Tech’s Phil Smith suspended for bowl game

EL PASO, Texas – Georgia Tech offensive tackle Phil Smith was suspended for the Sun Bowl Wednesday for violating team rules. Smith will not play and was sent home.

Coach Paul Johnson did not have more comment on the matter. This is the second suspension of the season for Smith. He was held out of the first two games of the season, also for breaking team rules.

Smith played in a three-tackle rotation with Tyler Kidney and Ray Beno through the season. Most likely, Kidney and Beno will start and take all of the snaps.

Smith is the second starter who will not play for rules violations. Cornerback Louis Young is also ineligible for the game for disciplinary reasons.

SuperDawg – The reason DAWG thugs are on this blog is because they just won the cup cake award for a their schedule next year and are licking their ba**s over here. They just got the East handed to them on a platter and can already make plans for the Ga Dome next December. What a joke when the AD says they aren’t dodging Alabama and instead are “honoring” their commitment to AU. The only ones buying that crap are the DAWG fans who either know they got away with a weak-sister schedule and are willing to “Back In” to the play off – or the ones who are are too dumb to know the difference.

Phil Smith worked for us a couple years ago to gain experience in the engineering field. Phil is a great kid. He just has made some mistakes. Lord knows I made them when I was his age. I would fare to say that everyone else on this site made mistakes as well, some even worse. Yes, I have been a Dawg all my life. Phil is a great kid to be around. To blast a kid like Phil is so wrong! Do you know him? I doubt it! Give the kid a break. Any or you who has not made a mistake, please throw a rock!

I wish that we could just say no to going to these meaningless bowls when the players obviously don’t care. 2 guys have been suspended and they haven’t played hard in a bowl game in years. They only people buying tickets are giving them away so why play in game if you are going to lose money and the players would rather stay at home on their own mattresses.

Agree with BiffP above. UNC seemed to play like Tech last year in that lovely gambling city in west Lousyanty this year. Not too much incentive for some of these bowls. How much fun can Ft Bliss be if you are not into 155mm?

I never go to other teams sites usually, but when I saw the article in the AJC , I had to vent he is a good kid! I hope he has learned and flies right.

Maybe if paul(ima)johnson didn’t coach the thugs to cheap shot other players they would be able to curb their behavior off the field. Instead the classless and clueless cpj encourages players and students to be cowardly thugs and the list of bugs that are in trouble continues to grow every day.

Paddy you do not know what you write about concerning alcohol and Utah. Salt Lake City is actually a very fun party town. There are some of the finest micro-breweries anywhere in Salt Lake City and there are very attractive ladies in SLC. A whole lot more attractive ladies on the campus of Utah than on the campus of Tech!

El Paso, home of the 1st Armored Division! Truelly Clueless Dawg Fan(s). You all are a disgrace to this fine nation. The Georgia Institute of Technology has purchased (as well as Utah) tickets for these brave heroes. I guess it was a waste of time considering the dawg nation’s faithful opinion. “To Hell with America and the United States” just so we can degrade and denigrate Tech. You citizens (and I use that term loosely) deserve the scorn of every true AMERICAN in this country! I only hope you can move to a better country (if it exist) and root to your heart’s content for your heavenly bulldogs (except when you need need medical help). Other than that, here’s hoping Michigan State destroys you and all of your anti-Americanism. May your New Years be miserable and you move to China or North Korea! THWG! Has any Uga student ever taken English or History (such as it is taught) or anything of value to the world we live in? True Dawg Fan has admitted to being a crook and having no scruples (plus his pride in ignorance). Is his education from Uga what you guys and gals take pride in? I’d be more worried but I don’t take any advice from a dog. But still aren’t you concerned with a complete lack of morals and ethics? Sorry again, “morals and ethics” never enter the question regarding Uga. No Church should ever enter the equation. Sorry, about the term “equation”. Use Wiki to research it…very reliable. Use it for a term paper!

“tek does not help our power ranking. If you are going to reach the next level you need to play the best”

Here is UGA’s 2012 with the Sagarin power ratings from Schultz’ blog toda.

Sept. 1: Buffalo, 135.
Sept. 8: at Missouri, 16.
Sept. 15: Florida Atlantic, 190.
Sept. 22: Vanderbilt, 36.
Sept. 29: Tennessee, 53.
Oct. 6: at South Carolina, 15.
Oct. 13: Bye.
Oct. 20: at Kentucky, 87.
Oct. 27: Florida (Jacksonville), 35.
Nov. 3: Mississippi, 112.
Nov. 10: Auburn, 45.
Nov. 17: Georgia Southern, 84.
Nov. 24: Georgia Tech, 50.

When there are 4 worse teams on your schedule than an FCS team (Georgia State) you aren’t trying to play the best.

I highly doubt Smith will be back next season. He has now been suspended for the same infraction twice, and the issue in question is one Paul Johnson takes very seriously. Everyone makes mistakes, and deserves a second chance, but betray that trust, ESPECIALLY at the Bowl game? That’s unconscionable. Phil is scheduled to graduate this Spring, so at least he can say he left campus with a GA Tech degree in hand. That will serve him well the rest of his life.

I just kept yelling at this kid and he didn’t listen. He is the reason my prolific awesome spread option DERP attack did not result in a perfect season.

Now that he is gone, please proceed in telling everyone what a big chance we have for a NC next season.

When we win it, don’t worry. I will ignore the cheating by my players and be a jerk to the NCAA so it will be taken away too.

Thanks, that is all. I’m going to that shop in Lenox for a manooby brassiere makeover; gift certificate from Christmas, thanks Santa!!

@11:17 What
Questioning a Georgia student or Alum’s English literacy? Yet you have two sentences which you end with a preposition? Had you taken, and passed, a basic English class perhaps you would have learned a sentence cannot end with a preposition, thus it is apparent you did not.

As to questioning “morals and ethics”, a GT supporter questioning the morals and ethics of any school is absolutely a JOKE! GT is currently on probation because Fish Fry Johnson “chose” to play players against Georgia who were under NCAA investigation for accepting improper benefits. As a result GT was stripped of an ACC Title. There’s also the case of Chan Gailey playing Reuben Houston while Houston was under indictment by the Federal Govt for his part in a Drug Ring. Contrast that with Mark Rict and Georgia’s suspension of AJ Green while Green was being investigated for improper benefits. Tell me again, which school has clearly demonstrated morals and
ethics and which school has put “winning above ethics and morals”?

You GT supporters are so nutty you are silly. You know the Georgia Athletic Dept had no input into the SEC schedule, however that shouldn’t stop your accusations. Ease your mind with this fact, were Georgia playing your schedule, that ACC back breaker, the last five years Georgia would have at least 3 undefeated seasons and ACC titles. The SEC is clearly superior to the extent a mediocre SEC team can dominate the ACC’s best. I would suggest you GT supporters may want to be more concerned that the ACC is closer in strength to the MAC than the SEC, that is a fact. My final suggestion, as a New Year’s resolution, will some of you Dawg haters man up and buy season tickets then perhaps GT’s home attendance might exceed that of Milton High School in 2013.
