Reports: Chow to leave Utah for Hawaii

Utah offensive coordinator Norm Chow was negotiating a contract Tuesday to become the next coach at Hawaii, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and the Salt Lake Tribune. Utah will play Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl.

Chow will coach at Utah, his alma mater, for only one season after being hired in January. The Hawaii-born Chow will get his first chance to be a head coach after 39 years as an assistant at the college and NFL levels. He is credited with the development of three Heisman Trophy winners – Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart – and also coached Steve Young, Jim McMahon and Philip Rivers. Tuesday, both Chow and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said their preference is that he coach the Utes against Tech.

Chow told the Deseret News that he “would be honored to stay” if Whittingham wants him to coach in the Sun Bowl. Utah defensive coordinator Siane Sitake is reportedly a possibility to join Chow in Hawaii. Whittingham said he would likewise hope that Sitake would coach in the bowl game.

As a recruiting dead period began Monday and runs through Jan. 3, Chow would not be able to get on the road to recruit if he were to leave Utah immediately.

Tech wide receivers coach Buzz Preston, a Hawaii grad and former assistant, applied for the position but was not a finalist.

Looking back at the teams he’s coached at as Offensive Coordinator, the only ones that actually showed any real scoring ‘threat’ were those from his days at USC with the high ranked recruits. At no other time have his offenses been considered prolific.

That being said, I wish him well. Now there’s a defensive coordinator at VA Tech (Bud Foster) whose paid his dues and also deserves a shot as well…

Jacket Man………I think Bud Foster has had his chances to be a HC and for multiple reasons it did not happen. I would take a chance on Foster.

Chow’s decision to go back to Hawaii is understandable. Getting things set up before retirement. Nobody beating down the doors to be HC at Hawaii. School always in financial trouble and the worst facilities in Div 1 football. But the weather is nice!

@Jacket Man – So, your saying that when he coached at BYU the offense wasn’t prolific. Yeah, he only coached a Heisman winner named Ty Detmer and that was about the time they won a national title. Oh wait! Just forgot that a NFL Hall of Fame QB played for him too. You are so completely wrong about what this guy can do with an offense.

@Tech76 – Thank you for chiming in there – completely agree with your opinion and response.

Jacket Man will likely argue that Chow wasn’t officially the offensive coordinator for LaVell Edwards then, but he did call the plays and coach the QBs. The comment about Bud Foster is irrelevant for the UH position. They don’t want him and he wouldn’t want to be there.

IMO, Foster is loyal to Beamer and likes his job there. Could be a Mickey Andrews (former FSU DC) situation, great DC but not HC material.

Hope Chow gets it going at Hawaii, but not in his last game with the Utes…

I’m worried about GA Tech and how they’ll preform against Utah. Utah has a really good rush defense which, you can say what you want to say about execution, causes problems for Tech. UGA, Miami, Virginia, and Virginia Tech all had a really good rush defense. PLUS!!! THEY GET EXTRA TIME TO PREPARE FOR US.

On defense, they run the Pro style and so did VA TECH, UVA, MIAMI, and UGA!!
In the article above it talks about how that like to run the ball a lot. Talk about uh-oh…

Unfortunately, I sense another loss for the Yellow Jackets against the Utes. If Tech would be playing against a team that runs the spread like Clemson did then I would think that the Yellow Jackets would pull of the victory.

This will have little impact on the Sun Bowl other than MAYBE being an extra motivational tool for Utah’s players (ie. “Send the coach off with a big win.”) It really shouldn’t concern Tech other than for our players to just understand that Utah will come out fighting hard. But they were going to do that anyway. Utah’s been a dangerous little bowl opponent for anyone with a brand. Utah doesn’t have the history or national brand of most BCS-conference schools even though it’s one of them now, so my guess is they’ll still be a “chip on the shoulder” team for a long time. They’ve bitten Tech before, and that should be all the motivation our players need. Coach can go ahead and just remind the players that Utah fans would love to gloat one more time and make them look bad on national TV. I think if Tech comes out well-rested, well-prepared and with guns blazing they make this game look less like Duke and more like Kansas. Perfect opportunity to get the bowl monkey off our backs and get the warm feelings toward next season flowing on The Flats.

