Georgia Tech-Utah game thread

Greetings-

Just about an hour from kickoff (now 2:21 p.m. EST). I’m getting pretty intrigued to see how this game unfolds. Not having seen Utah, it’s kind of hard to get a grasp, but I think a lot of it comes down to two things. First, can Georgia Tech move the ball on Utah’s run defense, especially without Omoregie Uzzi not starting (as has been announced). Shaquille Mason will start; it’s undetermined if Uzzi will get snaps. B-back David Sims will play some, but how much is also not clear. Expect Preston Lyons to get plenty of snaps in his final game.

Second, can Tech stop John White? I imagine Utah will be more than content to pound the Jackets with Smith it’s the Utes are able. Worth watching – the sledgehammer blocking of fullback Shawn Asiata.

Other items of interest:

1. Wind is blowing pretty briskly towards the open end zone. I’m not sure of direction; if you’re watching on television, it’ll be the end zone on the right.

2. Steven Sylvester’s parents Roderick and Barbara are at the game with their other son Roderick Jr., completing a pretty remarkable feat. They have attended every one of their son’s Tech games in his career, home, away and bowl. They drove to this one with the families of Tevin Washington and Jamal Golden. Mr. Sylvester reports it took about 22 hours from the family’s home in McDonough, a pretty quick clip.

“I told Tevin’s dad he missed his calling,” Roderick Sylvester said. “He should have been a truck driver or something.”

The Sylvesters’ motivation to attend every game came from Roderick’s military service, from which he retired in 2006, which kept him from attending many of Steven’s games.

“You can’t make up for lost time, but I promised Steven as long as I’m healthy, you can look up (in the stands) and know we will be there,” he said.

3. Utah will be short two starters, left guard Miles Mason and and defensive tackle Dave Kruger. The Utes rotate a lot of defensive linemen, so that shouldn’t be as big a factor, but Mason’s injury may.

That’s about all I’ve got for now. I can’t say I’ve been to a wide variety of stadiums, but this is one of the more memorable settings. It’s set in the Franklin Mountains, which overlook the stadium beyond one end zone, and the visiting stands are carved into the side of a rocky hill.

I don’t want to see another GT alumni assn mailer begging me for support. Until the athletic department dissolves, my degree is cheapened every football season. I’d rather watch my bulls service the cows than see another Tech football game. At least that’s $$ in the bank.

Huge pass down field. Trotter with a great pass to the UVa 5

I’ve been amazed at how much attention Ken’s blog gets from UGA fans. Some of them even say GT is irrelevant. That’s not what 28 pages of repeating themselves says.

Look on the bright side, you are now Yellow Jackets. But before you were mature Yellow Jackets, you were maggots. However, after the Fiasco in El Paso, you may have gone back to that pre-maturity larvae state of being a maggot, lest I digress.

Its more fun running smack on the Tech Blog.Michigan State spews all of their hate at Michigan ,they could care less about the Dawgs. Michigan State thinks the BCS screwed them out of the Sugar Bowl and gave their spot to Michigan.

My thoughts for what they are worth.

CPJ is as many of you say – arrogant & stubborn but the most telling issue – he can’t recruit. Not because he is dumb but because he has never really had to recruit. Georgia Southern was loaded when he took over. Georgia Southern gets a ton of very good but undersized players that fall through the cracks of the D1 schools without having to beat the bushes. Navy – I bet he didn’t recruit anyone. Service Academies get disciplined and motivated kids by the very nature of their existence.

Combine CPJ’s lack of recruiting skills and his old school offense and GT is doomed – they will never fill the roster with the type of players needed in D1. As many have pointed out Groh is at a distinct disadvantage having to prepare his defense for typical college offenses when he doesn’t see anything close during the week.

GT has IMHO two choices – accept moderate success during the year 7 – 8 with an occasional 9 win season or – blow up the program and start over.

Many dawg fans, including this one, were pulling for Tech. Tough loss. I picked Tech to win big! Funny how some PAC 12 fans are on the Ute’s blogs claiming superiority over the SEC as proven by Utah’s win over Tech.

Happy New Year Techies………………………..

09 is a very long time ago and UGA's Rashad Jones is long gone

December 31st, 2011
8:58 pm

Tech was easily whupped by UGA back in 08 BUT our lethargy allowed Tech back in the 08 game, along with one of the worst UGA safeties in years………….Rashad Jones who missed arm tackle after arm tackle that day.

THAT LOSS was a very good UGA experience however, and that MADE SURE that every time that we strap on our gear, we are ready to play tech and that is why, Tech has only won ONE GAME vs UGA in 11 years.

Today’s humiliating Sun Bowl loss is so funny. Tech as a football team has no real identity. Triple Option? I supposes that is your team ID but what has it accomplished in 4 complete seasons? Hmmm? NO titles, no bowl wins and it DOES NOT lure top quality kids to the school. Yes, Georgia Tech assumes that they are major college ball and they thrash around and end up losing 4? of their last 5 games this season. Pretty much that same thing happened last season too. A swoon at season’s end. That triple option is a failure. Empty rushing stats is all that tech fans can be giddy about.

Tech is in deep trouble with their ancient BUT FAILED 1960s-1970s relic or scheme. D teams now are simply way too fast and the LBs are as fast as the Triple Os QBs and backs. DEs are too. The ACC is much better and it is trying to upgrade with great athletes ( better athletes) and tech simply will not be able to keep up. CPJ has been passed by.

PJ is not bobby dodd or the BEAR. hire friedgen back as off coord, go sign best passing quaterback in high school to come to gatech, and tweak your game. Triple option easy to defense with 3 big guys in the middle and decent linebackers

Old Blind Dawg…Happy New Year to you, too. Erk’s Dawgie is right about the jawing being for fun. Both UGA and GT are fine schools with different missions. I would much prefer a UGA grad veternarian treating my dogs or a UGA grad pharmacist filling my prescriptions. I would hope a UGA fan would feel confident in a GT grad designing their machinery, bridges, or building systems. Georgians have much to be proud of. I always say I want UGA to be undefeated until the last regular season game. I would like to see Clean, Old Fashioned Hate have more national relevance than the Iron Bowl. Just my New Year’s Eve thoughts. Auld Lang Syne.

Look guys you can slam on CPJ all you like, the reason you do has nothing to do with football and has more to do with his confidence. The game was lost on two issues and both are yearly problems at Tech. No kicking game and no defense.

With either today Tech wins. The offense was not stopped until CPJ decided to get conservative in running the clock. Although I don’t like it he cannot rely on the defense.

The defense-like the announcers said why are you in a man coverage with 1over the top (in the middle of the field by the way, like he can get to either side to help out) 4th and 14 requires zone 4 deep coverage. That one play call was on Groh and therefore the loss is on Groh. He needs to realize Tech is not a pro defense and treat the game as what it is, a college game- where maybe 3 out of 11 are good enough to put the game on.

Tech exceeded expectatioms this year. Next year if they don’t play defense with the players they have, then and only then will CPJ be on the hot seat.

I will give Groh one more year then if no improvement he has to go.

That will be what gets CPJ fired not his ego or his offense.
