Greetings-
Just about an hour from kickoff (now 2:21 p.m. EST). I’m getting pretty intrigued to see how this game unfolds. Not having seen Utah, it’s kind of hard to get a grasp, but I think a lot of it comes down to two things. First, can Georgia Tech move the ball on Utah’s run defense, especially without Omoregie Uzzi not starting (as has been announced). Shaquille Mason will start; it’s undetermined if Uzzi will get snaps. B-back David Sims will play some, but how much is also not clear. Expect Preston Lyons to get plenty of snaps in his final game.
Second, can Tech stop John White? I imagine Utah will be more than content to pound the Jackets with Smith it’s the Utes are able. Worth watching – the sledgehammer blocking of fullback Shawn Asiata.
Other items of interest:
1. Wind is blowing pretty briskly towards the open end zone. I’m not sure of direction; if you’re watching on television, it’ll be the end zone on the right.
2. Steven Sylvester’s parents Roderick and Barbara are at the game with their other son Roderick Jr., completing a pretty remarkable feat. They have attended every one of their son’s Tech games in his career, home, away and bowl. They drove to this one with the families of Tevin Washington and Jamal Golden. Mr. Sylvester reports it took about 22 hours from the family’s home in McDonough, a pretty quick clip.
“I told Tevin’s dad he missed his calling,” Roderick Sylvester said. “He should have been a truck driver or something.”
The Sylvesters’ motivation to attend every game came from Roderick’s military service, from which he retired in 2006, which kept him from attending many of Steven’s games.
“You can’t make up for lost time, but I promised Steven as long as I’m healthy, you can look up (in the stands) and know we will be there,” he said.
3. Utah will be short two starters, left guard Miles Mason and and defensive tackle Dave Kruger. The Utes rotate a lot of defensive linemen, so that shouldn’t be as big a factor, but Mason’s injury may.
That’s about all I’ve got for now. I can’t say I’ve been to a wide variety of stadiums, but this is one of the more memorable settings. It’s set in the Franklin Mountains, which overlook the stadium beyond one end zone, and the visiting stands are carved into the side of a rocky hill.

Apparently Tech sold around 2,500 tickets to fans attending, and another 6,000 + (including a couple by me) were either bought or donated by Tech to the soldiers of Fort Bliss. So Techs section should be, full, hopefully the heroes will support tech. Apparently utah only sold 1,500 tix to fans attending , and none to the military. Proud of Tech for doing that.

We have a very fine coach in Paul Johnson as he continues to have a winning record. We don’t beleive all the off week regular season opponent losses and bowl game losses will ever offset his overall record, in their figuring out his very little defense and his high school offense.

5150, very true, and all of the RSs from this year have all spent time in the weight room and will continue to do so. Jay Finch came to tech at 255 lbs, he’s now 280-285 and getting bigger. I hate freshman eligibility for that reason. All of these kids need to come in and grow up into young men.

@jackets/packers: My thoughts are that nobody that saw tevin would really believe that he was the answer. Why not give “fumble” Days some more opportunities throughout the year? Or don’t redshirt Vad from the very beginning and let him get some reps, so he can step right in in 2012. Im happy with getting 3 full hears out of vad, i dont need 4. We played a VERY soft schedule in the beginning that would have given plenty of chances for some other guys to get some reps.

You can talk about CPJ and Groh all you want (and I have plenty of times) but the bottom line is this team doesn’t have any playmakers. Championship teams (or even teams that can win a bowl game) have players that can come up with a play when it is needed. Who on this team do you want the ball to go to when we need a play? Who on this defense do you know is going to come up with the big play when you need it?

Utah’s QB has NEVER had a 200 yd. passing Day this year one in his entire College Career, so basically Utah was playing with one arm tied behind their backs, and the GT D was still spotty at best.

I’m sorry but I can’t keep supporting this coach. To go so ultra conservative when you have a 2 TD lead late in the 4th quarter and then lose the game in OT. I am ready for a change. Thanks for beating UGA on your first try and the ACC championship (in question) all looks good but that was not with player you recruited CPJ and what I have seen since has been nothing more than mediocre.