Even those reporting success had difficulty reproducing Pons’ & Fleischmann’s results. On April 10, 1989 researchers at Texas A&M University published detection of excess heat & later that day a group at the Georgia Institute of Technology announced neutron production-the strongest replication announced up to that point due to the detection of neutrons & the repudiation of the lab. GIT announced on April 13 a retraction saying their neutron detectors gave positives when exposed to heat. Yes, GT did at first agree with the initial announcement from Utah. If you go back and check Chow’s resume as Offensive Coordinator; when he actually was responsible for running the show; you’ll see what I’m talking about. He wasn’t in that capacity at BYU…

I’d say Chow did pretty well as OC at USC from 2001-2004. 2 MNCs and 2 Heisman trophy winners.
He did well as OC at NCSU – over 30 pts a game scored

superDumb, it actually only took Tech 13 years to beat the mutts in Athens, since we played in the OMNI in Atlanta for 14 straight years, and Tech won the majority of those games. Do you realize that Tech won an SEC championship in basketball before leaving the SEC in 1964, but UGA didn’t win an SEC championship in basketball until Durham did back in the 80s. That’s pretty pathetic, little man

Also, if you were loved by beautiful women and cherished by friends and family, you wouldn’t be constantly writing irrational nonsense about cold fusion, narrow mindedness, hate filled comments, or your obsession with Georgia Tech, on a GT football blog.

Interesting concept, huh?

Speaking of "prepping" kids for ............

December 24th, 2011
8:55 am

The proper prep for the Sun Bowl trip is to have several Kevlar articles of clothing handy, like Kevlar Bermuda shorts and T shirts IF it is warm on game day or Kevlar jeans and Kevlar sweat shirts and Kevlar boots, gloves and Kevlar sunglasses if chilly.

Kevlar cloting? Yeah, because Tech will need to be wearing Kevlar with all of the stray bulllets fired from over the ole TEX/MEX border from guns deposited there by Obama and Eric Holder. DUCK !!! Zing, zing ……………….can you imagine the ricochets, as you dine al fresco? Zing !! Duck !!

Yes, Kevlar will be the clothing of choice in El Paso.

When you check into the hotel, the front desk person will assigning you a Kevlar room pass card. Zing !! Duck !!

Whatever you do ……………. do not go out after dark in El Paso.

Fox Sports News last week ranked the Sun Bowl # 27 out of 35 bowl games and the OUTBACK BOWL was RANKED # 5. Typical UGA venue. Over the last 11 years, UGA has attended 3 Sugar Bowl games, two Capital One Bowl games and now this Outback Bowl. Decent average of HIGH END bowls. Tech? ONE URANGE BOWL in 44 years.

Duck !!! AK 47s being fired from acorss the border will be bad news. Kevlar IS THE ANSWER. Enjoy !!!

9:03 am

Hey Gatorman ……………..UGA has won maybe 4 over the last 11 years and about 3 over the last 6 or 7 years and OWNS FLORIDA ALL TIME. The tide has turned.

It is so convenient for Florida fans to reel off the W s for the last 22 years but that is too easy. I go back more than 22 babay years and so with MY COUNT ……………………UGA OWNS FLORIDA, ALWAYS HAS ……………….ALWAYS WILL.

Here are the hard facts ………………. The FAT MAN Weis DUMPED Florida and Muschamp with his sidelines tantrums will not win big at Florida. Over the next 3 or 4 years, UGA will own Florida. They will fire Muschamp and another guy will need two or three years to turn it around and by then, UGA will have won at least 4 or 5 in a row. HISTORY SUPPORTS me on this. UGA OWNS FLORIDA like we OWN GEORGIA TECH.

It is over Florida. UGA ALWAYS HAS OWNED YOU like a rented mule.

On an important note

December 24th, 2011
9:14 am

CPJ is on THE TECH HOT SEAT. The gents from GT classes of late 60s and early 70s
(TECH FUND CROWD) are not happy. Most are heard grumbling on the links around Atlanta in their foursomes made up of combined UGA, AU and GT ole boy golfers. I know, as I ARE ONE> UGA man here.

CPJ must win this low, low level bowl and he must sign a well respected recruiting class and he must win a title. No bowl wins, no ACC titles and the SECOND CHEATING SCANDAL at Tech in around 8 years has the TECH FUND crowd ………..very unhappy.

CPJ? He so deperately wanted that Texas A&M job where the triple option was world class back in the day and so well understood and appreciated by the Aggie faithful but his phone did not ring.

No, CPJ IS on the hot seat for 2012.

Now altely, with FLorida, UGA has won 3 in the last 8 years and that is not bad at all, givent Florida’s teams over that span. No, we do not JUST COUNT 22 year, heck now. We count ALL TIME …………..ALL TIME UGA OWNS FLORIDA AND GEORGIA TECH.

Florida, we look forward to more of the same over you next year too. It is coming. It is coming and Florida fans my age know that it is changing and UGA wil go back to whuppin Florida like a rented Arcadia, Florida mule.
