Washington seeks strong finish for Georgia Tech

Greetings-

Hope you all have had a restful holiday and aren’t suffering too much Georgia Tech football withdrawal. I’ve arrived in El Paso and am proud to report I’ve done my share to infuse the local economy with out-of-town cash with to my purchase of an Oral-B toothbrush at Target last night.

Players and coaches also arrived yesterday, presumably with their dental hygiene instruments.

I don’t have a ton today, but I did speak with quarterback Tevin Washington and quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon for a story I plan to write for Wednesday’s paper. I think the most intriguing thing that I learned was that a considerable part of Washington’s passing struggles was due to a habit of looking too much at the pass rush and not enough downfield. Perhaps not surprisingly, he was at times a little impatient in the pocket.

“It’s having a feel for the pocket, being able to see downfield and feeling the pocket and knowing when to cut it loose, when to run,” Bohannon said. “You work on it in practice, but truthfully, you’ve just got to get out there and do it and get a feel for it.”

Washington recognized he has some room to grow in that department. It’s not easy, and it’s one of those things that typically worsens as pass protection breaks down. The more hits a quarterback takes in the pocket, the more antsy and concerned about self-preservation he’s likely to become.

The challenge, Washington said, is “making sure you keep your eyes downfield so you can give yourself a chance to make plays.”

Going into the Sun Bowl, Washington is 63 for 135 (46.7 percent) for 1,515 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He had an unbelievably hot start passing. He was 27 for 42 for 821 yards (64.3 percent, 19.5 yards per attempt) with eight touchdowns and one interception. The rest of the way, the numbers were 36 for 93 for 694 yards (38.7 percent, 7.5 yards per attempt) with two touchdowns and seven interceptions. He had no touchdown passes in the last seven regular-season games, although he ran for 10 in those games.

I think more goes into the numbers than Washington’s play, good and bad – the pass protection, the routes receivers ran, the catchable balls they did or didn’t catch, the score or third-down situations forcing Tech’s hand, etc. – although his focusing on the pass rush is obviously no small element.

And it’s notable that Bohannon, who is typically unsparing and honest in his evaluations of players, said that Washington has “done a tremendous job to get us to this point” and praised his leadership. It bears a reminder that the same guy who didn’t have it against Georgia is also the same guy who ran for 176 yards (a school record for a quarterback) and led the offense to 383 rushing yards against Clemson and who has helped Tech convert 54.9 percent of its third downs, the highest rate in the country.

Said Bohannon, “Sure, you can always look back and always go, ‘Well, if we’d have made this play in this game’ or ‘If he’d have made this throw in this game,’ but it’s part of the position, I think. I’m proud of what he’s done for us this year and I’m proud of where he’s at.”

Speaking with him Monday, Washington seemed very ready and eager to play; I think it’s important to him to finish well and help Tech break the bowl losing streak. He’s a highly team-oriented player with some of the best work habits on the team. To borrow a phrase Al Groh likes to use, the game means a lot to him.

“I don’t really think I had a best game,” he said. “I’ve still got a chance to go out and have my best game Saturday. I’m looking forward to trying to do that.”

Ken,
How many snaps did Synjyn take during Bowl prep?
I like the attitude of Tevin and he will do well in life after football. If he plays the whole game, we might as well turn the channel.

TRUE, you want to know the difference between you and me? The difference is that I hate UGA, but I don’t obsess over it, and I don’t care enough about your school or your team in any sport to waste my time posting on your blogs. You obviously hate Tech, but you have proven to everyone today that you are totally obsessed with that hatred. Like I said earlier, you need professional help. That is NOT a normal attribute to have

Hahaha and you still dont get it. Its almost 3PM and im at work. I have successfully sped up my day to almost its end already on a day when the entire office is bored and with nothing to do. This is just a time waster for me. Its fun to see you ner ds squirm around trying to insult me and think that i actually care about anything you say!

You are mistaken. UGA loves Paul Johnson.
Please keep him forever.
When we make fun of your offense, we are doing you a favor; trying to bring it to your attention.
He hasn’t accomplished anything at Tech, and never will, so disregard our comments and keep doing what you’re doing.
It works great for us.

TRUE, remember YOU are the one who showed up on these blogs 3 or 4 hours ago hurling insults from the very beginning. Dawg48 tried to talk football, and a couple of us responded to him, but did you? NO!!!! Even when give the opportunity to talk football, you always bring it back to insults. The rest of us have two choices when it comes to you—-totally ignore you, which I wish I had done, or “fight back.” Talk football for once in your pathetic excuse for a life, and I will respond in kind.

hahahaha I came on here and corrected those calling tevin a QB and let them know at tech yall only have RBs, with the “QB” being the Head RB.