PJ is here for six more years. We can’t afford to get rid of him until we pay off Hewitt. He is going to stick with rag arm Tevin next year because he is stubborn so next year is another 7 or 8 win season. Just be prepared to go to medicre bowls and lose for a while. Basketball will continue to get worse since we had to settle for a cheap coach. And baseball will be ranked in the top 5 and then choke in the post season at home as long as Danny Hall is here. Just support the women’s teams. The men’s teams are in rough shape for the next few years

Tech had a chance until they quit using the shotgun. Notice when they reverted to the los formation Utah began to tackle them right at the los like a cowboy tackling a calf and roping it right out of the starting gate. CPJ wanted his los offense to win and showcase his playbook he designed and it does not. He must be told by the Tech AA to leave Tech before next season. He is a terrible head coach.

Paul Johnson sucks!! He lost this game with hios crappy play calling. I am so tired of hearing he is a master play caller, says who. GT is the bigeest bunch of losers I have ever seen. It’s like watching the three stooges play football. The O had the ball 3 times up 24-10 and did absolutely nothing, good teams score and put the game out of reach. Fire this guy and get a real coach!!

The should have reviewed the scoring play. I don’t think they would have overturned it but they could have took a look. I reviewed on my DVR in slowmotion and I think it was a good call. If you want to blame anyone blame the defensive players.they should have stopped him.

This one hurts. Guys have to make plays. Kickers have to make kicks. DBs have to stop a 25 yd. td on 3rd and long. But coaches have to make the right calls: The D has to be looking for a draw like that. (That’s not on the players, that’s on the coaches). Frustrating loss, very frustrating.

The problem is the offensive line. Has been for 4 years. When a team cannot block the front 7 or 8 in the 4th quarter the problem is the OL.
Maybe, maybe a couple of years from now when the sophmores and freshmen on this OL will be seniors and juniors Tech will be able to block a good defensive team in the 4th quarter.

That offense worked in 2008 when no one had seen it for 20 years. CPJ reached his peak in 2008 and 2009. The DC’s have caught up to his offense and know how to stop it now.

Paul Johnosn is one of the worst coaches I have ever seen. If he keeps Al Groh as DC he may be the worst coach in the history of college football. He is better than some high school coaches so I will give him that. Tech is terrible on defense. They are one of the worst tackling teams I have ever seen. The kicking game is awful. GA and GA Tech may have the worst special teams in the nation. If they don’t I would like to see who is worse. As long as Paul Johnson is the coach at tech they will be lucky anytime they finish above 500. He got lucky to win the ACC and no way that happens again. I really hate it for tech because they deserve better than what happened today.

Disappointing loss. I thought the young offensive line did much better than I expected. Shaq Mason made some impressive blocks. On defense, this was one of Drummonds better games. Seemed like a team effort to lose in the fourth quarter. Coaches and players both took a nap and let it go. The most disappointing aspect, for me, is it seemed the team was really well prepared this time despite the injuries and suspensions.
Anyway, I see some positives to build on for next year for a young team that did better than expected this season.
The loss hurts for now, but I’m already looking forward to next season. Wish Roddy Jones could have gone out on a high note.

Utah 30 GT 24 OT You can blame the coaches for this one. Second to the last drive of the game in regulation, instead of playing to win, coaches decided to play it safe and take time off the clock. It’s always a double edged sword and hurt GT more than Utah. Instead of letting the team ‘play to win’ they rolled the dice and lost! With a field goal kicker that couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn and continuing to force the ball up the middle with continued failure the coaches ensured Utah’s chance for a comeback! Always play to win, not roll the dice! Whenever you ‘play it safe’ your coaches undermine their players ability to win ‘on their own’…not on luck! Hey Techies – don’t take the bowl loss too hard – you went into the game with injuries and suspensions – trust me, we at UGA know how hard it is to win games when you are missing key players – we played without a backfield all year due to injuries and suspensions. It happens. Coach Johnson is what he is – just like Coach Richt. Don’t be in a hurry to run him out of town….coaching changes are almost always a bad move unless you have a real stinker at the helm – Coach Johnson has done a decent job with the talent he is able to get. Still, I thought you guys would have handled Utah after beating Clemson. If you want to get rid of anybody I think Groh should be under scrutiny – he just doesn’t have the horses to run the 3 – 4. I hope the Dawgs haven’t eaten too much turkey and ham over the break. See ya’ next year.

