Georgia Tech-Utah game thread
Greetings-
Just about an hour from kickoff (now 2:21 p.m. EST). I’m getting pretty intrigued to see how this game unfolds. Not having seen Utah, it’s kind of hard to get a grasp, but I think a lot of it comes down to two things. First, can Georgia Tech move the ball on Utah’s run defense, especially without Omoregie Uzzi not starting (as has been announced). Shaquille Mason will start; it’s undetermined if Uzzi will get snaps. B-back David Sims will play some, but how much is also not clear. Expect Preston Lyons to get plenty of snaps in his final game.
Second, can Tech stop John White? I imagine Utah will be more than content to pound the Jackets with Smith it’s the Utes are able. Worth watching – the sledgehammer blocking of fullback Shawn Asiata.
Other items of interest:
1. Wind is blowing pretty briskly towards the open end zone. I’m not sure of direction; if you’re watching on television, it’ll be the end zone on the right.
2. Steven Sylvester’s parents Roderick and Barbara are at the game with their other son Roderick Jr., completing a pretty remarkable feat. They have attended every one of their son’s Tech games in his career, home, away and bowl. They drove to this one with the families of Tevin Washington and Jamal Golden. Mr. Sylvester reports it took about 22 hours from the family’s home in McDonough, a pretty quick clip.
“I told Tevin’s dad he missed his calling,” Roderick Sylvester said. “He should have been a truck driver or something.”
The Sylvesters’ motivation to attend every game came from Roderick’s military service, from which he retired in 2006, which kept him from attending many of Steven’s games.
“You can’t make up for lost time, but I promised Steven as long as I’m healthy, you can look up (in the stands) and know we will be there,” he said.
3. Utah will be short two starters, left guard Miles Mason and and defensive tackle Dave Kruger. The Utes rotate a lot of defensive linemen, so that shouldn’t be as big a factor, but Mason’s injury may.
That’s about all I’ve got for now. I can’t say I’ve been to a wide variety of stadiums, but this is one of the more memorable settings. It’s set in the Franklin Mountains, which overlook the stadium beyond one end zone, and the visiting stands are carved into the side of a rocky hill.

The game was a heartbreaker. I hate the loss, but I would rather lose and be a Tech fan than to win and be a UGA fan. GO JACKETS! We got to get ready for next year!

I’m very disheartened. Congrats to the GT team that did at least show up to play. For Coach Johnson – you went very conservative (again!), your defensive coach is not cutting it and once again SPECIAL TEAMS COSTS US THE GAME.
I don’t think we can do better than Johnson, but dang he is pig-headed and doesn’t seem to care about defense or special teams. And dude, stop blaming the players. You have to take some responsibility and never do.
Another season, another end of the year tailspin…….
It’s hard being a Tech fan, but I still am!

I don’t blame the “D”..they scored one TD..I blame PJ’s offense for not getting it done in 4th..set on there azz when all they had to do was get 1st down…two different times. thats what sucks.

Techies, I know you are a little down so I won’t start kicking, but I do have some comments. Since CPJ has been at Tech, UGA fans have given him a hard time about his offense, I don’t think many of you will disagree with that right now. As for CPJ, his attitude reminds me of Jim Donnan, he is way too arrogant for the results he has furnished, so much to the point I don’t think he trust his assistant coaches to get the job done, just like Donnan. And the Groh hire, that was a stunner, I am nearly 60 years old and I can’t remember when he ever did anything worth getting hired as a DC at GT. But as teams see more and more of CPJ’s offense, it will become less and less effective, today was his best bowl game performance, but when it got to crunch time, it was stopped. He will always struggle in bowl games because of the time teams have to prepare for it, and there is a reason it is now a rariety in college football, paraity and defenses have gotten too fast for it to be effective like it was 30 years ago.

7 bowl game losses in a row. CPJ has yet to win one.Genius is as Genius does. Has the ACC won a bowl game this year? All bad news…. the worse news is UGA is gonna be a lot better next year and the bugs have to come to Athens…..

It’s New Years Eve. Just a few short hours before we ring in a new year, hopefully a good year for everyone. And yet so many UGA fans are on this blog “kickin-a-man-when-he-is-down”.

I almost feel bad for Tech and their fans ,,but you trollers of the UGA blogs gave the Dawgs so much crap over the revised SEC schedule next year that I just can’t . UGA season ticket holders aren’t happy with the out of conference schedule either. We don’t like paying top dollar for games with 3 cupcakes and Ga. Southern.

Gr8 2B i threw out GOOSE early in the season when people were suggesting we needed a new coach even then. I like Goose but don’t thing he is ready for a head coaching job just yet. Tech had the better team, but Utah had the better head coach or offensive coordinator, whoever called the shotguns for them. You notice they used a shotgun on two plays to score in overtime. Tech signed off on shotguns with about the entire second half left. CPJ and anybody over him who allows him to stay at Tech are the culprits that bring depression to Tech students and alums. Perhaps Ratikovich provides Favors to LSU by keeping CPJ. Bud Peterson, the Tech prez, is also a player along with Ratikovich in keeping CPJ. Only somebody who didn’t want Tech to win would use los formations where the qb takes the snap right under the center at the los and gets immediately tackled, as opposed to shotgun snaps that keep the qb away from tacklers. Is there an AA, an Athletic Association, at Tech at all now or not?

That was really, really bad. Agree with the others in that CPJ went ultra conservative in the 4th and CAG was at a total loss with the game on the line. Glad the season is over – can’t take much more of Tevin. Probably a great kid but he is not a QB in this division. Need some serious changes next year but don’t have much hope in things getting better.
Anyone hear how Burnett is doing?

To the geniuses who think GT lost b/c Utah had so much time to prepare for GT’s offense … stop talking, and start selling what ever it is you’re smoking.
Utah had the #7 rushing D in the NCAA, and GT still got 323 yds rushing. GT had NO 100yd rushing game out of a B-back this year…unitl today, when the #7 RUSHING D in the NCAA had 30+ days to prepare to stop the run. And the 100yd rusher was a BACK-UP!
This game was lost b/c of:
- NO reliable FG kicker
- poor play calling by PJ & execution by TW on the 2 drives before the missed FG at the end of regulation
