Tech’s Phil Smith suspended for bowl game

EL PASO, Texas – Georgia Tech offensive tackle Phil Smith was suspended for the Sun Bowl Wednesday for violating team rules. Smith will not play and was sent home.

Coach Paul Johnson did not have more comment on the matter. This is the second suspension of the season for Smith. He was held out of the first two games of the season, also for breaking team rules.

Smith played in a three-tackle rotation with Tyler Kidney and Ray Beno through the season. Most likely, Kidney and Beno will start and take all of the snaps.

Smith is the second starter who will not play for rules violations. Cornerback Louis Young is also ineligible for the game for disciplinary reasons.

I would let him go. He, obviously, does not put the team first. And this team needs that attitude to win. I hope the other players are taking the game seriously. We don’t need another bowl loss, and Utah played very good football at the end of the season. They got better as we did our usual end of the season slump.

I am sorry to see that Mr. Smith is still having trouble adhering to team rules. This suspension will be tough for the team and will be tough for him. But, in the game of life, it is important for all of us, including Mr. Smith, to realize that there are consequences to our actions. Hopefully, this “time out” will leave a lasting impression and make him a better man and a better teammate as a result.

Robert Hall, the kid last week or was it two weeks back? Now, this GT kid being suspended. Trouble always swirls around The Flats. Drugs, home invasion on Ethel St. rapes, muggings, PROBATION for the SECOND TIME in what? 7 or 8 years?

CPJ is ON THE 2012 COACHES HOT SEAT. No ACC titles, no bowl wins in a decade? Almost a decade? Lousy recruiting and the triple option basically exposed for what it is ……………a boring middle school offense and with UGA being one of the “cummiest programs and coached by the crummiest football coach and staff” and STILL LOSING THREE IN A ROW …………………proves that GT is only small ball.

Sun Bowl payout? What? $3 mill?

Outback Bowl PAYOUT?? What? $7 Mill. This says it all.

DUCK !!! El Paso is very very dangerous and so, do not dine out, do not walk around and wear KEVLAR pajamas to be safe ……….. Kevlar gloves and socks and such. The Obama caused illegal gunfire from over the border is very prolific. DUCK !!!

Utah will humiliate GT but “no one even knows that bowl is being played” says Fox Sports News, when just last week they ranked the Sun Bowl # 27 out of 35 bowls and they ranked the OUTBACK # 5 of the top 5.

We’re here ‘coz its fun! We realize that no matter how bad we are, how easy our schedule is, etc. that we STILL are better than ya’ll! We’ve whipped ya’ll 9 out of 10, so blogs are about the only way to keep the rivalry going…..it sure ain’t happening on the field! old dog, I’ll have to take your word for it about Tech fans being on your blogs; I never even bother to read them myself, because anything to do with UGA is totally meaningless and insignificant in my life. Obviously, you cannot say the same about your life, and to use the excuse that some Tech fans post on your blogs to justify your posting on ours shows that Tech is not meaningless or insignificant to you, and it also shows the level of maturity you have. Two wrongs do not make a right, and you, little puppy dog, are nothing but a silly little child.

crackbaby, don’t you think it interesting that Tech suspends a player, and about the only place you read about it is on sports blogs. UGA suspends a player and it’s often front-page news because of the severity of the infraction. Suspended UGA players go to court, although quite a few of them never bother to show up. The fact that nothing has been written about why Phil Smith was suspended means it was just a team rule that was broken, not the law.

Supersize,
Well congrats! You are right! Of course I’m trying to show that Tech is significant by keeping up the rivalry….ya’ll just have to do your part. It starts by playing big-boy football! The cripple-option ain’t gonna do it, either. Bring in some defensive players and a QB (yeah, I know I keep saying this) and THEN maybe the rivalry will return. Meanwhile you are left with your pseudo-intellectual ramblings (no pun intended) to justify your existence.

old dog, in case you haven’t checked, with the exception of Gailey’s first year, all the games have been relatively close, so the competition is definitely there. Is good competition enough for me? Hell, no; I want to win. But don’t sit there on your high horse saying that there is no rivalry, when you know there is. You still haven’t stopped the triple option; we just needed to be able to pass this year to open it up more, and Washington pretty much sucked. And yes, we do need some better defensive players; hopefully the marginal improvement between 2010 and 2011 is indicative that we are headed in that direction.

Are some of you people really this stupid?? UGA along with every team doesn’t control who they play in conference… UGA didn’t drop Bama, the conference had to make a new schedule b/c of Mizzou and A&M and Bama didn’t get put on the new schedule. The only teams UGA has control over was Buffalo, Fl Atlantic, GA Southern and GT.

Old Dog: How can you say the triple option does’nt work. Tech has averaged 30 points a game against UGA the past 4 years. It’s not the offense thats failed it’s the defense. A team that scores 30 points should win the game. If Tech had a defense that could get UGA off the field, they would demolish UGA every year with the Triple Option. Talk about pseudo-intellectual rambling, but don’t get confused by the facts.

We get beat almost every year by UGA. That’s a FACT… Stop making GT fans look stupid by trying to compare us to UGA. We recruit in the 30’s and 40’s UGA recruits in the top 10. They consistently have better talent than us. Sure we can beat them, but stop acting like we do because WE DON’T!!!

PureEvil : I don’t think I made Tech fans look stupid. I think you did that all by yourself. I just made the point that the Triple Option was not the problem, as stated by Old Dog, It was our defense that needs the most improvment. If you have a team that scores 30 points a game and you lose, you need to look at the defense.

Clemson was a good win, but other than that,
you scored 30 or over only on the following horrible programs.

Kansas
NC State
Duke

This does not prove out the triple joke.

How ’bout them bees,
17 this year…..folks figured it out. (Not 30.) Keep playing w/o a QB……we’ll keep winning. Get a QB and incorporate a little passing, and you will do better. However, a real QB ain’t gonna sacrifice his body in the cripple-option, so you may have to settle for the athlete at that position. Keep running it, though, and keep losing to UGA. One fluke and you are on a bandwagon…..

So much seems to be made up about the number of fans at the games from the Georgia perspective. Big deal….I never saw a fan make a tackle. Georgia’s schedule this year was laughable for a big bad SEC team. Georgia will never win another National Championship let alone a SEC Championship as long as LSU and Alabama are in the SEC.

So what you are saying is Bama and LSU will win every SEC title from here until forever? Are you saying that they will NEVER EVER have down years… A few years ago people were saying the same thing about USC, Florida and Texas… Georgia’s schedule is laughable, but as a GT fan I have no room to make fun of them look who we play next year..