CPJ, are you still looking for your first bowl win!!!!! The way you coach you deserve to lose. Al, can’t you teach defensive backs like Thomas that he has to look at the ball, he cost the game. You never took my advice about recruiting a kicker off the soccer team. Way to go kickers 1 out 4, that not bad (ha ha) There is always next year. I have a suggestion, don’t win enough games, this way you will not go to a bowl game. Do you like that???? At least you won’t lose a bowl game. This finally did it for me and my season tickets. I will not get season tickets in 2012……as long as we keep our coaches…..

I would love for recruits in the state to know that with a good defense TECH would be winning or playing for the ACC title almost every year. I watched Tuitt(ND) blowing up on FSU the other night. I didnt like Gailey and now I dont like CPJ…WTF? Can we not hire someone who can win sometimes? 0-7 in bowl games, 1-10 vs Ugag. We had the best bowl winning percentage of ANY BCS team in the early 2000’s. Now we are a tertiary (3rd tier) team at best. Our coaches suck, BBALL and baseball included.

We can cry and moan all we want….bottom line is CPJ isn’t going anywhere any time soon unless he takes another job or resigns (neither of which is likely). His buyout right now would be the remainder of his contract…..5 years!!!! $2.44 for 2012, $2.51 for 2013, $2.59 for 1014, $2.67 for 2015, $2.75 for 2014, $2.83 for 2015, and $2.91 for 2016 (all figures rounded of course) for a total buyout of $18.7 Million shoudl we fire him right now.

I cannot believe the defensive coaching of this game. I haven’t been too sure about Al G. this year and one play made up my mind. The last TD pass to Utah’s #10 3rd and 17 or 19 and he left him covered man 2 man – twice… Come on! Even I know on a play like that you give the opposing team a short-mid open pass play – SHORT of the marker – Gee’s play a zone and keep everything in front of the Defense. The quarterback had been throwing crap passes all day and Al G. and the Jacket’s D give him the easy way out with a man in single coverage throwing a fade. Tech’s CB’ covering Utah’s #10 never looked back for both passes and was LUCKY he was able to get away with the hold the first time. Being a Tech fan and having to sit through the 4 pain staking years of Reggie B.seems to be happening again, but this time with the Defensive Coordinator. Congrats Tech players for playing a tough fought game; you all played well and have my respect, but Tech’s Defensive coaching of this game (especially the end) has made me nauseated. Change the defense leadership of this team . . . . please ! ! ! !

Utah is full of 2 and 3 star ( maybe 3 star) kids that listen to Coach and play hard. They do not have a slick O, nor a head cracking D or kicking game. They seem to play as a unit but they really have no talent but do ok in their lil boy football world.
Along comes Tech with 2 and some 3 star kids with a GENIUS COACH and a “legendary D coach Groh” and they simply get out hustled, out played and YES, WAY OUT COACHED. Tech with CPJ and Al Groh is in trouble. Please give them 10 more years.

Good post Casey. The play calling got a little conservative, but special teams killed us. One first down from a win. Oh well…. I lived through 1979 – 1983, or eleven wins in four seasons. If you had asked would I be happy at 8 and 5, I would have said yes, anytime! Just have to keep things in perspective. Lets finish a good recruiting class and get back at it next year. Go Jackets! 5150 I guarantee you I won’t stop pulling for the Jackets either. But you gotta admit, this is a really bad loss. I haven’t heard CPJs comments like WnE said he did, and sure you could say there’s a lot of things players could have done to make it better, but the fact is we were up 2 TD late and the play calling got really weird. I mean really weird. I have not been a fan of his many 4th down calls over the years (and sure they looked good before anyone knew anything about the guy’s tendencies). His late game coaching to me is his weakness. He does not manage the clock well…at all. One example – the Miami game this year at the end of the first half (I was at the game by the way). We’re going in for the score to make it a game and he calls time out to leave Miami about one minutes worth of time which they take advantage of to exploit our D and score to go up 21-10. There are other examples and maybe it’s not all his fault but he is anything but a genius in my book. Sorry

I hardly think it’s the coaches’ fault. Washington calls the majority of the offensive plays in real-time, CPJ just designs/modifies them when they dont work. But the actual play call before the snap is made by Tevin, not Johnson. Horrible, ultra-conservative play calling in the 4th quarter nonetheless.
Same goes for the defense. Did you notice the clueless looks on the faces of the LBs in that zone read defense of Groh’s? Just standing there. They were shocked/numbed with that last dive playcall. Sorry, but we don’t have the discipline or talent to win bowl games or beat uga.

