green and Moreno. All pros.

IMO – Stafford is tough and has a really strong arm. However, his accuracy is not at the elite level. Not on a consistent basis.
Watch the first Bears – Lions game in Detroit (MNF). Cutler was under seige and still delivered accurately. Stafford missed a lot. Even if he completed a pass, it was often behind the receiver or on the wrong side. Lions won, but that game was revealing.

D Thomas played 3 seasons at GT. 2 of those were spent blocking in GT’s “high school” offense (i.e. 2009 – 46 receptions, 1154 yds, 8tds).
Wow! So, UGA naysayers, and WnE, how in the holy he*l did D Thomas get drafted??
In fact, how did any of the 2011 top 5 WRs get drafted when none of them went to an “S..E..C” school (Johnson-GT, Welker-TxTech, Cruz-UMass, Fitzgerald-Pitt, Smith-Utah)

@ Paul In NH, the Dan Patrick Show this morning timed that kickoff from 1980 and it was 13 seconds from the time he caught the ball until he ran into the end zone.
As for Stafford being inaccurate from previous commenters, remember this is the first season he has actually stayed healthy. As a Lions fan who is not a Georgia fan, I’m looking forward to the future.
is anyone actually stupid enough to type their real email address in the comments?
January 9th, 2012
1:33 pm
@ Paul in NH, Thomas got a head start by the clock not starting due to the kickoff being a touchback. When the ball was snapped there were the full 15 minutes on the clock, vs. the Bears-Lions game where the clock started as soon as the guy started running the kick back.
So in other words, Thomas got about a 35-40 yard head start on the kick returner from your game. Hence, a faster ending to the game.

Why would my head explode?
I have said on numerous occasions that Bay-Bay was drafted HIGH to the NFL due to being 6-3 235lbs. and running a 4.38 in the forty, NOT because CPJ is some kind of Offensive genius.
Bay-Bay and Dwyer and Nesbitt have already said on more than one occasion that if CPJ were the HC at GT when they came out of HS then they WOULD NOT have signed with GT.
Two guys that played their HC FB here in the Great State of Ga. that are 6-3 235lbs. and 6-5 235lbs. respectively that had great performances in the playoffs, AND YET the GT fanbase is somehow trying to “boot-strap” their playoff successes to Coach Kung Fu Panda that didn’t recruit EITHER PLAYER, and would NEVER sign with GT if CPJ were the HC when they were coming out of HS.
If both of these GA. HS recruits played so well in the NFL playoffs, then WHY is Coach Fish Fry recruiting so heavily in friggin’ North Carolina instead of Ga.?
The GT fanbase is so mentally FRAGILE that they are REACHING at every possibility to try an validate to themselves that CPJ is the right guy for GT, this only proves that deep down inside many GT Fans indeed agree with ME, but are somehow trying to convince themselves that I am wrong.
This weekend’s NFL playoff games mean nothing for GT & CPJ going forward recruiting wise, if they did then where are our WR Recruits that rival a Julio Jones or A.J. Green that were the nos. 1 and 2 HS Recruits at WR that went on to be the #1 & #2 College WRs and then the #1 & #2 NFL Rookie WRs.
I guess now we can call him “Bootstrap Paul Johnson” since the GT boot-licking-toadies are now trying to to bootstrap the successes of players he DIDN’T Recruit to his gimmicky Offensive system.
Ha-Ha………..”Boostrap Paul Johnson”, you putzes are making this too easy for me!

You’re the idiot!
Coaches have “free movement” with their careers, but players have to sit out one-year and run the risk of losing an opportunity to get more “Film” i.e. game time to show NFL scouts and this hurts their draft prospects, and in turn hurts their chance to get more money via the biggest signing bonus possible.
Also, D. Thomas had already used a RS, so transferring would have hurt him even more than the other 2 guys.