Why is it that when Paul Johnson was at Ga. Southern and Navy all I heard about him from UGA fans was what a great coach he was. Now that he’s at Ga. Tech all they wany to do is call himm names and make fun of his offense. Can’t have it both ways haters.

He was running that offense at keyword “NAVY”, then he brought that laughable offense to Tech and tried to compete with it. And it worked for what 1-2 years? and now almost everyone has a defense for it now.

TRUE, you just showed you total ignorance of football and, in particular, Johnson’s offense. NOBODY has a defense for his offense. When the QB does not run it smoothly, which was the case in 3 games this year (NOT a case of the other team’s defense), then it produces; when he does not run it smoothly, it doesn’t produce. What has been lacking, and continues to be lacking, with Johnson’s teams is a consistent defense. When Tech and UGA played this year, the better team won, but it was sure as hell not due to Grantham’s overrated defense. It was due to TW having a terrible day and Tech’s secondary sucking.

I think you just showed how little you know actually. There are many a def scheme for the triple option. I love the 3-4 against that crap offense. Big beef eater at NG to plug the dive and then fast LBS and secondary to cover the pitch and or pass. Its not that hard to defend really. especially when our line is so much bigger than yours. and when you dont have a QB but instead a head RB.

And I would add that the coaches that have been defending against the triple option throughout there careers would laugh at you saying “there is no def for the triple option”

Overrated def?? same defense that held LSU to 0 first downs and under 20 yards in a half and only allowed 30 pass yards all game? thats an overrated def??? wow that logic again.

Pressure on the QB is the best way to beat someone. He got more pressure once we got into the meat of our schedule and started playing teams with big men on their lines. So until we can recruit the size SEC schools are able to get, we will continue to be mediocre. Sorry, but that is just the way it is. Everyone saw the articles about the toughest players we played against, and they were not tiny.

I expect we will have a very tough time against the Utes who will out man us on both sides of the ball in the trenches.

It happened the last 6 bowl games and I have not seen anything to make me believe different.

However, I’m rooting for the Jackets, and as usual will be happy if they are successful and depressed if they are not.

They were 11-1 last year and were Co champions of the big ten that year of course they came out in full support. They squandered the big 10 championship this year, and most likely left a sour taste in their fans mouths.

Last year were they came into this game on fire and had a great shot at winning and beating bama (which obviously didnt happen).

Go ahead and look at the second half, we had more yards overall than they did and they have the number 2 def in the country. We held them to 30 passing yards and they had just over 200 rushing yards. And thats total yards for the whole game. And almost all of it was done on short fields. They might have had 1-2 long drives in the entire game. So in reality it was the lack of offense in the second half that caused the Def to be out there so long and often.

As for that joke of an offense. Yes it worked great for the first year or 2 but everyone that has to play tech has developed schemes for it. Its not that hard to defend especially when you have no QB like tech. I have already told you how we defended it and did it quite well. How many completions did yall have? and that doesnt count the ones thrown right to our defenders either!

Some coaches dread it sure, bc they dont have the personnel to. But the teams you play now all do have those players, minus the cupcake games.

No, the Capital One bowl picks before the Outback Bowl and they picked Nebraska over Mich St. Just like how they picked South Carolina over UGA. You can talk about imaginary tiers all you want but those are the facts. Plus, good luck with the whole proving them wrong theory. Hey True Dawg Fan (really a GT fan:) Only 2 teams from each conference can go to BCS bowls. So Arkansas and Georgia were not picked for those bowls. That enabled Clemson (lost to GT, got killed by NC State and South Carolina, and squeaked by WFU) in their last month– to go to the Orange Bowl. It also allowed VT (got killed by 4 TD’s vs. Clemson) to go to the Sugar Bowl.

If not for that rule, Arkansas or Georgia (rememver the 10 wins in a row?) would have gone to the Sugar Bowl, the other to the Orange Bowl. Also, Boise State and Michigan State got screwed as well. Probably should have been Arkansas vs. Boise in the Sugar– and Georgia vs. Michigan State in the Orange. The BCS rewards mediocrity.

UGA doesn’t FEAR the CPJ Triple Option. UGa just made Ga. Southern the opponent the week before the TECH game just because. RIGHT?

We are just picking them back up again actually. And its actually mcgarity that prefers to have a cupcake scheduled late in the season to basically have another bye week to prepare and get players healthy. I would call that…… SMART!

But once again call it something that works for your arguement.