There were plenty of things for Jacket fans to scratch their heads about in this game, but the strangest move to me was running the option right at the end of regulation. That put the ball on the hash. If you’re going to send a new kicker into the game (and you have a timeout in your pocket), why wouldn’t you just try to get the ball in the middle of the field to make it as easy as possible for him?

Fellow Tech fans, as yourself how the hell Utah won this game. Most people would say Groh, who’s defense is mediocre at best, but most people would be wrong. Al’s merely an inferior cog in the wheel of mediocrity. CPJ’s offense is the reason why Groh’s D is so pathetic. People talk about GT’s opponents having a hard time simulating the triple option in practice, but when your team runs the triple option, you in turn have to simulate a traditional offense. GT simply doesn’t have the athletes to go beyond what they are now…and it will never change with CPJ at the helm.

It’s true. When Tech finally ran some shotguns in the first half they were ahead eventually by 14. At the end they reverted to los formations that are archaic and obsolete football formations. CPJ is responsible for his arrogance in believing in los formations. Nobody anywhere agrees with him. I am a Tech grad and am glad I did not contribute to the Alum Roll Call for 2012. I have mentioned here often that CPJ must comform or else. It’s like a mental health professional giving a diagnosis for a patient. If the patient keeps misbehaving, knowledgeable observers will notice what is wrong with him. CPJ is the slowest learner I’ve ever seen. The experimentation with the shotgun was a success, and then low and behold he drops it in favor of the los formation. We have to get rid of him and find a shotgun coach.

We lost because of idiot playcalling in the last 8 minutes period.Someone needs to remind CPJ that he is no longer a genius.All we needed was one first down to run the clock out. That was embarrasing. We deserved toe because of the sorry play calling, which has nothing to do with the scheme.If you want a first down do not run a bunched formation and dive plays or quarterback draws.You could run these plays from a less compact formation. What an idiot.

Not buying a season ticket next year if Washington starts. Now he’s 1-8 in games as QB when we have entered halftime with a deficit, with the lone comeback win last year at home against Duke. What’s the point of sitting thru 4 qtrs when you know you’re gonna lose once you’ve given up a lead? #NotBuiltForComebacks

Call me crazy but I like blood from the family. We shoulda hired Mark Price for basketball – I don’t give a damn if he hasn’t head coached at Whodaheckcares U before. For football – I can live with an upstart. How about George Godsey – he’s been getting coaching experience at Central Fla. Let’s give him a shot. Anything but the CPJ TO at this point.

Makes too mu’ch sense Hairy Dawg…..I was screaming for a dive to the B-back a couple plays before when the DL’mem were sucking wind, and the D was sitting back in pass coverage.
Could’ve gained 10+ yds on a run and had a much easier FG attempt.

Yeah, I can – did you see Utah’s QB throwing the int directly to Tech’s LB? Or, how many passes were missed by a struggling backup QB; it sure as h@$l wasn’t Al G and the DEF coaching staff. The ends of games or when a team has the chance to put the other team away; are the critical calls that Al G. and staff just don’t seem to have the ability to make correctly.

Yeah 5150. you are right. Money rules. If we ain’t got it, can’t spend it. Who knows, we might get better next year but I still think CPJ is a problem long term. Even if we had a fiery QB, not sure if Vad is the guy or not, but a player can’t tell the coach how to call the game and CPJ showed his weakness today…again.

This is my first visit to a Tech blog. I see a lot of familiar names that post…..and give grief….on the UGA blogs. I’m not here to do that (well….maybe a little to GTBob). I actually wanted Tech to pull that one out. When it comes to bowl games, I don’t want to see any team with the word “Georgia” in it lose. I’m very disheartened. Congrats to the GT team that did at least show up to play. For Coach Johnson – you went very conservative (again!), your defensive coach is not cutting it and once again SPECIAL TEAMS COSTS US THE GAME.
I don’t think we can do better than Johnson, but dang he is pig-headed and doesn’t seem to care about defense or special teams. And dude, stop blaming the players. You have to take some responsibility and never do.