From Mr. Stein and subwaydomer:
It is not CUSTOMARY or NORMAL to cyberstalk recruits.
Why are we talking about this? Well, because of that “gray” area, people actually think it’s acceptable to interact with recruits via social networks. They think it’s OK to try and get involved with some 17 or 18 year old high school student. They think it’s OK to try and get involved in the lives of kids. This is definitely not “OK.”
People, mostly grown men, spend their days trying to contact potential “program changing” high school athletes. Most of these attempts are “harmless” in their minds, but at the root of situation lays the problem. They justify talking to a 17 year old on the internet because they are offering, “wisdom,” words of encouragement, and of course advise on where these kids should attend college. It’s all innocent and good natured- right?
Wrong. Because it is acceptable in their eyes, it is also “acceptable” to chastise, warn, threaten, and downright get nasty with these recruits when someone else’s child makes a decision about their life that they don’t like. This, of course, is why social media has become a threat to college football- because it is not right to try and get involved in these kids lives.

@Hank Saye, Did G. Keil change his commit from LSU to tech ? or did J. Winston switch from Florida state to tech? Went to rivals.com , scout.com espn no tech qbs on the roster or being recruited this year listed .
Is Lemay transferring from Georgia he was the highest rated QB recruit from N.C. last year.Or is Nick Marshall transferring from Georgia.?
If you’re speaking of Lee , not nationally ranked or the kid from switched his commit from Bama those aren’t highly ranked QB recruits good athletes but most likely WR or DB anywhere but tech.
No Thomas and Johnson would’ve had not gone to tech if Pj was recruiting them. This is PJ 5th recruiting class, not a WR on board yet this year.

I believe WnE is actualy correct about Bay-Bay, Dwyer, and Nesbitt. I can’t point to a particular source but I did hear they wouldn’t have come if they’d known Tech would be running the option. Whether those players would have signed or not is moot, that no players of that caliber have signed in 5 years is a valid point.Pj service academy offense isn’t attracting the elite athletes or football players that previous coaches were able to recruit.

One thing is obvious. Relatively speaking Johnson got more out of Thomas than Gailey ever did out of Calvin. If I’m not mistaken, Kevin Cone, another Wide Receiver from GA Tech was on the Atlanta Falcons 53 man squad at the end of the season as well, so the premise that wide receivers can’t make it to the NFL coming from Paul Johnson’s offense is a crock.
Demaryious Thomas had an opportunity to transfer from Tech when the coaching change happened, but he chose to stay with the program and work within the new system. How did it work out for him? He was the first Wide Receiver taken in the First Round of the NFL Draft that season. Enough said.

Stafford throws too many INTS in big games. Especially in the 2n half. he done that at UGA and has done it in Detroit. That is why UGA did not win the NC when he was a junior. He left early and so did Moreno. Green was not part of it except as a true freshman and was not much of a factor. Had Stafford and Green stayed with Green as a sophomore, it would have been interesting, especially if the defensive guys stayed too. People forget, UGA lost a LOT of players to the NFL early and had some key injuries. People say how did UGA not win the NC with them. 2 reasons. LSU got to play for it instead of UGA one year and the next year UGA did not have the talent to win it but was “awarded” the preseason #1 ranking for being snubbed and having to go thrash undefeated Hawaii the year before but anyone who knew the team knew that the team was weaker! it was just a bone since UGA did not get a chance to play for the NC. Then Moreno and Stafford and others left early. That is why. Had their been a playoff system of any type UGA would have beaten LSU or Ohio State and won it all. UGA was unstoppable the wnd half of that season and had the same record as LSU but LSU got the the nod and we get an undeserving preseason ranking that set a weaker UGA team up for failure and unfair criticism by the ignorants….The year UGA played Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl, UGA was the best team in the country and would have beaten any team in the country easily…..

Well, I’m not sure why what I typed was blocked, but GT79, somebody addressed that earlier. That earlier game, the clock started as soon as the return man touched the ball, and it took 13 seconds. In Sunday’s game, there was no return on the kickoff, so the clock didn’t start till Tebow snapped the ball. From that point until the touchdown took 11 seconds.

Coaching changes have no effect on an athletes ability to transfer unless there is probation involved.
Thomas had already redshirted.Nesbitt chose to stay and it cost him major $$ . He would have been playing safety at UGA from day 1.Dwyer would’ve been drafted higher if he had played in pro style offense.Steelers said they would have to teach him how to play RB after playing in the service academy offense.
