Georgia Tech-Utah game thread
Greetings-
Just about an hour from kickoff (now 2:21 p.m. EST). I’m getting pretty intrigued to see how this game unfolds. Not having seen Utah, it’s kind of hard to get a grasp, but I think a lot of it comes down to two things. First, can Georgia Tech move the ball on Utah’s run defense, especially without Omoregie Uzzi not starting (as has been announced). Shaquille Mason will start; it’s undetermined if Uzzi will get snaps. B-back David Sims will play some, but how much is also not clear. Expect Preston Lyons to get plenty of snaps in his final game.
Second, can Tech stop John White? I imagine Utah will be more than content to pound the Jackets with Smith it’s the Utes are able. Worth watching – the sledgehammer blocking of fullback Shawn Asiata.
Other items of interest:
1. Wind is blowing pretty briskly towards the open end zone. I’m not sure of direction; if you’re watching on television, it’ll be the end zone on the right.
2. Steven Sylvester’s parents Roderick and Barbara are at the game with their other son Roderick Jr., completing a pretty remarkable feat. They have attended every one of their son’s Tech games in his career, home, away and bowl. They drove to this one with the families of Tevin Washington and Jamal Golden. Mr. Sylvester reports it took about 22 hours from the family’s home in McDonough, a pretty quick clip.
“I told Tevin’s dad he missed his calling,” Roderick Sylvester said. “He should have been a truck driver or something.”
The Sylvesters’ motivation to attend every game came from Roderick’s military service, from which he retired in 2006, which kept him from attending many of Steven’s games.
“You can’t make up for lost time, but I promised Steven as long as I’m healthy, you can look up (in the stands) and know we will be there,” he said.
3. Utah will be short two starters, left guard Miles Mason and and defensive tackle Dave Kruger. The Utes rotate a lot of defensive linemen, so that shouldn’t be as big a factor, but Mason’s injury may.
That’s about all I’ve got for now. I can’t say I’ve been to a wide variety of stadiums, but this is one of the more memorable settings. It’s set in the Franklin Mountains, which overlook the stadium beyond one end zone, and the visiting stands are carved into the side of a rocky hill.

As an ACC fan..it does suck in football!!!
I wonder why ACC schools do better in spring sports like Baseball, tennis, golf! I think we all know the answer!

Man, Auburn is like really bad and they are smoking UVa. How bad is the ACC? I mean really, UVa had a pretty impressive season in the ACC. They even beat the mighty Yellow Maggots. I’m just stunned by how bad the ACC really is. They should lose the AQ status. I suggest the BCS take away the ACC’s AQ status and give it to the MAC.

Well, Virginia did have the 4th best record in the ACC and ended up 2nd in their division. They also beat three of the teams you listed. (FSU, GT and Miami)

GT should hire Trooper Taylor as a head coach to replace Coach Fish Fry. Trooper would fit right into the North Avenue environment and recruit the type of playas Tech needs to be relevant.

I didn’t know they had beaten Miami and FSU. That is a surprise to me. I knew they had beaten GT and had lost to VT, UNC, and NC State. But to beat FSU and Miami, I can see why people are thinking they are one of the better ACC teams. I don’t think Auburn will want any more of Clemson though. That game Clemson won going away. I mean like outscored Auburn 31-0 down the stretch. I saw that game on TV.

For all of you Paul Johnson and Al Groh fans—get use to it, Pj has to be one of the worst play callers in the 4th Quarter and Groh cannot stop a flea from getting on a dog. Its really getting embarrasing now to be associated with Paul–keep running up the middle, even though Utah has adjusted their defense-Johnson. Glad we play Duke, Kansas and MTSU or we would go winless with this stupid offense and can Washington try to pass instead of running every play–just hope he gets hurt next fall and cant play anymore

This is all on CPJ. 14 point lead, 4 possessions of the ball…didn’t even sniff a 1st down…played like Gaily, NOT TO LOSE!!! guess what, you LOST!!! Offensive genius, yeah right…run for 226 tards in first have then what 60 last half. Utah made adjustments and we kept running into the strength of the defense, no mis-direction, no first downs, no nothing but another loss…where was our offensive genius making the adjustments we needed to make…maybe I and a lot of other Tech people were wrong. Maybe CPJ needs to go back coaching “little boy” football. Hey coach fix your special teams that have been a joke sincwe you got here and fix your damn offense because it was not your defense that lost this game today, it was the soeey play calling in the last half and playing “not to lose”. WAKE UP!!!!!

What clearly happened here is that both the defense and offense quit after getting a 2 TD lead. Congratulations to Utah for showing Tech what winners do when they are behind. The UTES were determined to win and stepped it up 4 notches in the 4th. Tech quit. I hope this team posts a banner in the locker -room that says ” WE QUIT IN THE 4th QTR “. They should be tattooed with that phrase.