Techies, I know you are a little down so I won’t start kicking, but I do have some comments. Since CPJ has been at Tech, UGA fans have given him a hard time about his offense, I don’t think many of you will disagree with that right now. As for CPJ, his attitude reminds me of Jim Donnan, he is way too arrogant for the results he has furnished, so much to the point I don’t think he trust his assistant coaches to get the job done, just like Donnan. And the Groh hire, that was a stunner, I am nearly 60 years old and I can’t remember when he ever did anything worth getting hired as a DC at GT. But as teams see more and more of CPJ’s offense, it will become less and less effective, today was his best bowl game performance, but when it got to crunch time, it was stopped. He will always struggle in bowl games because of the time teams have to prepare for it, and there is a reason it is now a rariety in college football, paraity and defenses have gotten too fast for it to be effective like it was 30 years ago.

Tech had the better team, but Utah had the better head coach or offensive coordinator, whoever called the shotguns for them. You notice they used a shotgun on two plays to score in overtime. Tech signed off on shotguns with about the entire second half left. CPJ and anybody over him who allows him to stay at Tech are the culprits that bring depression to Tech students and alums. Perhaps Ratikovich provides Favors to LSU by keeping CPJ. Bud Peterson, the Tech prez, is also a player along with Ratikovich in keeping CPJ. Only somebody who didn’t want Tech to win would use los formations where the qb takes the snap right under the center at the los and gets immediately tackled, as opposed to shotgun snaps that keep the qb away from tacklers. Is there an AA, an Athletic Association, at Tech at all now or not?

That was really, really bad. Agree with the others in that CPJ went ultra conservative in the 4th and CAG was at a total loss with the game on the line. Glad the season is over – can’t take much more of Tevin. Probably a great kid but he is not a QB in this division. Need some serious changes next year but don’t have much hope in things getting better.

To the geniuses who think GT lost b/c Utah had so much time to prepare for GT’s offense … stop talking, and start selling what ever it is you’re smoking.
Utah had the #7 rushing D in the NCAA, and GT still got 323 yds rushing. GT had NO 100yd rushing game out of a B-back this year…unitl today, when the #7 RUSHING D in the NCAA had 30+ days to prepare to stop the run. And the 100yd rusher was a BACK-UP!
This game was lost b/c of:
- NO reliable FG kicker
- poor play calling by PJ & execution by TW on the 2 drives before the missed FG at the end of regulation

Not surprised about the outcome, naturally disappointed, but nothing has changed over the years’. Coaches like Bill Curry, Bill Lewis, Bobby Ross, George O’Leary, and Chan Gailey all had moderate success elsewhere after Tech. Bobby Dodd and Pepper Rodgers, were some really good coaches, but it was a different era in the schools that they played. My point is, Tech did well to win 8 games this season in the current environment and anything over that is a bonus. Folks complained when Johnson came, they complain now, and they’ll complain after he’s gone. Same was done with Curry, Lewis, Ross, O’Leary, and Gailey. Congrats Tech to a solid, respectable season.

I am glad that this happened in 2011….. and not like the wipe out at the Orange Bowl a couple of years ago.
Between travel, hotels, meals and tix, that’s about 10 grand down the rathole over the last 3 years, not to mention Holidays that have been sacrificed.
Paul Johnson needs to spend some time hanging out with Les Miles to learn how to ditch that conservative coaching philosophy.
I can take winning if we leave it all on the field, but this coaching philosophy is exactly what got Chan whacked. I just find it hard to believe that this coach can accept losing on these terms….. something that has become expected behaviour.
Wake up Paul Johnson! Even you can learn new tricks…… and adjusting your philosophy is a good starting point. If Patton were around, he would slap you up the side of the head. Remember “America love a winner……. and will not tolerate a loser” That rings just a true today as it did back in Patton’s day!
You have a chance to redeem yourself next year….. so do whatever you need to do….. go out in the woods, commune with Nature, climb the Mountain, see the Guru, just get it over with by next August and dump that losing philosophy!!!!

