EL PASO, Texas – Georgia Tech offensive tackle Phil Smith was suspended for the Sun Bowl Wednesday for violating team rules. Smith will not play and was sent home.
Coach Paul Johnson did not have more comment on the matter. This is the second suspension of the season for Smith. He was held out of the first two games of the season, also for breaking team rules.
Smith played in a three-tackle rotation with Tyler Kidney and Ray Beno through the season. Most likely, Kidney and Beno will start and take all of the snaps.
Smith is the second starter who will not play for rules violations. Cornerback Louis Young is also ineligible for the game for disciplinary reasons.

We have had 2 guys suspended this year. How many have you had? Oh Yeah, seems the last 2 games were arranged to let UGA have two games back to back agains the triple option.
both out of conference dummy, each school schedules those on their own.

PureEvil : I said we AVERAGED 30 points the last 4 games agianst Georgia. Not that we score 30 every game. Its not about figureing out an offense it’s about execution. It really don’t matter what offense you run, if the players don’t execute it won’t work. That includes a pro style also. Tech has ran a pro style offense before and lost with it. What it boils down to is execution and the talent to be able to execute.

Thank the good Lord for the kids that know how to represent themselves, their families and their universities. Bowl games are for the kids and these thugs (and every team has them) that can’t handle it continue to show what is wrong with college football and college basketball. Many shouldn’t even be a part of a college team.

True, when players are suspended for in-house rules, neither school chooses to release the information, although, as you said, sometimes it leaks. BUT SOME UGA players have been suspended for BREAKING THE LAW, and it’s not up to the school to determine whether that information is released or not. The fact that nothing has been reported about either Tech player who has been suspended this year says that it was all for breaking in-house rules and NOT for breaking the law.

I’m a Tech fan… I like CPJ and the option, It just pisses me off as a fan when I come on here and I see GT fans acting like GT has a better program than UGA… We will never consistantly have a better program than UGA. What you say is true if we avg 30 we should win, but you can’s score 50 one week then 10 the next and consistantly expect to win games.

True, you have no idea whether any Tech players have been suspended for pot or not, and yes, that’s breaking the law. But how many UGA players have also been caught for smoking pot and kept under the radar also? At least as many as at Tech, I am sure. So that argument holds no water. It’s all the driving with suspended licenses, DOUI’s, etc. that the mutt players have been suspended for that apparently has not happened at Tech, or it would have been reported, as it should be.

we had one this year suspended for being arrested. ONE. UGA doesnt keep it under the radar they immediately suspend them, they may not say why but they dont hide. At GT they let the first one go and then suspend after mulitple times.

I come here to talk about things going on at Tech, but we are inundated by trolls who have no desire to have any kind of intelligent conversation. For the most part, you are as guilty of that as any of the others. Don’t tell me about all the Tech fans who post on your blogs; I have no idea whether that is true or not, because there is nothing that could possibly interest me that would be on your blogs. And you call it “fun” to come on here and act like a fool. Well, to each his own, I guess, little man. You probably picked on other kids in the school yard too, didn’t you? True, once again, all you are doing is validating what I said but are too stupid to realize. If a player is arrested, of course the information is going to be made public, but not by the school—by the authorities. Apparently no Tech players have been arrested; whatever in-house rules they may have broken, I have no idea, nor do you. I don’t know that any UGA players were actually arrested last year (although I THINK there was at least one who was), but there were several with DUI’s and driving on a suspended license, whose behavior was well-documented by the news media, as well as the sports media long before the UGA administration ever said anything.

Check out UGA blogs always talking football over there when not policing the dumb comments. A few posts above is football talk. I can talk football all day and be happy as can be. But for the most part all blogs are filled with biased junk and insults. You were making it seem as if this year we had a bunch of arrests when we had only one all year this year.
Yes in years past things were too lax and players took advantage of it, but unlucky for them the police werent as lax. But things have changed and going from a front runner in the fulmer cup to being no where in contention within a year or two is a great turn around.

Their offense is elite, good running backs and tight ends, along with a solid o-line. I’ll agree that OK State is back to losing 3 or 4 games next season without Weeden and Blackmon.

hard to tell, but I dont see Charles coming back and possibly Rambo, But Murray , Jenkins and the rest should be coming back. Jenkins is a tough cal. He enjoys UGA so much and really struggled early on. I think if he stays his draft staus will jump at least a round. He needs to get more comfortable playing at his current weight, which he clearly wasnt at the beginning of the season.
I reall really hop Rambo comes back, that will be huge for us. We have some young guys that can learn from him and excel with another year of being behind him.
Orsen im the least worried about. Hes an amazing player but we have so many good TEs behind him it shouldnt cost us much especially with how good our recievers are. Hopefully Jay Rome will play bball and get in tremendous shape to take over TE next year if Orsen leaves.

And much deeper. Which young guys do you expect to step up next year? I’m guessing Damian Swann is going to be really good and I think Herrera, Theus and Drew will be stars pretty soon. Seems GT fans hate everything not GT and UGA fans hate the Triple option just b/c Tech runs it. It’s ignorant!!! I enjoy watching UGA play… I couldn’t possibly every pull for them, but I enjoy watching them. I have respect for UGA and their program, but I’d also think reasonable people would have respect for what GT is able to do considering they rarely have a high ranking recruiting class and the academic restraints and lack of degree choices.

I understand where you’re coming from. I rarely pull for Tech, except this year because I don’t like Utah at all. I don’t know why, I never have. But I’m not obsessed with hatred over them, like a lot of fans… I respect Tech more than I did with Gailey there, because you guys actually win a few big games now (VT in ‘09, Clemson this year). My opinion is when you have a school with high academics, you can’t really expect to get elite recruits. But one or two of those elite guys deciding to go to Tech could help you out a lot.

Young guys-
I would really like to see Drew get a few starts and see how he does playing a full game. But I think he is going to be a beast!
Swann will be great for us next year and will be able to step in quick. He started really slow but is suppossed to be really impressive as of late.
Herrera is nasty and will def step into some role for us.
Yea I hope TJ recovers quick we could def use him.
I am really looking forward to seeing Wesley Scott (or other way around) I have heard nothing but GREAT things about him. Hes supposed to be faster than Mitchell which is mind boggling.
Theus will be fun to watch as he should be able to be a starter by mid season. (Hopefully he brings Avery Young with him bc he could be a starter mid season as well.)
We have so much young talent its almost unfair. but I am looking forward to seeing these guys get out there next year and show their stuff!