Johnson’s Tech bowl record is still perfect. Heck, the guy won the ACC with another coach’s players a few years back, not so much winning with his own, so there’s room to talk here. Will Tech fans finally take Paul “I’m too grumpy, so never question me” Johnson to the woodshed? Will they ever demand more than mediocre football and poor hoops at GT? Will they wake up from their Paul Johnson lovefest and realize he’s all talk and no action? It’s no fun to be a Tech fan these days, that’s for sure.
Football stinks unless you’re thrilled by an occasional upset (Clemson), or wins against other cupcakes (Kansas, MTSU), then the regular season ends with the yearly loss to Georgia. After that, comes the yearly bowl loss.
Basketball is a joke. (Mercer, Fordham, really?). The day after the Fordham loss, somebody from the ticket office called me and asked me to buy a ticket package for the home games at Phillip’s. Yeah, no thanks.
Baseball, meh, who cares? Decent regular season then an earlier expected exit in the tournament.
Too bad golf isn’t a spectator sport.

I love CPJ and what he’s brought to the program, but the honeymoon is officially over for Tech fans. Here’s the recipe for CPJ’s success moving forward… and for his remaining tenure: Give up some of the play calling to the guys upstairs or, when we have a confident QB, allow some audibles. CPJ needs to coach more big picture, e.g. making sure defensive strategy is consistent with overall game plan. Al Groh’s got to go. Invest in special teams. Find a kicker. Hire one from Venezuela if necessary. Beat uga 2 consecutive years. THWG!!!!

This season and loss is on Paul Johnson. For one why not let Vad Lee play. Why stay with a qb who has proven he isn’t that great and will be a senior next year. I agree with a lot of other posters. Paul Johnson is as arrogant as they come. He is too stubborn to let a true freshman run his offense.
I played for Donnan and Richt and I can tell you Donnan is just like Paul Johnson. He is the type of person who thinks his SH-T doesn’t stink.

We were flat out coached. No two ways about it. Johnson is inept. He had plenty of chances to win and blew it. Why is this guy on the payroll! He got way too conservative with the Tech lead in the fourth quarter. His system doesn’t work in the bowl games. That’s a system that’s predictable and it won’t change until he’s gone.

Why no quick slants? Hell, throw a tight end into the game once in while. The TO is OK, but it’s too predictable. I wouldn’t scrap it all together, but let’s add some variation. If Tevin can’t throw, put him on the bench.
Defense? Groh’s gotta go. The Dbacks look like they’re coached not to look for the ball, then complain about a no call for offensive interference. The whole defense misses way too many tackles. They look like they’re coached to “chip” the ball carrier first, then count on teamates to make the tackle. They don’t have the right kids to play a 3-4. So play something you’ve got right kids for.
Special teams – total disaster.
All in all, it’s just lousy football.

The game that I especially love is when Ohio State and mouthy Kirk Herbsteit got pistol whipped by a fine 9-2, 10-2 UGA team led by Coach Goff. They had Robert Smith, a supposed Hesiman and mouthy QB Kirk. 21-7 it was and it really was not that close.

Actually they were in third place USC was ineligible to play in the PAC 12 championship game.Loosing to UCF was bad ,but the Dawgs never showed up . To all the Tech fans that want PJ fired, you may want to think twice because the gras is not always greener on the other side. I understand CPJ is the head coach, but he did finish with a winning season. You do not see Texas fans calling for their coach to be fired. Mack Brown last couple of seasons have not been that good. I say we keep PJ and bring in a new DC or DL coach. He is consistent with putting up 21-24 points a game. If you ask any good defensive team they wouldtell you “they would rather have a offense that put up 21-24 points a game no matter the offense they run, than have to stay on the field all day trying to win games.” Ask Ray Lewis, he begged Trent Dilfer and the offense to just put up 10 points a game.

Got to give the players kudos. We had some major players out due to injury and stupidity but the ones left on the field did not give up. Sure, would have liked to have won, but that’s why you play the game.
For the most part, GT overachieved this season. Started strong, but tanked (as usual) as the season progressed and the teams got tougher. We definitely need play makers and I’m not sure Johnson is capable of bringing them in. (Especially when he tends to throw players under the bus.) I think (hope) he gets extra pressure to expand his offense to include short passes, start Vad Lee, get a decent kicker and beef up our lines.

A couple of comments. Whenever you play not to loose rather than play to win, guess what you are probably going to loose, With all the aggressive play calling I have seen with Paul Johnson over the years, he absolutely folded today. Cannot make a first down the last two possessions cost us the ball game.
